  • This could possibly be the world's rarest formation displays in the world, or at least over a Royal Air Force station; a Messerschmitt Me262, P-51 Mustang, a Rolls Royce Spitfire and AB910 Spitfire of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF).
    It is one thing having a P-51 Mustang 413779 (WD-C) or a Spitfire XIX owned by Rolls Royce (PS853) at RAF Coningsby, but to have a Messerschmitt Me262 (D-IMTT) is just a rarity in its own right. And as if this wasn't enough, these all join into formation to display along with the RAFs own BBMF Spitfire AB910. What a sight, what a sound.
    MESSERSCHMITT Me262 D-IMTT
    There are no original Me 262s flying in the world today, but five reproduction 262s were built in the USA in the 1990s and early 2000s, of which four are currently airworthy. Taking guidance from fragments of drawings and an original two-seater training aircraft, which was used as a model, all the parts for the reproduction 262s were made from scratch and no original components were installed. With the poor reliability of the original Jumo jet engines the decision was taken to fit modern jet engines to the Me 262 reproductions, which are powered by General Electric CJ610 turbojets, derived from the military J85, with around 2,500 lbs of thrust each. The new engines are concealed inside detailed reproductions of the original Jumo 004B engine shells and nacelles.
    The Messerschmitt Foundation’s reproduction Me 262 (D-IMTT) made its first flight on 15 August 2005 in Seattle, Washington, and after a brief period of testing and shakedown flying it was then dismantled, packed up and transported to its new home in Manching, Germany. After reassembly and ground tests, it flew from Manching for the first time on 25 April 2006, piloted by Horst Philipp. Reproduction Me 262 D-IMTT is operated by Flugmuseum Messerschmitt and supported by the Airbus Heritage Flight.
    P-51 MUSTANG WD-C
    Built at the North American Aviation production line at Inglewood California in mid 1944 with the serial number 44-73877.
    Assigned to the USAAF from July 1945 - 1951. It then served with the Royal Canadian Air Force 403 ‘City of Calgary’ Squadron until April 1959 when it was retired.
    WD-C then passed into private ownership before undergoing a major restoration. It was then a regular on the airshow circuit carrying a number of markings. In April 2020 WD-C took the colours of Col Donald Blakeslee, Commanding officer of the 4th Fighter Group, the Debden Eagles.
    Colonel Blakeslee flew more combat missions than any other American fighter pilot, and stood credited with 15.5 confirmed kills. Blakeslee’s personal standing among Allied pilots was considerable. British ace Johnnie Johnson described him as “One of the best leaders ever to fight over Germany”.
    ROLLS ROYCE SPITFIRE PR XIX PS853
    Supermarine Spitfire PS853 was built at Southampton and delivered to the central Photographic Reconnaissance Unit at Benson on January 13th 1945. Sold to Rolls Royce PLC, Corporate Heritage Department, Bristol-Filton during September 1996.
    SPITFIRE AB910
    On the 19th August 1942, AB910 flew in one of the largest air battles of any war in history. Through fierce fighting, it flew four sorties over the English Channel in support of Operation Jubilee, an Allied-attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe.
    This monumental struggle saw the RAF lose 62 spitfires - more than in any other single day throughout WWII. AB910, however, survived unscathed and emerged victorious.
    At just 20 years old, Flying Officer Eric Doorly was AB910’s regular pilot and flew three of AB910’s four sorties in support of Operation Jubilee. AB910’s third patrol that day
    was piloted by Flight Sergeant ‘Dixie’ Alexander. It was Alexander who claimed a German Dornier Do 217, sending it crashing into a field south of Dieppe - AB910’s
    sole kill of the war.

    The sequence from around 12 minutes onwards to when they fly over took my breath away. Not a sight I thought I would ever see. And to think around 80 years ago they would have been trying to blow each other put of the sky!! Brave men all back then. Wonderful tribute and an amazing sight. Thanks for that. Very special indeed

      This reminds me of the excitement just north of Ware on the A10 when the Vulcan was doing test circuits. People literally stopped their cars to watch. 2010 probably.

    I caught the landings before I went to work this morning. I loved the way they lined up for take off. Unique to see these four planes in close formation. Thank you.

    I had the fortunate opportunity to meet Herb Tischler in Fort Worth circa 1996 while he was reverse engineering these 262's. He and my Father spent two hours talking about engineering. Both had grown up during the war. Was a pleasure. Great to see one of them up in the air. I believe there were five total being built at the time with United States Navy Pensacola museum providing an original for the reverse engineering.

      Hi John, the Me 262 has no ejection seat?

    • @gazza2933
      @gazza2933 11 місяців тому +1

      @@meertenwelleman4600
      Interesting one
      According to Google.
      Me 262 pilots did rarely eject from their aircraft during WW2. I find this a bit strange as the seat was a British invention circa 1945.

    • @meertenwelleman4600
      @meertenwelleman4600 11 місяців тому

      Hi, they did not eject because they landed safely or were killed in action?

    • @frankkeustermans1223
      @frankkeustermans1223 11 місяців тому +2

      @gazza2933
      The ejection seat may be known for the fine werk Martin Baker did after WW2, but it was by no means a British invention. The He-162 and He-219 already had them at the end of the war…

    • @davidelliott5843
      @davidelliott5843 11 місяців тому +1

      Martin-Baker started to investigate pilot ejection systems from 1934. Germany and Sweden proposed similar systems in 1938. MB concluded that an explosive-powered ejection seat was the best solution.
      The first practical use by a British pilot was in 1949, during tests of Armstrong Whitworth A.W.52 flying wing aircraft.

    Saw the 262 at RIAT. AMAZING to see fly!! Also it is great to see the RR Spitfire return 'home' as she was part of the BBMF until she was sold to fund the repair/rebuild of Hurricane LF363 after her crash landing in the 1990s

      LF363- broken camshaft if i recall correctly. Quite a bizarre failure. Not sure if there was a panic x-ray regime for other Merlins after that.

    Technically the Meteor beat it by a couple of weeks, and there were vague plans to make the original Whittle test bed aircraft into some kind of interceptor. The latter didn't happen, obvs, but the Meteor was JUST first into action.

    As others have said the overhead pass at 15 and the solo 262 at 20 is something else. Both spits are tail up almost immediately and off the ground soon after. Surprised at the tardiness of the Mustang on take off. Also demonstartes the main issue with the 262 is that it requires a very long take off and landing distance so can be be picked off easily. Formidable in the air is the 262 and if Mr H. would have used it as a fighter rather than a fighter bomber there may have been a different result. The English Electric Lightning came less than ten years after the second world war thanks to the work of Sir Freddie Page, an aircraft that is still exceptional today. A time when anything was possible and great people made sure it happened!
