      People of all cultures have people that take pride in what they do and are very dedicated. It is not some universal thing where all Japanese people are like this, and the weird mysticism people have about Japanese people always comes up whenever there's a video showing japanese people doing amazing things. But you take videos of people doing amazing things from other cultures and nobody is like, "everyone from that place is so dedicated". Just weird that this is applied to all japanese people because some japanese people are like that

    This is very different from the medieval European arrows I have seen made. The finished arrows are more similar to modern arrows than the European ones. The European ones I have seen made left the string wrapping on the fetchings and tended to either be thickest in the middle or thicker toward the point, rather than perfectly parallel.
    The biggest difference was the nocks. In the European ones, before the nock is cut, the end is sawn to make a slot and a slip of cow or goat horn is glued in. The nock is then cut perpendicular to the horn. Because the arrows are tapered, the nock is bulbous and bigger than the end of the arrow it's on. These arrows seem to rely on the string wrap near the end to keep the nock from breaking.
    I have heard bamboo arrows have a similar shaft strength to modern carbon fiber arrows.
    Overall, I think these arrows would be more accurate. I think the European arrows focused more on being tough, perhaps because their wood isn't as good, or maybe due to differences in armor. Or maybe it's just different priorities.
    Very nice arrows.

      What do you think about Korean bows and arrows?

    • @frankteunissen6118
      @frankteunissen6118 Рік тому +1

      Of course in European warfare accuracy with the bow and arrow wasn’t the point. Firepower was. English longbowmen would shoot their arrows at 45 degrees angle into the air above a line of charging knights. The successive volleys, shot off at rapid intervals would find enough targets to winnow the ranks of the charging knights to make it feasible for the pikemen to bring the remaining ones down.

    What bird are the feathers (fletchings) from? What kind of wood are the shafts made out of? Domo arigato (3 X Nippon style bows) are these arrows for practice? Are there arrows used for contests or shooting from horseback different? Does each arrow shop or master arrowsmith have their own mark?

    Beautiful Craftsmanship !! What a lost art. I used to make my own Cedar arrows. Cut raw shafts, stained them, clear coat, then fletch them with a left wing natural barred turkey feather with a left helical twist, for rotation and stability and taper the ends for field points. Then align the grain of the wood to be perpendicular to the riser of the bow, before gluing on the nocks, so that all the arrows , flex the same out of the bow, and have consistent spine.

    I really appreciated the care given to the scything wrap on the front end of the fletching's. Shooting off the thumb makes this detail a must since a feather buried under your skin is no fun at all. As I understand it, this shooting style is more about form than accuracy. Lovely demonstration too. Thankyou ladies.

    I would have liked to have seen how the bamboo shafts are made and sorted and how this differs from wooden shafts. How do the nodes in the bamboo affect the spine of the arrow? Everything else that was shown is how basically everyone makes their arrows, although the finish was at a high standard. Also would have been nice to see how the arrowhead is attached to the shaft. Do you still use arrowheads with a tang vs a socket because of the hollow bamboo?
