Hey I just had a quick question after watching this playlist. For my pebble dashing can I just follow this video for the scratch coat where I just do the one layer of plaster or do I have to follow the whole playlist and do another layer to straighten and then follow the float finish sand render smooth. Or can I just follow this video with Only one scratch layer for the first layer (just one layer no need to plaster over and follow all the videos in this playlist) and then wait a day and then do the 4-1 top layer with the white cement mix and dash the pebbles on?
Yes mater this is the same 1st coat / scratch coat for both smoth render or a dash finish render only a wet dash would have another coat called a brown coat
Hi Mac thanks for your great videos I just subscribed. Can I ask you a question about the type of sand to use for rendering. Is building sand finer than rendering sand? I am based in Devon and a lot of builders merchants seem to call the plastering sand 50/50 Which I believe is half sharp and half fine sand and washed. Do you think that would be the same as what they call plastering sand? Thanks again Chris.
Hi Chris mate appreciate the support means the world to me, it dose sound possible that its half building and sharp here there is a builders that sell wht they ca plastering sand but its very gritty indeed its ok to use but if you go to thin of a coat it can be a nightmare with the grits and it drying quick if i was you I would test a small amount of it 1st see how you get on mate
@@macplastering Thanks for your reply much appreciated, yes the 50/50 sand is quite gritty here too and they call it plastering sand!! I think I will just get the fine yellow building sand as I want to get a nice smooth Finnish. Maybe I could use the 50/50 as a scratch coat to leave a bit more of a key for the top coat which can be done in the fine builders sand? Thanks again Mac :)
@@Chris-uu6dg Only thing is finishing with building sand can be tricky also again if at all possible do a small area for a test 1st , building sand tends to slump on walls and whne finished and dried out cracks much more than plastering sand would due to it's fine grains and acts more like clay , if you think of mud that has dried out in the sun thats the kind of way it cracks and sometimes you'll only see them when its wet yes this can happen to both sands but much more on building sand the sand i use is gritty but it is then best for plastering , I will have to try do a video to show examples of this ,but for sure if you can test some before you do anything big is the best way
@@macplastering Hi Mac, thank you so much for taking the time to reply really good of you mate!! one last quick question . Iv completed a scratch coat to the back of the house it went on well but in a few spots i didnt get a very deep scratch because it dried a bit on me . i was woundering if i could add a bit more grip to it, maybe throw a bit of a light scud mix onto it in those spots.
@@jimmyc9925 a scud on it sounds like t would help as long as its a weaker mix than your scratch coat and stronger than the top coat if this makes sense mate mabe get a little sbr in the mix to , is there a way to score it with a grinder or would that be to dangerous and difficult? Sound man any support the charity's get is great as them like most places are going to struggle with there being no events going on to raise funds
@@macplastering sound thanks . the scratch was a 4:1. What effect would a light 2:1 scud have on the finish coat or would it conflict more with the scratch coat its going onto? I can always go with a 4.5:1 if thats the best.
Once again thanks for everything.
@@jimmyc9925 Was always taught if you go stronger over the top it will blow off and have seen it on jobs I have stripped of that t just shells of top layer, the sbr in the mix or on the wall might cancel it out but it being stronger it still might crack on you mate is it a big area ?
Hi mate can you scratch and finish in one day?
Hey buddy , I would always prefer to leave mine at least a day before gong over again , but to answer you it can be done but I wouldn't relay recommended it
@@macplastering cheers mate
@@jamietalbot7254 Any time buddy :)
Just adding a bit of input if that's ok as far as I know you can do k-rend finetex scratch back in a 2 coat pass on the same day onto block work as in finished the same day I will try and find out more on this but I agree with mac sand/cement render is 1st coat then next day or longer 3nd coat👍👍👍👍
@@onpointplastering Oh yes k rend and webber , the monocouche renders can be done same day and also you might need accelerators but they need to be measured perfect as they can discolour it so to be safe you need to add the same amount every time
Cant wait to see the finish m8 nice1 👍
cheers mate might have to do the straightening and then the finishing as it will be a real long one .... what you recon mate a long one or 2 shorter ?
@@macplastering it's hard to say but a longer 1 might give people a better idea of how the process goes but it might end up to long a tricky 1 that
@@onpointplastering i cant make a call on it myself at all LOL
Is there no dpc ?
doubt it on this garage was a diy build and they left the back and side out (rendering wise) when it was all first done not sure if you can see but the sides didn't put no base or plinth in and again the back is higher than the inside and the fronts level as its a garage I suppose that makes sense if you want to drive a car in. could be some dpc in but not 100% mate
Again when is comes to the under coat the scratch coat it would be done this way mate only after would you add a plinth or base but yes you could bed the stop bead in at this stage
It’s Autum still warm last Thursday it was 37c nine months is great winter can be cold central heating is not needed stay safe Trev
thats good they say 27 28 kills this virus so hope it dose and it would make it very hard for it to spread where you are my friend :)
hi guys just seeing if i can put k rend over the top of cement scratch coat many thanks
Hi mate we done it years ago loads and was told to do it that way then they changed and wanted it just straight k rend and said they wont stand over it if it was on sand and cement have drove past the ones done about 16 years ago this way and they are still on was a big site I figure they wanted to just sell more of there own product but then again if it fails its on you best to do it there way and then again if it fails they probs still say it was the way it was done
@@macplastering hi mate ok cool coz the bass coad primer expensive so i will do a sand and cement scratch coat first thank for your help
@@rclink1866 I have a k rend demo mate it can be done in 2 coats straight onto block without needing any undercoats
@@macplasteringhi mate i need to go over breeze block would i still need a sand and cement scratch coat

Thank bro hope your doing well mate
Do you not scud the wall no?
hi Patrick mate hope your well, I only do it if necessary but mind you would loved to got another day outa it :) have an old block wall coming up its going to get the full works and have time to record it all :)
Is it a pure cement or mix with sand I'm a beginer
Hi Tata temyoung no its cement and sand I show how i mix it here - ua-cam.com/video/Tsw-t8mwLRI/v-deo.html
Hope you subscribe for more :)
Wavy lines, lateral and vertical pull will have resistance. Straight scratch lines are prone to cracking on lateral pull.
Might do a video on the very subject thanks for watching
Hey mac why don't you use aluminium edge to smooth out the plaster ? It would be absolute flat like a mirror. 😁👍.
Oh yes it would for sure :) In the next few videos I will be putting up I show how i get it as smooth as sand and cement can be

Why corner beads that rust, do the aris the proper traditional way off the stick.
Hi Pat mate I do prefer the old way for sure what do you think of the pvc beads? I did use a bead at the far side as was not able to nail on a rule/timber
Good vid
Thanks Mark man appreciate the support :):)
Good enjoyable vid, but you never stated the ratio, sand to cement xxxxxxx
Hi John thanks for the comment and glad its good to watch thank you , yes sorry the ratios was in a previous video I think i got them in a playlist in channel but will drop you the link to the mixing vid - ua-cam.com/video/Tsw-t8mwLRI/v-deo.html

starting at wrong side of the wall
Dont be that guy just because you do it diffrent dont mean im wrong or you are wrong besides you dont know i could be left handed LOL
wrong side and inside-out haha all about the end result and if it is there years later
think Mac has this in the bag
@@phillymartine5849 Thanks Philly LOL inside out upside down round the wrong way LOL Yes but I think the guy was just taught diffrent there is 100% no difference its all about comfort and what works for the individual
How is been lock down going. We are not on lock down the only thing open are take away liquor stores supermarkets
Hi Trevor buddy we are doing ok not much open but like of Tesco and food shops where are you in the world mate ?
A bit of the plumbers crack going on
I relay need to get that tattoo sorted saying subscribe for when that happens LOL hahah thanks for watching mate :)
your right handed sir you find you will drop less if you work in to your work
i find i dont drop much to be honest buddy and i been working at it long enough to know what is more comfortable witch is also where you wont drop much at all, But keep doing what is working for you
Just look at the floor after the whole wall is on very little on it so starting left or right is not important simply you have been taught that way mate
Hi mr mac following ur videos 4 or 5 years now not impressed with this 1' no scudding 2 mixing mortar plasterciser to scratchcoat ( not for external use in ireland creates hollow pockets reacts to cement bad job) should be edgeing your scratchcoat for flat sharpe finishing
Hey thanks for watching for 5 years shame your 1st comment is this one a negative every one dose render diffrent for sure and I have to this day had no problems with mine but thanks for your input , I would rarely scud decent block , but yes if I could get another days pay for every singe job i done why not haha but life is not just a black and white picture I am sure you know , you dont like the finish I done on this one? as it is the very next video ? hope my fellow country man will stay in touch and follow us for another 5 years :)
Lol....now you're just showing off!
Thanks for watching the showing of will be on another video LOL
Should always rule off scratch coat
Not at all
I would only ever rule it off if it was bad shape in all honesty but hey wouldn't harm any
absolutely no need at all. Anyone any good can put it on even enough without the need to rule it.
Nice informative video liked keep up the good work and feel free to check out my latest video and thx plus sorry for the disturbance and inactivity 🙏🏼
Thanks bro :)
Did you go to some kind of college or courses to learn that or you just came to a building site to work as a labourer and learnt that on the go?
I did go to a college yes but you learn best on site working and learning on the go
My eyes hurt
why is that ?
This is a waist of time .In SA that wall must take us 2 hours
Not sure what SA means but its only wasting your time as you know how to plaster witch is also a waste of time your watching plastering videos if you all ready know how ?
