the greenstuff world dipping inks arent even really comparable, they're so desaturated that they have completely different uses.

They look nice but seem very desaturated. It seems like Army Painter speedpaint is still the one to go with when painting out hordes since it gives decent shades and highlights.
I think they appear that way because they didn't use a pure white prime, they did grey with a zenithal of white, so it doesn't come out as vibrant as it normally would with white.
Ya I'm gonna agree with you here. I'll wait to see some other reviews to double check. But I'd they look like this video. I'm gonna wait for the full army painter line to be ready
I have a 24-set of them since last week, and they do appear a tiny bit more desaturated over grey or black with a white zenithal, but a second coat usually fixes that (if you want to fix it, I actually find it fairly useful for shadows and lower midtones). It's also not an issue at all when used over white.
Also, it might partly be due to their camera setup or how they thin them, because mine generally seem more saturated (except for that light grey-blue, but that one is obvious, no?)
Can't really compare it to citadel contrasts though as I don't own any, because I don't support GW's frankly pretty disgusting overpricing policy.
Yeah this feels like it should've been named "Vallejo model colour Xpress" instead of "game color xpress"
@@sciencesold_ I keep seeing all these review videos and they all do the same thing (some sort of zenithal or non white base color). I'd just like to see them over Vallejo white primer or citadel white scars primer. Then we'd have a nice comparison. Same with Army Painter speed paint & citadel contrast paints. Just white primer and then paint! On a side note every time I've done a zenithal and then tried using either my contrast paints or speed paints it feels like a total fail. Very desaturated/discoloration.
I was wracking my brain the whole time watching this because the paint looked like something that I couldn't place my finger on. Water colors. The finished results look like watercolor paintings!

Well said, they do! Too desaturated. But probably useful as we can apply two coats of different colours for infinite hues.
I still don't think this is THE way of painting. Opaque paint just can't be replaced. This is merely one more tool

Im an Army painter speed paint boy and I feel the Valejjo stuff looks like the lighter end of the colours spectrum does not pop, maybe to eye its better but Imma stick with my speedys.
Yes they look much closer to Green Stuff Worlds dipping inks, and since they come in a 60ml bottle i will stick with GSW.
I would like to see this test again without the wet pallet. I didn't use one when I tested a couple of the colors and had different results. I had a dark blue and velvet red and they went on with a punch of color. I think your thinning in the wet pallet changed your results.

idk, seemed like these colors were on the dull and flat side compared to contrast more vibrant colors.
You can achieve the same result in an extra layer, with more control. They are different tools with different leans

Even with all that studio equipment and perfect setting, and well-versed miniature painters...those models still look just...meh. I dont know if i should expect more out of speed paints. It just seems they are hyped so much and to say they "murder" citadel contrast...nah. You guys do realize citadel also makes a contrast medium that can thin out theirs just the same as what you found with Vallejo, right?

8:15 this is why I think starting with the dark colour first works better as getting the yellow over the black would make much of a difference.
I was hoping you'd test it through the airbrush as that's how I tend to use contrast. Well maybe a future video for you.
Why put contrast paints with an airbrush? The paint doesn't get into crevices this way, unlike when put with a brush. It might be good as a filter / glaze on flat surfaces, though.

Paint assist. Because contrast is transparent it works really good. I do it all the time. Plus with an Airbrush you get a smoother Finish compared to applying it via brush
@@Stevie28 contrast paints are also translucent when put with a regular brush. Finish looks better with an airbrush though.
@@Deus888 granted it isn't the intended use of contrast paints but it certainly is a benefit. Given their translucency and consistency they act like inks but apply like paint through an airbrush allowing you to take full advantage of underpainting.
For a better idea of how well they work, I recommend watching Vince Venturella's Hobby Cheating video on painting big monsters (episode 309 of his hobby cheating series)
It's just like using an airbrush and ink to do tinting. It looks good but definitely the "contrast" part of the paint doesn't do much, and if you're using an airbrush you're likely mixing in your own additives, so I don't see what the hype is. I guess it's premixed, but basically any of the existing contrast style paints will work fine
I'm not a fan. All the colors to me look really washed out. They flow a lot but are way too light. They need more pigment. Maybe with multiple coats it would be okay but at that point I would just use layer paint.
I'm super glad these are so nice! I've been looking at them for a bit and I'll keep them on my list! Id also be interested in hearing your opinions on the army painter speed paints in more detail! I was WONDERING if those were going to little reboot friends! Super excited to see them in action!

id be interested to see how these perform through an airbrush, as thats a fairly consistent way to get good gradients that still match any shading when done with contrast paints
I dont think airbrush is good express paint aplicator. You need wet puddle where paint can distribute itself and sink in recess areas leaving highligted areas pigmentless.
I know its not the intended method, but contrast paints are great for preserving any values you get from zenithal highlights and other stuff. Would be interesting to see if the express paints function similarly

Why is the primer so grainy, this really isn't doing any justice to this type of paint.
I think it's mostly the layer lines from printing the models

@@warherd_miniaturesThere's certainly plenty of voxel lines but there's obviously also a lot of speckling from shitty rattlecan white primer.
White tends to be chalky in general. It's also happens more if it's cold out when you prime. ... But I think Australia is in summer now (?)
@@eyflfla cold or wet environments can ruin rattle can paint primers. It was the driving factor for using airbrush primer with a size six needle. Near the same coverage, better volume control, and smooth flat primes.

Vallejo makes great stuff.. here's the problem though.. When I order GW paints, they tend to arrive. Vallejo just kinda shows up when it wants to due to supply issues even now. At least from an FLGS perspective. Keeping True Metal, Model Color or Model Air in stock properly is an effort in futility.
Maybe that explains why ive never seen the game air silver all the youtubers rave about on the shelf anywhere
@@caseco4979 it is the best metallic around. I ended up caving and got it on Amazon. It was pretty worth, but if thats not your thing try to see if any proacryl is in your FLGS its pretty good. Their bronze actually has good coverage
@@caseco4979 We had an entire rack of the True Metal line not long after lockdown lifted and have yet to ever receive a restock despite repeated attempts. Game/Model color trickle in sporadically.
One of my curiosities with Express Paint was how they'd behave over metallics. I was told the result might disappoint due to their matte finish, but I am happy to see that they do not disappoint. The result looks great. Can't wait for them to become available at my local hobby shops.
The matte finish does knock the metallics down a bit though. In my tests so far I've drybrushed and/or highlighted some parts again afterwards to keep the metallic look, but then again, that's what you should do anyway.
Is Contrast Paint just more saturated wash?
If that's the case, it's no surprise that Xpress is a bit worse than Citadel. Many people say that Vallejo's washes are not best.

What a great video! I wanted to know if you guys thinned them at all or used a contrast medium with them? Do you also see these as a fun one-off paint or will it be something in your mini painting tool belt?
Dave - "I would use them long term, filling gaps on colors that require subtlety but using some contrast paints where I wanted saturation. The deep browns of cygor and hard black of black Templar. But generally the reliability and consistency of these lead to less surprises and I prefer a lot of them to contrast"

The Black seems kinda lacking, if you're trying to get true black armor or something. But the blue hue does look pretty excellent for something like a Xenomorph Tyranid color scheme. Or for NMM.
It's pretty much perfect for Yu Jing and body suit types surfaces. At least that's what I'll be using my bottle for.
I really like the look of these for the cloth bits of the models, jenns skirt and especially garreths leather coat turned out really really nice!

The game color xpress is now up in my local stores website but not in stock yet, but they put up the pictures and prices. So 3.48euros are half the price of gw contrast
Half the price? Hopefully it's as good as the Army painter, just without the water reactivation issues.
@@Bonesawisready926 check out Juan Hedalgo UA-cam channel, he was a part of the development and has some videos about it, or at least one video about it. And i have the full range of gw contrast, warcolors antíthesi, scalecolor instant potions and the greenstuffworld dipping inks, and i got half the rage of speedpaint, i dont like them much, in my opinion the speedpaint is the least good of all the lines, i do hope they will fix the issus with the reformulation they are doing, i would love it if work properly and that all the 24 old and the 66 new color will not have those issus
@@komma8203 I like the Speedpaints. For me they are the easiest to wet blend with. Makes painting my Harleys take a fraction of the time. I also have the space for an airbrush and have been varnishing all my minis for years so the reactivation isn't THAT big a deal.
I like some contrasts (Mantis Warrior Green is probably my favorite, it's perfect one coat for eye lenses) but I hate the pots and they are overpriced in my opinion.

Its only the Two Thin Coats paints that are as expenciv pr ml as far as i know. And all hobby paints are pretty good, and as long as they work for you and youre way of painting, thats all that matter, they are to much work to use in the way i paint, so i just use another brand.

I think as Juan Hidalgo also put it, these are an excellent baseline for a paint job. The black definitively need 2 coats, but with 1 coat you can darken another color without using medium..

Bold move putting it on a wet palette. 😁 Actually for me, the biggest advantage of Contrast paints is that they're NOT in a dropper bottle. I prefer those and washes to be in their own containers so I don't waste a single drop.
Whats up with using a wet pallette for contrast type paints? Seen someone else mention it but they didn't really say what the problem was.
@@caseco4979 Well the effect is almost the same as with shade type paints. There's separation and the paint doesn't necessarily like being thinned by the palette.

Without the one thick coat option, how is this different than inks + matt medium? Not that ink + matt medium isn't a useful tool, but it's so easy to do at home, that I'm not sure why to buy these as a separate product.

not a bad choice, but they do seem kind of desaturated to me. They do sort of remind me of watercolors, and they certainly have their own place in an artist's toolkit, but killing Contrast Paints, Speed Paints and the various others? yeah, no. They might get added to the toolbox, but they will not be replacing anything I already use. They just don't really... pop, you know? The colors are less vibrant than either Contrast or Speed Paint, and i just can't see them ever replacing my currently used paints. An addition to my toolbox, yes. absolutely, but not a replacement.
It is nice the strength and weaknesses of these paints. They might be fun to try them out
I am so excited for these to come out, I hope they do some new skintone sets, they tend to be my favorite, like army painters onyx color, i haven't tried it but pics look great, then hopefully they do a more bright and vivid red, a more bright turquoise, one that leans more blue, and one that leans more green, and a good blue cyan, maybe a blood for the blood gods like effect,
I just got into model painting about 6 months ago, really been loving it, I got so many sets and different paints, so far Vallejo has been my favorite, I love bright vivid color's,
also I tried citidel blood for the blood gods, that is amazing,
I tried reaper witch is great, they have a red that I love, so bright and beautiful,
huge brand is pretty great, but a lot more gel like, it mixes well with other stuff still, oh and P3, they got a perfect shade for a nes jason, witch I painted, I had such a hard time finding the right shade, and it took like a week to finally find that, and I think it is almost perfect,
there was a citidel one, and this other brand that had a skull, I forget the name, but the citidel doesn't make that color no more I don't think, an the ones left cost like 70 buck's,
and the skull one was quite high as well,
there is still some i haven't tried that I definitely want to, like scale 75, but man that price is high,
but yeah, I can't wait to try these new Vallejo paints, hopefully they are out soon,

I have been experimenting with my own set of "contrast" paints which I've made from my own recipes. It's basically a denser wash. It flows into the recesses easily but also clings to the top layer because of the acrylic medium. I have made them from inks, acrylic artist grade paint, oil painta and mica powders. Each type is slightly different and has its own application. I also use airbrush paints both with an airbrush and a brush. It has a very similar consistency to contrast paints and works just as well.
You mention them being like a wash or a glaze a couple of times, so is there anything that sets them apart from a regular wash or glaze? Because if not isn’t it a bit disingenuous to compare them with Contrast instead of regular washes and glazes?
I can say that they can go on in one heavy coat as well. I tested the velvet red and it went on fantastic. I thought it worked better than any of my gw contrast paints.
It's being compared to Contrast because Vallejo Express paints are meant to serving the same role or purpose.

They do, have a closer look at some of the effects Murray and Jazza went for.
Dave's approach was one coat on nicely pre prepared, Murray began to play with layers and so did jazza.
@@TabletopTime Yeah the finished minis at the end still had like a colored pencil level of saturation. The only one that really sang with it was that bear, but not a lot of models have so much texture. I do look forward to seeing how its used going ahead because I see it having different main uses than contrast

Nice job. May I suggest using a grey primer to better saturate the paintlayer and not use a wet palette for that type of paint to avoid the excessive pastel effect?

Are the paints supposed to be that watery? I have no experience with painting minis, but I have a few for DND that I want to paint and was wondering if I could just add water to acrylic paint to get the same consistency of this paint. Love your videos!!
No, it's not gonna do the same thing.
It's gonna either gonna just be thinned down paint, or a weird wash, depending on how much water you add in.
Wait a sec, you are testing contrast style paints from a wet palette? WTF? Vallejo doesn't recommend this do they? That will add additional water into the paint.

Does Vallejo xpress color have a similar deactivation issue seen in Army Painter Speed Paint?
They don't. I've been using the velvet red for a couple months and have had no reactivation. My first test model was just using a number 2 brush and splashing it on a primaris marine. It came out so well that I plan to do a full army when the paints make it state side.

Good positive review. I use the VGC extensively and have my eye on these coming out in the new year. Was there anything about the paints that you didn't like?
It's hard because we were mixed. Dave didn't like the black as a black, because he prefers to either use contrast style paints for rapid painting of paint normally. So if it doesn't do the job in one coat why. Murray loved the lighter pigments even on the black as it allowed control of colour through multiple layers.
@@TabletopTime I get that. If it is being marketed as a contrast competitor then it should do the same job.
I tend to use inks/washes over lighter colours for a similar effect to what Murray mentioned and it would be nice to have a one paint alternative so I can definitely see that merit. Just wondering if it would have the same saturation without TOO much work
got to be honest i dont think any of these companies will make something better then contrast, citadel has that paint on lock down

These look exactly like the Scale75 Instant Colors. Slightly weaker pigmentation, less saturated than Contrast. Would you guys say these ranges are largely interchangeable depending on which hues you want?
Mmh. Not enthused by the resulting colours, I have to say. I'd have to try them in person, but I personally don't really see what "niche" these are supposed to fill.
I made contrast paints myself, from ink and glaze medium + flow improver. The result was similar, matte finish, of course, for some it is a plus, for others a minus, it all depends on what effect we want to achieve. Of course, I used Vallejo inks and media for the mix. So I guess what can I expect, generally looking forward to the release.

So how do the new VGC paints compare to the old VGC paints, since they said the changed the formula. I'm wondering if it is as noticeable as the difference between old VGC and VMC.
I'm not that impressed with the results. It looks like the black has way too much blue and they lose a lot of the definition of the crevices as they dry. For me they are another forgettable entry into thinned ink's marketed as revolutionary tools at too high a price.

These look like they are made for multiple layers to "build up" the vibrancy and shadows instead of a one and done like contrast and speed paints...very interesting, you have my attention Mr. Vallejo.
Meh, it looks like its adjacent to scale 75 instacolour. I guess the question I have to ask is why would I switch to these, when I already have AP Speed paints for bold translucent colours, S75 Instacolour for glaze/wash paints, and contrast for bold opaques that flow nicely?
The market is crowded and vallejo, despite making great paints, isnt wowing me with these. Also the fact that their gamecolour paints are $2 more expensive per pot retail now is a harder pill to swallow.

They look more like the istant color of scale75, quite different from the contrast. Cool but they come soooo late in the market , I already own a ton of the competitor product to be interested in the whole ranhe. Still I'm a curios guy and I will try a couple of bottles
