I wanted to post this sooner, but with the fires in LA, I've had a few delays, and it also felt a little tasteless to be doing a series that's based in post-disaster Los Angeles 😅 Thankfully things are starting to settle down, so thank you to everyone who reached out! Barring any catastrophes, FALLOUT Episode 6 is scheduled for Tuesday, January 28th, and Episode 7 for next Friday, January 31st.
It’s not entirely the same thing, but when The Last of Us Part 2 the video game came out, it was decidedly unsettling to play a game about a worldwide pandemic at the outset of our own real world pandemic via Covid. So I understand those feelings. In any case stay safe and it’s great to see your reactions to this again, it just keeps getting better and better and more and more fecked up, it’s fantastic!
We understand fully, Jacqui. Have family and friends in The Zone, luckily none of them had to evacuate (In Riverside myself). I kept good thoughts you wouldn't have to bail and assumed the delay was due to the fires. Take care.
Might have been mentioned before but how good is Moises as Lucy's brother? He really owns that slow burn of increasing intensity as his quest for the truth gives him purpose in life.
I'l confess something: I love the main trio (Lucy, Maximus and the Ghoul), but I think my favorite is, I think Norm. Him doing the detective work and actively seeking the truth (as opposed to Lucy, that has the truth thrown her way. No shade on the fantastic character, her arc is amazing too) is something impressive to see.
Yeah, the whole Norm/Chet interaction was super great, and Norm is a very interesting character for sure. He's my favorite too. I hope we see more of both him and Chet (working together) in season 2...not sure how that would work, but I'm hoping.
I recently heard a variation of this Gumpism. It'd be a lecture from a Budhist monk, who wrote this on a blackboard: "everybody wants to save the world, but nobody wants to help their mother washing the dishes".
Well, Maximus does seem to be rolling a low intelligence run sometimes through out this series, so that tracks. Though he has a high luck with an idiot savant perk going on as well.
It's also one of the core principles of the game. Each major faction (such as The Brotherhod of Steel) has their own idea of how to save the world, how to move forward and reform society etc.
Well, the Battle Hymn of the Republic is a bit older than Gory Gory Hallelujah (Blood Upon the Risers), it comes from the marching song The Body of John Brown used by the Union. The text was then Changed by Julia Ward Howe into The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Both Brown and Howe being part of the Abolitionist Movement.
One thing I love is the dichotomy of Lucy and Norman. Lucy is a powerhouse, brilliant, willful, strong, but naive to a dangerous degree. Norman, her counter-balance, is in many ways frail, but when it comes to the games of politics and intrigue, within days he’s going toe to toe with Betty. His, “Great job cleaning up,” line is tops!
The thing I love about this show is as I watch for the second time through your eyes, I not only remind myself of WHY I absolutely love this show and am excited for Season 2, but also picking up on things here and there (no spoilers) that set things up later in the season that feel so obvious now. Betty is one creepy lady and for very good reason, when you find out about her. You also got to see the New California Republic for the first time (one of the major factions in the games) and remember Shady Sands. That's going to come back at some point. Again, no spoilers.
A lot of people forget that Max told Lucy his name was Titus back in episode 2. It seemed like Lucy genuinely forgot, and maybe she did, but she asked his name right after telling him about her trust issues. That raises the possibility that she remembered and was testing him. Since Max was at her mercy, maintaining the lie was the safer choice.
Lucy has been doing a lot of leveling up over the last few episodes as those Rad Roaches are not even a threat anymore. And Jacqui has been learning well the lessons of Fallout, paranoia is normal, because there's always something lurking in the shadows. So leveling up all around.👍
Let's see. Vault 15 opened in 2097 (due to overcrowding), Vault 8 was given the all clear in 2091 becoming Vault City, Vault 81 was opened by the Overseer in 2287, Vault 21 opened in 2274 when it was taken over by Mr House, Vault 3 opened up because of a Water Leak (not specified when) and most of the residents of Vault 34 left due to overpopulation (technically it remained sealed and the remaining residents mostly became ghouls). I think all of the rest of the Vaults remained sealed or their experiments destroyed them. The point I'm making is that some Vaults had "early" openings or "Reclamation Days" usually as part of their experiments. The residents of Shady Sands were partly overland survivors and partly Vault 15 descendants.
I just found out in another reaction, that tay-tos, are a cross breed between a tomato, and a potato. The taste is apparently like fries and moldy ketchup.
Good to see you back Jacqui! I Found Norms and Chets conversation to be very interesting! especially the line you didn't include in the edit, "you might as well be asking why everyone prefers jell-o cake to apple pie, I don't know why" if something as american as apple pie has been "phased out" within the vaults, I wonder what other American things has gone the same way?
I'm pretty claustrophobic, and I have to admit as cool as the T-60 is, being frozen in place while the armor is being chewed through by the radroaches is 100% nightmare fuel
Once you've finished the season, do yourself a favour, read up on all the various Vaults and how they were handled... some fun, interesting, and horrifying options out there :D
I'd recommend something like a "top 10 worst vaults" video. As well as the opening cinematic for all 5 games. FNV's opening would fill in blanks on the setting, while FO4's is a powerful look at the prewar mindset that led to the End.
Yeah, it's threatening but it doesn't make any sense for her to say that to Norman. He knows how the Vault works. Bodies go to compost for precious nutrients, prewar tech would be preserved and passed down.
@@arellajardin8188 I think it does make sense, as it's a veiled threat. She said that she and Hank were the ones that "buried" his mother, and given her look and tone, I took it as an implication that Rose had been poking around and they had gotten rid of her... which Betty is willing to do to Norm if he doesn't back off.
That anguished, uncomprehending, "Why?!" from Lucy after the run in with the Fiends is, I think, the most emotionally hammering moment in the series. Sums up my reaction to most of the terrible things going on in the world right now too :le sigh:
If you fancy a totally different take on the 'living in an underground bunker' thing, but with a heavier dose of mystery and a much darker tone, you might want to look at Silo. Season 2 finished recently. Rebecca Ferguson & Tim Robbins are in it, although the entire cast is on form. You can tell it's a labour of love.
8:45 - "Glory, Glory, [sic] what a helluva way to die"... guess you still have Band of Brothers on your mind? As others have mentioned, the song is the "Battle Hymn of the Republic".
12:00 In the games there are things called charisma checks. where you succeed or fail based on your character's charisma. This undoubtedly was a high charisma check.
May I recommend the Amazon anthology series Secret Level. it's by the team behind Love Death & Robots and is a 15-episode series its episodes are taken from Computer Games.
The power armor being able to be shut of from the outside locking the pilot inside seems like a major designflaw to me. Could be that Maximus just doesn't know how to manually open the suit. Then again this is the parody of the US Military and we have already seen some major designflaws of that armor. 5:40 That lie makes no sense. The name would not make any difference to Lucy. Also in some fantasy Knight cultured this is how it goes. The crusaders in Diablo would have a squire and the squires would take theplace of their fallen master, gear, name and all.
This was the weakest episode for me, though now i realize it's sort of a transitional episode. Also, I think they undersell how important it is that civilization had restarted and only just recently fell apart again. The New California Republic spanned hundreds of square miles and was relatively "safe." They had cities, laws, taxes. The fact that everything is now lawless and dangerous is a big deal.
I so want to see you play a Fallout game... There is so much "nuance" that you are missing. Don't get me wrong, the show is great and does a great job telling a "Fallout Story"... BUT.. Playing the games add so much depth to what you are seeing, knowing and experiencing. Playing the games don't add too much in the "spoiler" category but add to the experience of the the show.
Oh no, I forgot to come back to it! 🙈 Apparently when ERW was playing Dolores in Westworld, she would do this trick where she looked somewhere with her eyes first before turning her head, and it made her seems super creepy and robotic. Betty's look there made me think of that.
BE PRPEPAREDFOR ONE OF THE CRINGIEST SCENES IN THE WHOLE SERIES NEXT EPISODE. sorry for the caps. Also awesome to see you enjoying this, been a Fallout player myself for years.
Different time, different media environment. Today there would be a HUGE social media campaign to save Firefly and the rights to make it would probably get sold to Amazon or some other streaming service like they did with the Expanse.

Episode 7 on my birthday. I'll take it.
I’m glad you’re ok. I’m also from the LA area (east of the city), and seeing all this happening has been rough. Take care of yourself! 😊

Absolutely!
he is hands down my fav character in this show. The intrigue behind his storyline is IMMENSE
Ella Purnell's American accent is amazing
Vault 31 uses Solent mash potatoes, where the taste varies from person to.person.
You really get to appreciate and value those around you that have good taste.
