Thanks for this! It answered a lot of my questions. I would love to see a series on annual PM stuff we should be doing (ie. Greasing wheel bearings, lubricating the bed rails, PMing the wiffle tree and drive shaft of the roof system etc.). Also, I have a Somerset E3. Would love to see some content for those if able. Hello! Amazing video thanks for explaining everything so clearly for a total newb! I think I have this same exact trailer, a 2003 Coleman Laramie. Our two ceiling lights stopped working when we’re just using the DC battery, but they work when plugged in the home. But we think the battery is good because the carbon monoxide light and the small light switch for the storage area works on DC only. We checked the fuses and the kill switch works. Any ideas of things for us to try? Thank you!!
Hmmmm. That’s a good one. Led bulbs perhaps? If so check your battery for 12 volts. Some leds can be power level temperamental.
Great video. How efficient is the converter in charging the battery? We'll be boondocking for 4 nights, but will have a generator to plug into, but only want to do so to keep the battery charged. If the battery gets down to 12.4 volts, for example, would being plugged into the generator 30 amp connector charge it back to 12.7 in an hour? 2 hours? There are probably parts of the equation I'm leaving out, but looking for an approximation. BTW... that looked a lot like our '02 Santa Fe!
Hello Paul! The converter will provide a charge back to the battery when it's plugged in. To check the efficiency of the output, you can test the voltage being supplied to the battery while charging with a multi meter. Just put the tester on the 12V scale, and check the battery terminals. A 24DC battery has 80 amp hours when fully charged. One or two hours will typically top a healthy battery back off if it is just a few volts down.
New to pop-up campers. Thanks for a good overview. I had a quick question maybe you could help with. My 12v system seems to be fluctuating power. Plugged into shore power via 15 amp adapter at home. Lights fluctuate between bright and dim every 20-30s. Any thoughts?
Sounds like you may be in need of a new converter. Check the grounds first,a faulty ground can cause issues like this to.
Our 94 coleman has an added AC on top. It has its own power cord 15 amp it looks like . So I can plug this into camp site power box? Then plug main power cord into power box as well right ?
Take a second look at the AC plug. If it has the T shape, then it’s a 20 amp plug end. If not than yes, but it is not common.
Hello... Just ran into your video.. Great info.. My question is I have a 1993 Coleman Destiny/Cedar pop up and would like to know if it's equip with hook ups for a battery? We've ever only used to power through a generator. How would I know if it's wired for battery use? Please help..
It was from the factory. At the tongue you should find a black and white 12 wire for battery hookup.
VERY new to camper camping, and I appreciate your videos. Did I understand correctly that the battery system will not run any outlets?

Thanks for the excellent video. I have a question on operating my Atwood 7916-ii furnace. It operates as expected when plugged into an AC outlet. When on 12V battery the fan runs although does not appear to be fast enough to close the sail switch and therefore will not ignite. I've inspected and cleaned the sail switch. Any thoughts appreciated. The 12V battery was charged and measured ~12.5V.
That's a good one John! So you are finding 12.5 at the battery. How about at the furnace? Still 12.5 here? If so I would then suspect that the control board for the furnace is at fault. I hope this is helpful!

Thanks for the video! We just inherited a pop up and a few things have been removed from inside, mainly the sink and the heater no longer works. We have a refrigerator, the lights, and a removable ac unit. If we only plan to use the camper at plllugin campsites, do we even need to bring the battery? Will the lights, plugs, ac, and refrigerator work once we plugin at the site without the battery? Thanks!
They will, but the battery acts as a filter for the 12 volt system and is recommended

Derek for the win - again! Here's my dilemma. Boodocking. 2009 Fleetwood E3. New Interstate 27DC (600mca). The only system running is heater. (lights off, h2o off, fridge off) Heater cycles 3x without firing; needs to be reset. four times we go through this and finally it lights and blows for an hour, with strong fan. when it turns off, the CO2 detector chirps and the battery indicator shows weak. How can this be? My thought is the battery lead connections need dielectric grease or new 40amp breaker.
Check the voltage at the battery with a multimeter. You should read 12.4 V with nothing pulling.
Now plug the camper in to 15 or 30 amp service and check the terminals again. Plugged in you should have about 13.4 V. I hope this is helpful and if you need more help please give me a call at the shop!
Does one need a power converter in order to run DC and AC power while using a power distribution box that already has a battery charger?
As long as it distributes the AC power and charges the 12 volt side your good!
My solar panel's run my A/C fine. @400watts a panel works great

110 is only when plugged in. The battery just powers the 12 volt equipment.

Hi Derrick, 1st I want to thank you for all of your educational how to videos. I know how hard you work to put all of them together for us Coleman pop up camper owners. They have saved me many times. I hope you can help me out with an electrical question I have. The exterior outlet on my 2003 Coleman Carmel hasn't worked since I bought it used. The step light works and the porch light works. I'm hooked up to my house shore power. All outlets and lights work inside. I've checked fuses and they're good. I have 2 breakers and they work fine. None of my outlets have a reset button. I tested the outside outlet with a small FM radio and it doesn't have power. The radio works fine off the inside outlet. What would you recommend I should look for so my outside outlet will work? Thank you!
I would take it out and check the connections first. Maybe a loose wire. If they were all tight, then replace the outlet.

I also found out that there's no power on the outlet where the fridge plugs in. I'm thinking that's related somehow. I did however get the fridge to work off the battery. That's a plus. Question, is it safe to unplug the fridge from the outlet and then plug it directly into an extension cord to the house? Thanks again for your help!!! I'm not going to keep bugging you with this as I'll eventuall get it figured out. I'm just thinking that you with all your knowledge and experience working on pop ups that you may have run into an issue like this before. Thanks again, Dave

I have a 99 Coleman Bayside. Water heater was removed and fridge switched for 120V. Does it matter if I go with a 15 or 40amp battery circuit breaker? I need to replace the harness.
With two less 12 volt appliances, you can drop to a 15 amp breaker.
So, I plug the AC into the camper (in the t-shaped) outlet, and then I use the converter to plug the trailer in my household plug. I usually run my AC while I'm working on it (I live in las vegas!) So doing that will damage the AC unit?!
Unless you have 30 amps in that outlet, it is not recommended. 20 amps would be the bare minimum.
You can burn your plugs, damage or melt something inside your converter, and/or damage your ac unit. I know from experience. If you decide to use an adapter that is for plugging in a 30( or 20 ) amp to a household outlet, be sure that you use the ac, with its cord, on a separate circuit than the camper power (lights, etc..)
I have a small pop up camper with only 2 dome lamps and 2 outlets. No built in heat or ac or water pump or anything fancy. It’s been in the family a while and we have never had a battery hooked up, always used shore power line either to pole or a generator. I recently purchased solar panels and an inverter and was curious if anyone had used the shore power line plugged into the inverter hooked to a battery charged with solar. Sounds like it should work to me.
Hmmm. Your lights are already 12 volt so your covered with this item with the battery. If you need a 15 amp outlet while camping , you might want to consider an inverter that you can run from your tow vehicle. Depending on your amp requirements, your solar array and required batteries could get very large very quickly with the technology available today in 2020.
Pop up camper pro thanks for the reply, so I suppose some more info may help, there is an inverter in the pop up, it is supposed to have a place to hook in battery but the leads have been removed it appears. No adapter sticking out toward the front for battery and only 1 receiving end adapter inside the under seat compartment by the inverter and shore power line but no leads to hook on to a battery post.
So in preparation for a week long hunting trip and no access to shore power and not wanting to bring a generator and smell like gas I went with 100w solar panel kit and also bought a 750w inverter. And I have a marine deep cycle I’m taking from my boat, Now there won’t be any significant draw on the system lights for getting ready in the dark morning and lights at night when needed. Maybe a small fan to circulate air. And the only batteries I can’t charge in my truck for my camera gear are my dslr batteries and at worst my laptop which I would want to use the plugs in the pop up or plugs on inverter if necessary.
Which is what lead me to thinking if I plug the shore power into my inverter I should be able to use the campers plugs. I work 2 jobs and leave tomorrow evening for the trip and this was kind of a last ditch attempt to avoid dealing with a gas generator and have not had time to do a test set up with daylight to test my theory which is what has lead me to ask your opinion if I’m thinking correctly or not. Hitchya_Limit Lifestyle the amp draw will be the question. I would recommend looking into a system that you could run off of the tow vehicle as well. With the vehicle running, the battery your drawing from has a constant 13.5 amp average charge supplying power. The camper has a converter installed, these are different from an inverter. I’m new to pop up campers and still figuring everything out. I have two questions. My camper is a’99 Coleman Sun Valley. On the left side of the galley is a rocker switch. Is that for the water pump? And also, can I use an inverter generator instead of a solar panel to run everything. I usually am not in a formal campground.
Its likely the water pump switch yes. Turn it on, and listed for a water pump to energize to be sure. A generator will supply power to the AC side, and the 12 volt side. For an AC, pick a RV generator with 30 amps of output, and pure sine power.

Not quite. You should already have a 30 amp cord. The AC will need a 20 amp dedicated cord and breaker.
I did exactly what you said not to do and now I don’t have power everything was working then it all cut off .We checked the fuses and the power box. Any idea what it could be?

Hello! I have a 1998 Coleman Rio. Does the refrigerator when set to DC power stay on when I am towing? I'm asking because I want to tow long distances and keep some food at least below room temperature.
It should Jose. If you have an earlier model converter, look for a manual switch that reads BATTERY and switch it to this side. Test the fridge for proper 12 volt operation while closed before your trip. If you only have a 4 way connector, remember that your battery is not being charged by the tow vehicle. If you have a 7 way, the battery is receiving a charge.

I have a Palomino colt 2000. When I plug in shore power I have power in the outlets but no lights, no battery charging, the furnace is not working.
Everything works until the battery runs out of charge.

My Coleman trailer has a kill switch and an on/off switch next to it that is exposed when the trailer is set up to camp. What could this extra switch be for?
Angel, this would be for the water pump, or porch light.
My 96 Coleman seems to only have power in the 20 amp and the 15 amp circuit seems to not be working. I've checked everything except taking the circuit out. We have ceiling lights and one outlet below the front bed that works. Thanks so much

Hello, can you please help me and my husband. We have a Fleetwood pop up with a 6700 series Megnetek converter we replaced the breakers but didn't take down notes on reconnecting the wires do you have a video of this or a diagram.

good video thanks, just got a 03 caramel i just learned it wont rin the water pump and fredge long on 12v , is that ok ? my low voltage alarm kept going on and off so was the pump.
Check your battery voltage, and the water levels across the cells. Sounds like you may need a new 24DC battery.
24 deep cycle. gotcha does cranking amp matter ? is 24 the size? if so my mounting brackets have been moved inwards by me so my marine battery would fit.
No cca starting battery. Use a group 24 deep cycle.

I have a 2015 Rockwood Freedom 1970 and when plugged into shore power, my battery does not charge. Outlets work and fridge work, so shore power is working, but about 3 days into every camping trip all the 12v items stop working (the lights dim, fan stops working, and the lift system to lower the pop up doesn’t work). What would cause this? And recommendations?
Sounds like it’s the converter. Check to see if your getting a charge from the tow vehicle first. If so, converter issue. If not, something’s wrong in the wiring.

i have a 2000 Jayco Eagle Pop-up camper. Can I use a Lithium LifePo4 Deep Cycle rechargeable battery 25.6V 50 Ah to just run the interior lights? (not the AC or outlets)
Sure! Just upgrade the converter to a lithium version as well.

If the battery is dead, but the trailer is plugged in, is there a way to get the interior lights to work? Our outlets work, but the lights only seem to work if the battery is charged, even 8f the trailer is plugged in.
Check your 12 volt fuses in the converter. I believe your going to find one is dead.
How do you test kill switch before replacing?
With a multi meter or test light before and after the switch.
So you need the battery connected at all times to get lights? Or can you just run off of 110 and get lights without the battery connected
The converter builds and distributes 12 volt while plugged in, so no battery required.
So that means if I'm not getting lice off of 110 power my converter is bad?

Hi. New to campers.
When I plug my camper into shore power at 15amps. With Nothing plugged into the outlets and the fridge and lights are turned on. I can turn the furnace on, but it pops a breaker somewhere, but will reset with a couple seconds.
Is this because I’m plugged into 15A and not 30A?
Also, my trailer does not have a battery connected.
15 amp service is enough to run what you are describing. It sounds like you will have to chase down the wiring short Mike.
Can you please help me !? I can figure out my pop up ! At first I was able to use my stove tha work with propane but lately I wasn't able to use my stove or my furnace at all, the first thing I did was to change the tank to a new tank of propane but it didn't work!
It could be the valve inside the acme nut hose. Try this. Close the gas bottle. Unscrew the acme nut. Screw it back on. Now slowly open the gas bottle valve.
New here and need help . have a 1998 Coleman Mesa missing the battery and wiring going to the black and white wires coming out of trailer.I bought a curt soft trac 2 break away kit and not sure how to integrate the wiring any help deeply appreciated.
In this instance, since you are missing components I would enlist the help of an RV mechanic. They will know how to rewire the trailer and test the connections.
Need some help. So I have an old pop up 1985 coleman pinoneer. It has 2 inside dome lights and 2 plug outlets. If I have a large deep cycle battery connected, and switch the inverter to battery. Can I use the outlets. Will they work?
They will unfortunately not Mr. Nathan Hall. For the 110 outlets to work, you will need to be connected to shore (AC) power.

In my trailer the outlets work when plugged into the ac but it's not charging the battery. So after a while the lights and pump no longer work. I can charge the battery with an external battery charger... but why isnt it charging from the ac hook up?
Sounds like the converter 12 volt side is not operating. Check the 12 volt output from your converter.
Hi - Question for anyone out there familiar with a 1999 Niagra Coleman By Fleetwood. I just purchased one and I'm having some issues with the plumbing, specifically a leak under the dinette slideout. Does anyone have a diagram or instructional video on the plumbing basics for this unit?
Kevin, you can find these basic diagrams in your parts manual. I would recommend checking the outside shower. This is typically the culprit in a glide out leak.
What's happens if you pop a fuse, or whatever it is lol.. I just plugged in two heaters and it went out on me. What do I do?
Two heaters will likely draw to many amps. Try just one and see if the breakers holds.
Hello. I have a problem with my 1989 sunlite pop up camper. At the entrance of the electricity cord it says that this connection is for 110/125 volts ac. and has a cord with a regular connection. but when i connect it with an extension to my house, only the plugs work but not the lights. What do you think can be?
I would personally first check the converter and make sure it’s building 12 volt power.
I just bought an ‘95 Coleman Stony Creek and the previous owner said the furnace only able to run on shore power. Is that true? I couldn’t test it right now as the propane connect is broken and I think not replacing it as I won’t cook inside, but if the furnace can be used when we drycamping that would be another story.
Your furnace will run off of 12 volt power / battery and propane. They are not designed for shore power.

Here is 2022 it's not that easy. You will require a very large bank of batteries, and an inverter to make this possible.

I have a 2002 Coleman Fairlake. One of the fuses sparks and blows as soon as it is inserted. Do you think my power converter is bad?
It could be. A multimeter and some testing might be in order.
Find out what the fuse is going to. Its overloaded or arcing for some reason.
Ok I have a 2001 coleman pop up with a/c. I hooked it up to the outlet at a camp ground and it blew a fuse and then everything stopped working even after I replaced the fuse. Now the only way I have a/c is if I plug the a/c into an extension cord or generator. The battery is brand new, yet nothing is working. Could the converter be bad?
Sounds like it Sam. Campground power can be a bit dirty. Not all, but some. I highly recommend the use of a surge protector while plugged in.

I do believe you could get an inverter to run off the battery to plug the 30amp plug into and theoretically run the entire camper
New technologies in batteries are being developed that can allow this for short periods. They will continue to evolve with more power from smaller packs.
Hey! Great video! If I'm going to be 100% stationary plugged into a 30 amp outlet do I need to convert the power to DC for a battery still? I would never ever use it. Also do you have any videos or know of any you could direct me to that would show me how to wire the entire system? I'm starting from scratch, im not doing a water pump or water heater or even lights(I have small battery powered strips and light bars) I just am so confused on the breakers and converts and how it all comes together
Hello Logan! The converter builds and distributes 12 volts as well as 110. So when your plugged in with a converter, you do not need a battery. For wiring, you may want to enlist the help of an certified RV repair tech to properly wire your camper.
Should the Interior ceiling lights run off of AC? My wall outlets work but my ceiling lights don't work. I replaced ceiling bulbs.
The ceiling lights are 12 volt. I would recommend checking the kill switch.
I had the same question/problem. The interior light only works on the 12V battery. I think it’s ridiculous and don’t understand 😏

The connector does not control the amps. The appliance controls the amps. If your ac is hooked to a 20 amp circuit, and asks for 30 amps, it will simply trip the breaker associated with the circuit. If you are connected to a 20 amp circuit, and the AC is running, it is pulling less than 20 amps. How could this damage the unit?
Brad, 20 amps is the minimum for an 13.5 BTU a/c to run. Running them on less than 20 amps, say a normal 15 amp household outlet is not recommended. With a 30 amp connection, most commonly found at campsites you have enough amperage to run the a/c, and any other 110 appliance you can have in your camper. Having Terrible electrical problem. Changed overhead lights to LED. Hooked back up..no light. Yes I switched lighting to make sure had wired correctly due to fact can not reverse bulbs ,solid circuit. So I switched wires. No light. Hooked to my trolling small battery,they work. Hooked back up to plug in garage, no lights.
Did a top rebuild due to rot. So wiring is new. At the lift arm at rear,wiring disconnected when I did rebuild. Checked fuses..all look ok. Burned up my volt tester because I forgot to swap to AC when I tested inside wall outlets..duh! Bought new one. Now afraid to do anything to test wires coming up lift arm. Help!
Tested recepitals got power.
Check your voltage at the lights. Do you have 12 bolts here with both battery and converter power? If so, replace your LED bulbs with ones that have voltage regulators built into the bulb.
my popup camper does not have a battery system, and I have no power in my camper. I was hoping to find help with it but this just explained issues with systems that have batteries.
Hmmm, even the most basic pop up's typically have a converter and battery to power the most basic items such as the lights and water pump. What is the year and model name of your pop up please?

I can’t get that to pull up! So all my fuses are good I have a new battery and I’m plugged in! The overhead lights inside are not working and the fridge isn’t either any ideas what could be wrong? 😢
Check the kill switch. If that doesn’t fix the lights, check the roof power harness. You could have two issues going on. Multi meters and test lights are useful as well to chase what’s hot and what’s not.

Some boxes are easier to wire than others Anthony. If your stuck you may need to enlist the help of a repairman All currently available wiring diagrams can be found online at our webstore colemanpopupparts.com under the link Instructions. Most just show the basics.
My husband left the battery home to have less weight this trip. On the first night, our ceiling lights worked, now they don’t. Do I need the battery even when connected to shore power? What could be wrong? (I checked the galley switch)
Could be the bulbs, a dead short or the converter itself Carol. If your not using a surge protector, consider adding one for your next trip.
I have the same issue as well on my Coleman. when I'm using shore power without any battery on camper, the lights and CO2 detector do not work. What I have had to do is plug the camper into my towing vehicle and lights and such come on. Then I can unplug the camper from the car and the lights and other 12V system keep working. I can't seem to figure that out? I thought the inverter would do the trick on its own when plugged into shore power. Any thoughts?do I always need a battery in my camper to use 12V lights and devices?
@@zako23 that’s a very odd one. You are going to need to do some checking with a multimeter to find the source that’s causing this issue.

Sounds like you might have a short in the wiring somewhere between the body and the roof. Check the roof power harness for 12 volt.
@@popupcamperpro I checked the power to the fuses and everything is good. No fuses blown. That was my first thought..This is my first Travel trailer 2004 trailmanor..I'm a newbie for trailers..Thanks for the info..

The galley lift system is the sink and stove system, most commonly that raises and lowers to the floor. If you camper does not have this item, you may find the kill switch located next to a bed rail.
I have no power when i run my 30a. i have replaced the main power/shore cord. no tripped breakers and fuses not blown. i still have power from a battery source. Any ideas why my 30a side is not working? we were in day 4 of a camping trip when we lost all elec power. was realy hot and had 3 little ones with us, had to pack up in middle of nite.
Sounds like your converter may have failed or took a severe power surge. I would replace the converter, and invest in a good surge protector if you do not already have one.

I bought my popup used and there is no battery installed. I had it plugged in fixing it up and everything worked fine. However when I replaced the trailer plug (4 prong), the trailer lights work, the air unit works, however the inside camper lights do not, and the gas leak alarm beeps "fault - low voltage". What happened? Thanks in advance!
Hello Jody! I suspect that we have at least two issues. One is a typo, and the other a converter perhaps. The typo I suspect is the AC works when you plug it into the tow vehicle. The other is low voltage, no voltage or a failed converter. You will want to check systems independently with a multi meter to isolate the exact issue.
Example : plugged into shore power, what works what does not and what DC readings are we getting where?.

@@popupcamperpro Ok, sorry, I'll try to clarify... Camper was plugged into 30amp while I fixed it up (everything worked inside). Pulled camper out to put on vehicle and replace the plug because the signal/brake lights weren't working. after replacing the plug, the outside signal/break lights started working again. Then disconnected and plugged camper back into house power and the inside lights stopped working. 2 circuit breakers, 1 for air and 1 for the rest. Air works, the rest inside does not and the gas detector beeps with fault light blinking. There is no battery connected.
