Found a Cheap Bamboo Pen to Draw With

- That bamboo pen was less than USD $2. There was another one, Japanese made, that was USD $9. I bought the cheaper one as I really can't see the difference. I'll get the other one to compare in the future.

I like your video. I was looking to see if anyone else was doing any art with these. I made my own bamboo pens with bamboo purchased at the garden center. I cut it with a box knife and made different width nibs. I love the marks they make. So much more interesting marks than technical pens. Even mistakes look beautiful. I look forward to your comparison videos with other pens you buy.

Hey Teoh you brought me to nostalgia. when we were kids, we used to write with this Bamboo Pen before turning to ink pens. the sound of pen on page and its look is exactly that i experienced when i was small kid in school. The teacher used to help us and we used to sit in sun in winter. I m missing it already. gonna try this soon.

Looks like a great pen for drawing landscapes and adding textures and loose details in trees, flowers and mountains.
Hahaha I know someone who uses and old clothes peg (from laundry)..he sharpened it up and uses it to sketch
These bamboo pens are often used for latin or arabic calligraphy. Snipping the tip at an angle allows you to create the thin/thick lines of the letters.
Cool demonstration. I have one of these a friend gave me. But have never used it before. Will have to give it a try!

That looked like fun. I watched a Sketchbook Skool video once and the woman used a tree twig sharpened to a point as a dip pen. I checked Amazon for bamboo pens and found a set of three from Jack Richeson and another set of three from Loew-Cornell. There were others; but, I didn't find one like the one you used in your video.
Made such a pen myself. You can improve it by making an ink reservoir for it by cutting a thin strip of aluminium from a beer can, give it a shallow S shape, and put it in the hole of the bamboo, so that the end sits just above the tip of the pen. It will last way longer between dipping.
One of my favorite paintings is a pen and ink of fat puppies playing. Your video makes me think that it may have been done with a bamboo pen. Thank you! I am adding one to my shopping list:-)

I used bamboo pens to do some manga back about a decade ago and I liked them just fine. The natural feel of the bamboo was really nice. I have not attempted with watercolor though. Edited for bad grammar or my more gooder English =)
You are very natural. I see that the quality and the cost of pen does not matter for such amazing talent. Btw these bamboo pens are just for casual sketching i think.

This was a really interesting demo. You got a lot more control than I would have thought possible with that pen and it is really interesting how you manage to get the textural effects with the bamboo pen. I have 2 friends who use wooden coffee stirrers that they trim down with a knife and dip into India ink. Their results are surprising good, I think because of how they trim the stirrers and because when the India ink dries on the tips, it makes the tips stop sucking up the ink. The great part is that the coffee stirrers are so readily available in coffee shops!

Thank you for your video! I just bought myself a bamboo pen, and from what you described and showed, it's exactly what I was hoping for. I have been making my own feather quills, from feathers I find in park, but they sometimes break when using them on my 100% cotton rag paper / rough papers. I am not detail oriented, and I enjoy the 'mistakes' that can sometimes happen when using tools that are not precise. Your drawing style is beautiful... I hope to get results nearly as good as you.
You have done a nice job with the pen Teoh but I tried one a while ago and decided it required too much patience and had to keep dipping it in the ink. Ughhh, drove me nuts - prefer my fountain pen. You certainly are an experimental fellow. Good for you.

Great video Teoh! bamboo pens are an "old school" technique and as I saw in your video it would be fun to draw with that kind of pen, long time ago here in youtube I found a video where someone teach how to make this bamboo pens for your own, I hope it still be there : )

Arabic calligraphy uses primarily bamboo sticks, and there is a specific way to shave them called "Cutt", sounds familiar!.. It's much better in terms of control and economy to soak silk threads or any absorbant material with ink and load fom that, instead of directly from the bottle.. I guess KK uses that with his twigs.. Thanks fof the video..keep experimenting.

@@teohyc Google "Arabic calligraphy" or "Persian calligraphy". 99% of them are made with bamboo pen. (I am a calligrapher so I know). Also, you used the wrong paper for this pen. You need a very, very glossy paper and you are supposed to drop off excess ink before putting pen to paper. And you are wrong that one can't be detailed with this pen, but you cannot be blamed for not knowing what it is capable of since you haven't been trained in the art. You do need to chop off the nib at the angle of 32 to 35 degrees with a knife.

$3 for this! Its a lot!! Plus the Quality is moderately bad.
Also, yeah it disperses much ink at 1st. Eventually youll learn to control the consistency of ink using pressure variation.

Teoh, I've tried a bamboo pen before but it isn't for me. Here in Florida, bamboo does grow and considered invasive. I suppose one can make their own pen. you do well with it and thank you for showing us.
Maybe that's a good pen to help keep the drawing loose!

This was very interesting. ^_^ Bamboo pens in general are very interesting. Seems you can get them in various different tip sizes and different designs of tip to hold the ink. There are even bamboo pens with a brush on the opposite side. You can buy them on Amazon and there are people on the internet that will make them for you. Pretty cool all of this. Thanks for another great review.

Thank you Teoh, I actually made one myself just now after your video and it might actually work even better than yours. I cut the width down to half a millimeter, so it creates a lovely fine line and not too much ink at once. Thanks for inspiring me to create my own pen!
+Charlotte Dincher Did you use a twig or bamboo? I remembered my friend saying that the twig/bamboo need to be dried properly before using. I can't remember the reason why though.
Funnily enough I am looking at a plant that I stuck a bamboo pole from the builders market in for support, so it was easy... It is fully dried. I suspect if it is not dry it will shrink, leaving too large a gap for the ink. And the sap might end up on the paper.
I never tried bamboo before!I guess it's similar to using a goose feather. Nice demonstration as usual
