Vallejo Xpress - First Impressions, Upsides & Downsides [How I Paint Things]

  • A few odd audio clicks and echoes in a couple of segments today - my apologies for these, but they're short! Thanks again to Vallejo for letting me have a play with this new range of 'one and done' paints. Dead surprised by how well they turned out after a splash of Game Color Wash over the top!
Since it'll no doubt come up: I can't compare them to the Army Painter Speedpaint line since I don't have any Speedpaint. The reactivation issue is simply a deal breaker for me - I love their other products, but I haven't got room on my shelf for paints I can't just paint over once they're dry. Speedpaint 2.0 claims to have 'mostly solved' the reactivation issue, but I also haven't got any of those. 🤷‍♂️

Just in time! I recently ordered a dozen of these paints and (having so far skipped out on Contrast-style paints entirely) I can't wait to try them out! I especially look forward to using them for a grisaille/slapchop-style painting for my eh, prodigious pile of unfinished miniatures. Thanks for the overview, I'll definitely give the "wet plate under hard palette" trick a try too.

Maybe its just because I'm used to looking at minis that have gone through the classic paint + wash process and/or more realism-based or grimy looking paint jobs, but that Wizard jumped out at me immediately when I started the video. It looks great! I would happily use that as-is.

Inspirational work as always! I recently picked up half of the range, mostly due to half of it being out of stock and I did not need all of them.. I find the purple the hardest to work with so far but I am absolutely loving the bright blue and browns. I'm tempted to use the reds on my sisters of the bloody rose, but I've already started painting with regular citadel reds so they might appear out of place with the rest of the army. Anyways, beautiful work!

Yet another cracking video mate, great to get some honest impressions of the whole range. Xpress seems to be more consistent across the whole range than contrast, but as i've only got four colours so far that may just be the ones I picked ! When I bought mine, I was advised to get some medium as well, but I've not had a chance to experiment with it so far, so am interested to see how it alters the paint when used

I must admit the last one with the washes really knocked it out of the park. The last minis I usually painted with slap chop style, mainly with contrast paints. But this looks like an awesome alternative, really love how the face looks! Haven't tried Xpress yet, but I sure will. I'm guessing they are even better for slap chop than Contrast Paints because of their slightly lesser pigmentation... And especially not as different in how opaque their different colors are. With contrast I almost always have to thin them down with medium for slap chop, especially colors like Wyldwood or Cygor Brown.. Other I never thin down, like Magos Purple... Don't enjoy that inconsistency... Xpress look more like they don't need thinning down at all for slapchop.

Wow, I have to say I'm impressed with the finished results for those minis. I do not paint a ton with contrasts. I tend to use them more to add effects like rust, tarnish, etc. to my minis, but I have used them almost exclusively to paint a few, with mixed results. But these look pretty damn nice. I even like how the space marine turned out, and I usually dislike marines painted wholly with contrasts. They seem to do much better over large, flat surface areas than GW contrasts (can't say anything for Army Painter Speed paints as I have not used that line, but would like to). And that wizard's color scheme is a blast from the past. Reminds me of a cartoon character from 1980's Dungeons & Dragons animated series, or something like He-Man or Thundarr The Barbarian. The turquoise color is brilliant. I also have to give a shout out to Station Forge. Their guard models are great. I REALLY like their corrupted guard. Way cheaper option than GW and, in my opinion, way more character to them as well.

I use a wet palette with no issues.
Space Grey isn't grey at all, it's blue.
I had the opposite feel of Templar White, I found it useless. I had a hard time even telling a difference between what was primed and what had been painted.
My Dwarf Skin dries way darker with a strong copper tone, yours seems much lighter. Weird.
Love the Black Lotus, really wish there was a bone / khaki as I've had mixed success thinning Wasteland Brown.

My one wish with these paints would be that they had a better distribution system because these things have been teased by multiple big hobby sites including elementgames and wayland games since November and every time the supposed restock date comes and goes with no change, only for them to tack another couple of weeks onto the date. I emailed EG at one point to ask when they were actually getting stock and their customer rep said within 2 weeks... that was 6 weeks ago and they still aren't in stock.

check out juanhidalgo's video titled "Can you paint vehicles with SLAPCHOP? NO AIRBRUSH". there he paints a vehichle in green that turns out amazing using these paints. he has more videos using these paints, but that one stood out to me because he's painting something with very big, flat surfaces.

Hopefully it didn't put you off! 😂 I think the one really major 'issue' with them so far is being just 23 colours. Being able to shade and wash them super easily is nice, but I'm seriously looking forward to when they announce wave two.

Looks really garish and cartoony to me. Might be good for comic characters.
