  • Mom walks us through Grandma’s Pasta Fazool recipe, which is how most Italian-Americans say pasta and beans. Most Italians pronounce it as Pasta e Fagioli, but no matter how you say it, Pasta Fagioli is a wonderful stick-to your-rib pasta dish. Our mother shows us how to make pasta e fagioli as our grandmother cooked it. There are many variations of this pasta with beans recipe, but I’m sure you will enjoy this one. Very simple to prepare and made of only a few ingredients. Great anytime, but especially comforting on a brisk winter evening.

    Ingredients:
    • 1 lb. of spaghetti (broken up)
    • 1 lb. of ditalini pasta
    • 2 cans 14 oz. cans of cannellini beans
    • 5 fresh basil leaves
    • 2 cups of chopped celery with leaves
    • 4 cloves of garlic (minced)
    • 2 28-oz. cans of plum imported plum tomato (purred)
    • ¼ cup of olive oil
    • ½ cup of grated parmesan cheese
    • 1 TBSP of butter
    • Salt and pepper to taste
    • 2 cups of reserved pasta water
    Directions:
    1. First, cut up all your veggies.
    2. In a large pan on med-high heat add the olive oil and celery (cook for 3 minutes).
    3. Add minced garlic and cook for 2 more minutes.
    4. Add fresh basil and pureed tomato.
    5. Add 2 tsp. of salt, ½ tsp. of black pepper and ½ tsp. of dried oregano.
    6. Add 1 TBSP of butter
    7. Cook sauce for 30 minutes, frequently stirring.
    8. Cook pasta per package instructions (al Dente)
    9. Before pasta is cooked reserve 2 cups of pasta water.
    10. Once pasta is cooked, drain, and then add sauce and pasta water into the pot.
    11. Stir in sauce and let cook for 2 minutes.
    12. Enjoy!

Yes, an authentic Italian American version of pasta fazool ! I'm amazed that many people think they're eating pasta fazool from that famous chain restaurant when all they're eating is some weird chili concoction. Your mom's is the real deal BB guys and miss seeing her in your new videos.

Your mom makes me think of mine and those Mama's and Nona's in Astoria who used to love me because I had a 6'4" frame challenging them to fill it up! Not only did they fill me up, but they also taught me how to make the dishes. By 14, I was an early team member for Holiday feasts. First, I'd peel all the potatoes and chop the celery and onions at home, then I was on Slice and Chop duty at my friends' houses. I loved helping with the fish on Christmas eve. Often, since they knew my "Nanny" was a great cook, they'd send a dish from their home to ours as a thanks for my help. Then I'd always bring a surprise from our German kitchen for their dinner. This reminds me of those days when we made a community by working together and sharing our food and culture with wonderful people. Plus, we gained an appreciation of good, different, and GARLIC! And Cherry Peppers, too!

Growing up in Brooklyn, my Italian neighbor used to always tease me by saying, "I'm going to make some pasta fazool." Funny thing, she never made it, despite mastering an abundance of Italian recipes. I always thought pasta fazool was some type of mystery. LOL.

I do the same with either pancetta or guanciale to add a meat flavor to the base. I also puree a can of beans to thicken and use a little less pasta. A great “cold weather” dish.

I thought it was funny adding the spaghetti in with the ditalini,, that would have been done during the depression, or just hard times, when moms would use whatever they had !!! If you didn't have enough ditalini,,no problem, add some spaghetti !!!

...so glad I stumbled on your YT channel. The cooking is spot on, as my grandmothers, aunts, and mother prepared these recipes just like or very very similar to the way youse guys do the cooking.
My grandmother made a dish using chicken & stock , escarole, fresh grated parmesan cheese, she also did a dish using white clam sauce , spaghetti and broccoli. Do either of these ring any bells? I live in south Texas, 40+ years now; my family lived in White Plains, Rye, Bronx, Brooklyn Queens by way of Naples and Sicily. Anyway guys, what a treat for my ears and eyes!
