I had a problem with two cables at the same time . I contacted a Starcraft dealer and they sent me a set of cable replacement instructions that cable with wiring diagrams . It was very nice of them ..
Considered buying an old pop up like this one really cheap and trying to fix cables( I know NOTHING , son in law a tiny bit). After watching this, ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Glad I saw this before I threw money away!! Seems ALOT of work and know how
I have a question it’s not about what your talking about bought i just bought a 1988 starcraft camper and it’s missing the crank to rise it do you know where I can get one from or anyway you can send me a picture of how it looks
I have a 1983 StarCraft popup. I am trying to replace the cables underneath the trailer. Should the camper be completely down when I do this? Can I and should I take the winch off or leave it on when I hook up the cables. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I would have the camper completely down which will leave the least amount of cable wrapped. The 85’ I did had (2) main cables running off the spool front and rear and then they had a T connection to the corners. With that setup it was easier just to remove the winch allowing for accurate length estimates and it was easier to start the new cable on to the spool. I would tie the front and rear corner lift cables together with a bungee cord or something just to keep tension on them while working on the main just so that the don’t roll off the inner pulleys because of the slack. Good luck 👍
@@Artisticmetals I'm just wondering right now I've got the winch turned all the way to the bottom and I've got the top braced do you think I still need to lower the whole unit
@@jimpappas4244 As long as it is braced well I think you could back the tension off and replace the cables with the roof elevated. Are you replacing all of the bottom cables or just the main ones on the winch spool?
@@Artisticmetals just the ones on the winch spool. Just trying to figure out how to make the tension right. I ordered the factory cables, so the length should be right
Not newbie to having a pop up, but I haven't had one for several years and have a new to me 1987 Meteor and the back cable and pulleys look rusty but the right rear is somewhat frayed on the loop, so I would like to change the rear cables and probably the pulleys. I am cleaning up some rust and caked on dirt underneath the rear then I'm going to lubricate them with silicone spray liquid wrench and crank it up. The front looks good and the trailer is in quite good shape otherwise for its age. I have some dry lithium grease spray to put on the rear winch, except I read not to put it on the braking part! My question is if that bad, one or two strand frayed cable doesn't break on me do I have to have the roof up to change the cable? Do I just lower the roof a tad and put a bit of slack on the cables and go from there, or do I'll leave it fully extended and put a brace in that is as the roof height? I cannot find the roof height in the 1997 manual for the Meteorite model, or my one side only bed extension Meteor. I do have the instructions on changing the cable though. Just looking for some inside tips as I have never attempted something like this before. Thank you for your great video! Hope this question isn't too blatantly blind. I guess I also have to remove the winch plate to insert the new cable as well.
@@Artisticmetals yes the bottom cables that run side to side where the rear winch is. The front horizontal ones are okay and there is very little rust there at all. The previous owner must have had the back of the pup parked in a wetter area more prone to surface rust I'm guessing? I probably have to change those back two rivet pulleys. There are instructions in the manual, but I'm not too clear on the entire procedure yet after the removal. The part they show to replace looks like it is just for a pulley replacement in the bracket with a screw through it? I think Canvas Replacements and Pop up parts sell replacement cables I will have to call and inquire as to replacement parts for those two brackets and/or pulleys as I don't see them on their website only the other ones that go in the lifter arms.
@@shelleyw5951 Sounds like your system is setup a little different than this one. But I would definitely replace any frayed or rusty cables according to the manual. My horizontal cables are larger than the verticals and are pretty easy to replace. The last thing you want is to have a cable fail while camping.

Finally, someone shows the lift mechanism for these tent trailers. Thanks!
Really needed all this information. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!!
What was your length from the winch part to the front cable that comes down?
Super helpful video!! Thank you!!

You can find them on eBay just search for StarCraft crank handle and it should pull one up. It’s not letting me post a picture on the reply.
