In this video, I replace my rear hatch lift struts with some stronger ones to prevent sagging. This happens when the struts get old or if you add additional weight like I did.

I’ve been putting off doing mine for a long time now, looks like I’m going to have to change them out now thanks man 👌🏼
Glad I could motivate you! Haha
Great video! My hatch has been getting a little saggy and I was just thinking the other day that I should look into doing this. Thanks for the information.
No problem!!
Thanks so much for the time you spend making these videos. Im a college student buying my first 3rd gen in a couple days. Super excited to start working towards the overland build I have always wanted. Your channel has calmed a lot of the nerves I have been having about the difficulty of this project. Keep it up.
Take your time. Slow and steady and build as you go. Don’t forget to enjoy along the way
Good morning Bro @Phorunner Channel
Hello!
love your videos man.
Thanks bud!
@@PhoRunner love u
Good tutorial
Thanks
been putting mine off for a few years thinking id need to buy new spacers and such, ordered these and everything worked perfect, thanks man, hoping to see a new video soon.
I have been putting this off... I just ordered a set so I guess I'll be putting them on late this week.
Quick and easy job! Just don’t lose the c clip
Thanks, I needed that. The struts on my 2000 are tired, especially in the cold.
Thank you, My 97 is fine in the summer, but when it's cold it's a battle to keep it opened. Just ordered the replacements from Amazon. OK, just installed them. Work better than the originals. What I need is a source for the Rubber Washers at the top. Mine have fallen apart after 27 years.
Glad I could help. I got 2 part numbers in my description depending on weight
THANK YOU for showing yourself doing all steps including actually removing the pins. Thats the part in the installation where I stopped to search a video cause those damn things were stuck in there solid and I felt like I was maybe causing damage banging on them to get them out, plus showing how you pull the strut out top side first
Glad I could help you !
I put these on my 01 runner in march 2021 they are holding up fine. I used the exact strong arm model. Had to get some nylon washers from the parts store and cut them to fit after that all good. I also lost a c-clip after they went flying and had to get replacements. 👍
Lol nice
Does anyone have links to replace the bushings, washers and c-clips? I started this project but the top bushing cracked. If I find replacement parts, I'll add links. The struts don't come with replacement bushings, washers or c-clips.
Excellence…. As always.
Thanks!
I've got the Gobi ladder as well, plus a fire extinguisher attached to the ladder, so I think I'll need a bit more lift support, and I'll order the 6815
Thanks for the great video!
Let me know how they work out for you!
Thanks for all the great advice and how-tos with your 4runner. I plan to replace my rear door lift struts, lower ball joint, and give it a 2-inch lift because of your informative videos. What project or trip with your 4runner or other vehicle do you have planned next?
Just camping and beaches and small trails around here (I don’t really like trails lol)
Hey bud! Thanks a lot for your great videos, I wonder if theres a way to replace the black type of rubber that is outside at the edge of the window frame, ive seen weatherstrip videos but i never see that black thing around the rear back windows on my 3rd gen, thanks!
Do these work in the cold been getting tons of cold weather in az for the last 3 years
Let’s go!
Where we going poke hitter haha
Thank you subscribed
what type of wheels does he have ?
I didn’t have a buddy or a 2x4 to do this job and unfortunately while taking out the strut the rear hatch came down and just slightly broke the rear tail light. I placed some Gorilla tape over the crack and its all good.
Yikes sorry to hear that!! I had some incidents also lol. See my blooper at the end haha
I been looking for Lift struts that have higher strength and higher pressure so the door opens faster them style will hold the extra weight
These will do if you don’t have a ladder! Otherwise it seems fine/normal with that ladder back there
@@PhoRunner good feedback
Stongarm +30 pound Ladder Link I'm description is missing bro
Just curious what year your 3rd Gen is. I just inherited my moms 1998 SR5, and its liftgate shocks are going bad so I need to order some new ones. Thanks for the video and link!
Mine is 1999
where did you get the rear radio antenna mount from?
Nice video, hey brother are you out of Fresno, CA?
Yes I am
I have a 3d gen 4Runner looking for a shop to install a lift. Any recommendations suggestions?
*Fresno/Clovis area
Northside 4x4 or timberline offroad
Awesome video man, I would love to volunteer my 4Runner in a video if you want to post up a tutorial? I’m in Fresno and ideas for the truck.
Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of free time these days so I stop taking on extra jobs
@@PhoRunner no worries, thanks for the response!
I do answer questions hehe
Help with getting a new bushing for the top. Any idea on part number / what it's called? Thanks
I’m not sure but some folks just use some plastic washer insert type thing.
I recently installed a bilstein 5100 lift kit to my 99 Runner w ome 883 in front and 861 springs in back. I noticed some rake and front is sagging sort of. I want to get rid of some of that rake. What would you recommend on doing so the front and rear look a bit more level?
Is this 4Runner have Virginia tags ? If so I seen this coming through the Baltimore tunnel about 2 years ago and made me build mine it’s a 2000 3.4 5vzfe lifted 5 inches on 33 inch Mickey Thompson tires
I’m from Cali
Update for you guys. It's now colder and these rear struts weren't holding the weight of the ladder!
If you have a rear ladder, use Strong Arm 6815 instead. It will provide enough power to lift your ladder. Do not buy 6815 for stock hatch as it'll be hard to close.

I have them on my 4runner now and they work great!
Hi sir,
My 4ruuner 2001 dashboard shows VSC Off, Trac Off and ABS , what could be the reason?
Abs sensor probably
Hey if i went with Bilstien 5100's would I be able to clear 32's without rubbing and regearing? thanks so much
I don’t see why not haha
@@PhoRunner ok sweet, I’m making a spreadsheet and trying to plan out my whole build and really making sure I’m doing it right, I want big enough tires where I get decent clearance and still can fit a spare, it’s my daily driver and Off roading vehicle as well so trying to go with a happy medium
Hi,Sir may I have your mail for led car lights sponsor cooperation?
yall can pick up these supports from rock auto for $13 a piece
Nice! link it!!
Cuz my does that. Im buying these now. 98 4runner
Back in the day I had these with no ladder and it was so hard to close for my wife haha. I had to call strong arm and they gave me one lift strut to replace on one side and it was better. That’s why I only had to replace one in this video ;)
