    What an amazing transformation from loose stone walls to a nicely finished smooth
    usable basement ! You two are awesome in doing this hard work as a team and never giving up. Once you finish both the bottom floor and the floor over the iron beam you will have a perfect cool place to store your vegetable and fruit harvests. Hard to believe this desirable space was once filled with soil,ruble and trash before you worked hard to redo it. I've been around for over 80 years and have rarely seen any people your age with so much knowledge and ambition. Bravo !👍👍👍🤩🤩🤩❤

    Love the hand prints. I’ve watched a few vlogs on older properties and most lean towards lime render for breath ability even in damp areas to prevent mouldy patches. If you find your walls get damp patches after using cement render then you might consider removing it and using lime instead. Painful job but possibly worth doing for health reasons. But hope this works for you. Others often do the French drain options on the exterior sections which may be tricky too.

    Grandma referred to her room like this as her root cellar. It was where she stored her potatoes, turnips, carrots, sauerkraut and all her home canned fruits and veggies. Good luck and enjoy!

      I thought the same, old stone building need sand and lime .Although it looks ok I wouldn't be surprised if it starts leaking in water. Hopefully not but time will tell

      This is exactly what I'm trying to find out. I've a much bigger basement that has the same walls and leaking water and slowly allowing sandy soil to leak in as well. Have little money or resources so hoping to find a way to improve my very damp home. In a decade the water table went from being dry to lots of flooding around my property. So... It's impossible to trench out all around the outside. Likely cause collapse is my fear, even if I could afford that option

    Hi,
    I am surprised you used cement to "point" and render the walls. Several UA-cam channels featuring renovations in Portugal and Italy talk about stone walls needing to "breathe" and that lime mortar allows this while cement does not.
    Maybe there might be different building practices between Latvia and Portugal, or that you are working below ground already. or adding the damp proof solution will help you solve this.
    Good luck!

    • @Steve.M
      @Steve.M Рік тому

      I think, because they’re below ground level already, that breathable lime is not what they need here. Essentially, they’re building a swimming pool, but with the water on the other side.

Because you really do seem to possess a very good artistic talent ❤ and you might be very good at creating decorative pieces 😉🧩 maybe even learning the art of working with Clay. It's only a suggestion but I do have a way of expressing yourself that has a great artistic flair that you might want to explore. Congratulations on any of the progress that you have made over the past year.

    The basement is really looking good how y’all are doing it. I sure hope you don’t have any problems with it. It’s gonna be great to be able to store food down there. The solar bank will come in real handy. Especially if your electric goes out you can keep your fridge and important other things plugged into it. So it’s good to always keep it charged up. Plus they are great to take camping in case there’s no electricity wherever you go.

    Hand prints are perfect 🤗 keeping water out is a real concern….I live in Uk in flats built in 1971 on the ground floor and over the last 2 years we have noticed problems with the hallway floor 😳 yep rising damp/water we will find out more on the 20th when the inspector comes out ..fingers crossed it will be sorted soon.
    Maybe you guys could sort it out faster 🤣.. take care xx

I would Only use hydralic lime, as it's breathable.. i wonder how this will work for your climate.. might be fine... I would only use lime and try and figure out the moitstur problems.. Maybe from exterior ...
