    Love the emphasis on color and saturation rather than compression to enhance sustain and character of the drums. Awesome video Daniel!

      Thanks so much! Definitely working on it... it's more work than I thought, and I really thought it would be a lot of work. No real plan for a schedule here but I think a video every 2 or 3 weeks is the goal.

    Congratulations Daniel, lotta gems in here, incredible to see how much our profession can expand with time, I record for almost 20 years and I still learned a lot with your video. Keep up!

    I just happened to find you today… amazing amazing. I recorded my blinker in my car last week on my phone and dumped it into a session and chopped it and added vocoder and some real vocal air and then used it to write a full song… had the best time. Thank you for your work.

    I knew you were going to say Eric Valentine before you said it. I'm pretty sure he spiked the sales of Saturn after showing that trick on his channel. I know it's why I bought it! I'm also a fan of the Oxford Drum Gate, and am glad to see others are getting hip to it as well.

      The fact that Eric is so open about everything was a big part of me finally doing this channel... I mean, there are no secrets anymore, obviously, but seeing his joy in spreading the knowledge is really inspiring. Thanks for watching and for the comment!

    I put that studder A800 on all my master tracks but I have to fine tune it just right. I just got my first drum kit and only have Apollo twin 2 inputs but been able to get some really clean recordings. Fyi my studio is sound treated so its nice and tight sounding.

      happy it's so tweakable though, the bias settings get a regular workout here for sure

    Another great tip with Saturn, create another band at around 45hz and below, turn the dynamics knob to the left. The more you do it, it’ll clean and tighten up the subby low end on the kick like using a gate

  • @buhlir
    @buhlir Рік тому

    Duude.. Excellent work! I’ve been on about this too in my recordings as well. It’s so fun! And that kick is so phat! Love that you credit Eric for Saturn. I think that’s so cool when engineers have the ability to do that. Well done!

    Sonnox Drum Gate is an amazing tool! The separate band/FQ decay control + gate opening/closing learning + dynamic levelling are game changers!!
    Any reverb recommendation for creating a nice fake drum room when recorded drums are too dry?

    • @DanielHolter

      I'm a fan of the Ocean Way studio plugin from UA, when I want to go down that route. Seems like the believability of that approach really depends on what you feed it, works really well with some sort of "human ear" stereo setup, in my experience.
      Thanks for watching and the comment/question, I appreciate it!

    Nice video! Will look into a few of these plugins. Devil-Loc is always on my drum bus.

      That thing is so useful on all kinds of sources. I'm still surprised how often it ends up on my vocal tracks, just sitting at 2 or 3% mix, it's super vibey.

  • @julioalvarez3788

    Good stuff. Nice groove and drum sounds. Did the drummer play to a click or did you create a tempo map to his (click-less) playing so that you can loop the percussion bits?

    • @DanielHolter
      @DanielHolter  Рік тому +1

      This was definitely done to a click, as we had parts from the demo that we already created, so Sean was playing along to those. I try to keep things pretty natural, though, for this type of music... as opposed to putting all the hits on the grid, so hopefully that comes through here. Any edits I did are visible in the ProTools window (I didn't commit earlier edits, for example). Thanks for checking out the video, I appreciate it!

  • @vineyardrecordingstudio
    @vineyardrecordingstudio Рік тому

    So you didn't use any reverb at all? Interesting. Think it is genre specific since indie pop is more about dry/dead drums?

    • @DanielHolter
      @DanielHolter  Рік тому +1

      no reverb on this one, just that trashed out talkback mic that was facing the room

    Excellent, with that creative sample making bit round the 10 min mark! Samples are crap, and should never be used!!!! EVER!

    • @sub-jec-tiv
      @sub-jec-tiv Рік тому +1

      Except that technically even Mellotron is ‘samples.’ Would you say Strawberry Fields Forever suffers from using ‘samples?’ Yes, most commercial preset sample packs are garbage and boring. But I’ve been creating a library of my own sounds for 25 years; everything from guitars to strings to synths to field recordings. I use ‘samples’ all the time in sampler instruments, synthesizers, drum machines, in my own work… but any time they’re used, they bring in great emotion and vibe, and *my own* emotion and vibe.
      Never EVER use samples? I just can’t agree with your blanket statement!!!! EVER!

    • @DanielHolter
      @DanielHolter  Рік тому

      my issues with samples are more about business realities/practicality and creativity rather than philosophy or some deep aversion, but I'm glad it resonated with you!

    • @thesnipecatcher116
      @thesnipecatcher116 Рік тому

      I try not to overthink it, but I avoid samples because… I dunno, just doesn’t feel like it’s ‘mine’ anymore
