Another wow! I am a woodwind doubler - saxes, clarinet, bassoon - and never felt comfortable with the flute, specially its low register. I'll certainly follow Dr Klee's advice and report back.
You are such a great flûte teacher, your students are so lucky. I learned from you so much foundational knowledge about flûte, can't thank you enough. Also feel frustrated about the reality that my teacher never taught these. Thanks again!

Well done. I'm a self-taught flute player, and it took me years to discover this by accident--which is incidentally a very good reason not to self-teach on the flute. Anyway, this was long ago, and I had an inexpensive nickel flute, which I blamed for the poor sound I got in the second (never mind the third!) octave. --Until I let a real flutist play it. I was amazed at the sound he got from my cheap flute. That persuaded me that it was my fault, not the flute's, and I started to experiment in earnest. This was long before the Internet, and I had no money for lessons at the time. I found that, just as you've taught in this video, if I relaxed my lips and made more of an almost whistling embouchure as I went up the second octave, the sound was much much better. The relaxation part came later. It's counterintuitive, since we expect, from other instruments, to have to tighten up as we play higher notes. But the flute isn't a trumpet or a sax, and the rules are different. I still have a lot to learn, but these videos are a great help.

few things that I never knew, in my entire career, I could see it in here. Though my flute is not a modern key flute, its just a bamboo flute with no keys, yet,,, there's so much I've learned
Thanks so much for this video. I'm working on my high register I have bin playing for 7 years on and of not taking it to serious. The last 3 month's iv bin sticking to practicing 4 to 5 days a week I have improved more in the last 3 month's than in the last 7 years. Didn't think scales would be so fun. All your video's have bin a great help. I can't afford lessons so UA-cam and the Web are my only way. Thank you agen I really mean it. :-)

Great tip.,until I saw this video my lower lip was always crushed between the flute and my teeth , now I am more gentle and let my lower lip be free and change it as you said in the video. My super high notes are coming out now and middle c is so much better as well as other notes. Thanks ! Winks Lisa

I had open heart surgery in 2007 and again in 2010 and I decided to take up flute as a challenge after trying it in 1965.Are you related to Harry Klee? My late friend,Skeets Herfurt,worked with him in the Hollywood studios as far back as 1946.I'm 68 years old now and I found it was harder than it looked.

No. The bamboo flute does use a altered version of the metal flute embouchure. I personally do not play one so I am not to person to advise you how to form the embouchure for the bamboo flute. I would suggest trying to find some UA-cam videos on playing the bamboo flute and watch them taking into particular account how they form their embouchure to the flute. Good luck!! David

This video helped me so much with getting the high notes out! I never realized that you needed to relax your lips. Thanks sooo much!!
