Conrad's jumping to conspiracies again. The Rock's mic work sounded more brutal on Billy gun because Billy didn't have the mic skills to compete with The Rock. It wasn't Rock taking liberties, it was Rock doing his usual trash talk but with no comebacks from the other side. Billy didn't have to respond to anyone up until this point. Rock did this to everyone but the only difference were the people he worked with. Rock made fun of Big Show and Undertaker but of course, it's Big Show and Undertaker - guys twice his size that didn't need to talk back. Rock called Kane "The Big Red Retard" but that's another guy twice his size. Y2J could talk back and Rock brutalized him as well. Triple H had heel heat. All Triple H needed to do was to open his mouth and have Steph with him and Rock destroyed him and Steph every night as well.
I agree, they pushed billy but he didn’t have the mic skills to be a top guy, even one time dx had cue cards cause he couldn’t remember the road dog catch phrase, and after the rock said it doesn’t matter what your name is I think everybody said yeah who cares about billy gun
Jericho actually wasn't use to people talking back to him in wcw. N truthfully its possible the rock wanted to make Billy look bad to get back at him for being hhh friend you never know. I'm not saying it's what happened but its possible
@@Dizzy1980 He was over as was DX despite being heels. Go back and watch the reactions. This only made Rock better as it produced some of the best segments in the Rock's career. Who can forget the "ass cream" segment and the promo that went along with it?

FINALLY...Bruce let's us know the truth about Rock and Shawn. Back then wrestling was so big in my neighborhood we made sure to watch the halftime empty arena match then go outside during the super bowl. I remember a buddy of mine calling during the This Is Your Life Segment and as teenagers we were laughing our asses off
Why are all of Bruce’s episodes on The Rock so underwhelming? It’s almost like Bruce doesn’t know Rock all that well. Rock was basically the backdrop to this episode as they covered a lot of random shit.
Not much to say about Rocky other than the company manufactured everything about him. All his promos were written for him. He had better more talented guys like Foley, Austin, and Triple H to show him how to work & get him over. 4 years in to his run, Rocky left wrestling for a bigger paycheck in Hollywood.
Rschr101 Rock wrote his own promos. Rock said so in his book & Russo has said that Rock created all of his own catchphrases. Russo just gave him direction & bullet points of things to get over. Once Russo left, Brian Gewirtz & Ed Koskey wrote everyone’s promos. Only you guys like Rock, Austin, etc could edit or have creative input, as per Austin & Jericho’s books. Those guys didn’t get him over, because his in-ring work isn’t what got him over aside from the “People’s Elbow.” It was Rock’s promos, mannerisms, catchphrases & charisma that got him over. Stop hatin’.
Ok so this is all they could come up with for rock 99? Didn’t acknowledge how Rock Became the most popular star in the industry by the summer? Not gonna acknowledge that the I Quit Match was voted match of the year. Not gonna mention Rock was Voted Wrestler of the year? Not gonna mention that going into survivor series 99 the fans wanted rock to win over Austin as seen in the Raw and Smackdown episodes leading up! I watched the whole of 99 on the wwe network and that was one of Rocks Best Years and they made it seem like a mediocre year and that rock was still an up and comer. Give me a break
We finally got the answer! Dave Bautista is 14 inches oversize! Now we just gotta figure out the shoe size, know what I mean? Add 14 inches to that, bam, you got Bautista's actual retail size.
HHH should have left DX and joined the corporation. Rock should've been #1 and HHH #2 top guys in corporation. Then bring in the Stephanie mcmahon character not for Test but for the rock. Then have them fall in love and HHH tries to steal Steph but rocky is too cool for that Las Vegas stunt so they'd need a different creative. but a love triangle between HHH The Rock and Stephanie mcmahon would've been a great way to kick off the epic feud between HHH and Rock. Better than the Angle HHH Steph triangle which was good but imagine rock in '99 in that role instead.
Why doesnt Conrad go into the financial drawing power of Rock here like he always does with guys like Austin? Rock broke the gate record in 1999, and there are facts and figures online regarding the merchandise sales which showed at this point in time he was the #1 seller even over Austin. It's easy to find and is a great discussion point, especially as Wade Keller reported at this time that Austin was starting to get a little tense over Rock's growth. Russo has also said this. There's also strong stories that the plan here was for Austin to turn heel at one point. I enjoyed listening but it just feels so lazy here, as if the 'research' was actually a wikipedia check. I've noticed it with the other 2 STW episodes on TheRock and it seems clear in Conrad's 2000 podcast with Jim Ross. Pretty sure Conrad was never a fan of Rock because by contrast, whenever there is a chance to highlight the financial success of other wrestlers, he is all over it. A recent show he focused how some drawing power was down due to Austin being out in 2000, yet completely ignored the numerous other metrics that actually highlighted how Rock had boosted the company even further with it on his back. The #1 source for STW is Dave Meltzer who goes in depth on Rock's record breaking 1999 and 2000, yet Conrad rarely approaches. Why?
@@knowyourroleboulevard7119 and still is!!... Everybody talks about Austin's 98 or Hogan's 87 but Rock's 2000 is close quite possibly the greatest year a professional wrestler has ever experienced
Austin outdrew everybody. Rocks popularity was a result of Austin getting him over and filling those arenas with him. Vince called Austin the greatest of all time. If Rocky drew so much in 99 who was he working with? Austin will always be better. It's cool if you're a Rock fan, but don't pretend as so many do, that Rocky was ever on Austin's level. Stone Cold was and is in a league of his own.
39:00 wow the amount of time he wafted on about JR because Conrad self inserted himself to be offended on JR's behalf is something else. Conrad has one annoying personality.
Let me guess.. when they do Rock 2000 they’re gonna focus on his opponents and say that rock is only the #1 guy because Austin isn’t there.. even tho Rock Became #1 during Summer 99.. how can these guys watch 99 for this podcast and not acknowledge how over the rock was. They made it seem like rock was a top guy the first half of the year and declined the 2nd. The rock was #1 guy in the industry by the 2nd half of the year
You just know that 2000 will end with them putting Austin over Rock because the former main evented November Survivor Series over him. Even though when the reverse happened in 2001 and Rock returned and main evented summerslam, that same logic was never mentioned.

@@dominicstone8109 Austin shattered most of Rock's 2000 PPV numbers the following year in 2001. He also averaged more in 1999 even when Rock was on the same shows. In 1999, he set all-time wrestling box office records in nearly every city in the country, selling out 70 percent of live shows and averaging more than 12,000 paid per night. It may be time to shelve STW until Bruce is gone from WWE and we can get his undivided attention. Also, so Conrad can have more time to work with him and polish up the editing, retake, etc. which made for a better final product in the early years and made me (and many) fall in love with the show.
I agree with all of your comment. It has been going downhill slowly since Bruce went back to Vince. It is understandable though. I respect Bruce a ton & miss the old 4 hour podcasts about guys like Jake the Snake. They got me through delivering pizza way better than listening to the radio ever did
I also find it funny how Conrad seems to show Bischoff, JR, Anderson way more respect/not challenge them, but constantly challenges Bruce in a one-upping fashion on almost every show just because he didn't get the answer he was expecting.
@@rockstarbd82 I think he is mad that what was his best podcast became jeopardized by Bruce's return to the big time. The quality of the show is just dwindling more and more each week.

22:00 No, the REAL STORY is that Rock/Mankind at Royal Rumble 1999 was an unbelievably great match, arguably the best match either man ever had in the WWF. People can shit on it all they want, but it was an incredible display.
The best match that year

Rocky could have killed Foley that night. No excuses. He owes his whole career to Mick.
Oh finally!
Another great pod by CONrad. CONrad rocks.
This show is gonna get better as soon as Bruce gets fired again.
This show might be over soon soon if Vince gets his way
Sad but true.
The Rock clearly got carried away I don't think he meant to hurt Foley but..........and also Foley talks about it in one of his books and says he had no idea how handcuffing his hands behind his back wold negatively affect his ability to protect himself and was hurt bad after the first chairshot
Even though he was 2 years in the business I felt like lack of experience in that situation played a bit of a role in how that all played out
If you watch it back, Foley wouldn’t fall & initially kept charging after him, refusing to stay down as planned.
He did a similar spot in ECW a few years before he was just pissed of cause his family reacted negatively on film
I rek the Rock was more popular during 99/00 than austin was during 97/98
The rock 00-01 99 was still Austin until towards the end mainly summer slam when he stop wrestling every show after survivor series 99 the rock rose to the top cuz it was no Austin then bout time Austin came back his character was stale for the most part ppl got used to him not being around for the most part although ppl didn’t like his heel turn it was best at that moment they messed up by keeping hhh heel instead of a face since rock was leaving for a few months beginning of the end

The Rock's feud with Billy Gunn was ridiculous anyway. A megastar like Rock feuding with a guy obsessed with his ass.
@@Dizzy1980 He was over as was DX despite being heels. Go back and watch the reactions. This only made Rock better as it produced some of the best segments in the Rock's career. Who can forget the "ass cream" segment and the promo that went along with it?
@@pikkon899 I half-agree. Yes, some great Rock promos came out of that. However, Billy Gunn was only over as a member of DX and New Age Outlaws... he NEVER came close to making a splash as a singles wrestler, and his feud with Rock was lopsided on that basis.
Fucking shit. I watch these at 2x speed to get it in faster. I was not ready for how funny Bruce sounded in the intro.

I'm surprised Bruce and Conrad didn't do this earlier.
You should do Bad News Brown and Brooklyn Brawler episodes. Guys we don't already know everything about.
Why are all of Bruce’s episodes on The Rock so underwhelming? It’s almost like Bruce doesn’t know Rock all that well. Rock was basically the backdrop to this episode as they covered a lot of random shit.
Conrad directs the show
Not much to say about Rocky other than the company manufactured everything about him.
I thought the Mick Foley & Rock This Is Your Life promo was great. I was laughing so hard.

Why?
His Live gates number in 2000 were the highest of the whole company ever I believe.
@@knowyourroleboulevard7119 and still is!!... Everybody talks about Austin's 98 or Hogan's 87 but Rock's 2000 is close quite possibly the greatest year a professional wrestler has ever experienced
I don't think Conrad is all that big of a fan of The Rock
Austin outdrew everybody. Rocks popularity was a result of Austin getting him over and filling those arenas with him. Vince called Austin the greatest of all time. If Rocky drew so much in 99 who was he working with?
Austin will always be better. It's cool if you're a Rock fan, but don't pretend as so many do, that Rocky was ever on Austin's level. Stone Cold was and is in a league of his own.
@@Rschr101 there are literal facts to dispute this, but it's cool. Austin is #1 (or 2 behind Hogan) but claiming they arent close? Ludicrous.

Rock never outdrew Austin.
@@Rschr101 overall he didnt, but there were numerous metrics, criteria and periods when he did. Highest ratings period, highest drawing gate in the year 2000, more 500k ppv buys than anyone in WWE history I believe etc. These arent opinions, they're on-record facts. However Austin's 1998 is the peak overall.
Rock will always be 2nd Fiddle to Steve Austin no matter what his numbers were
@@dominicstone8109 Austin shattered most of Rock's 2000 PPV numbers the following year in 2001. He also averaged more in 1999 even when Rock was on the same shows.
Quote from Wrestling Observer: "Austin's main events with the likes of The Rock, The Undertaker, Mick Foley, HHH, owner Vince McMahon and others led to the most successful period in pro wrestling history. In 1999, he set all-time wrestling box office records in nearly every city in the country, selling out 70 percent of live shows and averaging more than 12,000 paid per night. In 2001, as the top star, he led WWF, as WWE was known at the time, to selling nearly 8 million pay-per-view orders in a calendar year, the all-time record for any promotion until UFC topped it in 2010." - Dave Meltzer

Why were they shitting on Russo when they talked about the Hollys winning the tag belts? Russo was gone at that point.
I thought this was a great podcast. Rock had a great 1999. Missing Steve, The Rock knew he had to shine and he did. I think people had rose colored glasses for sure. It had Russo's finger prints all over it. I agree with Bruce and Conrad. I watched it recently. I liked it as a fan but to put yourself in Bruces shoes you have to understand that it went too long. We dont know what segments were cut as a result. What matches were cut. As usual Bruce had to clean up that mess of Russos as usual.
I agree, 15 was the better rock-Austin match, and I was even at 17.
Austin still ruined it by walking out in a fucking t-shirt. What the fuck were you thinking!
He left his vest at home which he admits when he was asked about that match
JJA1987 oh ok, I figured there had to be a good reason cuz I’m sure no one thought that was a good idea lol.

Yet The Rock gave Angle, Y2J & Brock their first world title!! One could throw in Mankind into that also BUT Mankind’s first title win was bigger than just The Rock losing!!
Also who did Austin get over or who did Taker get over?
Tbh it was only Mankind & Shawn during his second run that helped get people over. Or Bret Hart
Did Austin had good matches with low caliber wrestlers ? Who did he put over from 98-99 he didn’t even work a PPV program with a mid card
@@humblesmith1215 That's a very good point. Also I think I have to add HHH to that list of guys getting people over. He got Rikishi and Jericho in 00 really over by letting them both beat his ass in their 1st match-up against each other.
