I just picked up the flute this summer. I've been a percussionist for quite some time now and always loved the sound of the flute (especially in the area of jazz). I thought at first I was just too old (55) to start learning how to play another instrument but with lessons and your helpful advice I am not as frustrated. Thank you so much. I have a long way to go with this instrument but your instructional clips is giving me the confidence to stay with it.

Trying to learn the flute again after a few years of not playing it. I used to be in my school band but I quit. I'm learning it again for funsies and nostalgia.

Yes she does. There is no one way to hold the flute. The purpose of what I said was that you want to hold the flute in such a way as not to impede the performance of the fingers (which means that the fingers are in proper alignment and are relaxed to allow for maximum technique). As an educator I advocate holding the flute in the 45 degree relaxed manner to help maximize good technique. David

Hi.. I was trying flute for nearly a month and it was exactly this posture that got me into getting it right. It came out of intuition/trial and error and im now glad to know that I'm doing it right. I picked up so many things really fast after that posture. Thanks a lot.
I have one problem though. I'm not able to get sharp notes right for the top three fingers (B,A,C). For the bottom three notes I'm able to get it by making my mouth go forward (like one does when kissing) and making the aperture smaller. For the top three notes I'm not sure why I'm not getting it, maybe I'm not getting a small enough aperture?

Isn't that Paula Robinson always play her flute bend upwards?
