F more than that. A time where the likes of Rui Costa and Batistuta would ply their trade at a club like Fiorentina. These days Real or Barca would snap them up instantly. Just like all these young Ajax players are gonna be at Barca or Real next season.
This was an era when Valerón stayed for 16 years at Depor, Le Tissier graced Southampton, Kinkladze played for a poor Manchester City, Juninho and Ravanelli played for Middlesbrough. Talent was spread around the leagues and clubs. Now it’s whoever has the money and who’s gonna win everything. It’s a shame.

For me personally, Rui Costa was a better player than Modric ever was.. and Modric was considered best player in the world.. so there you go. Rui Costa was so so good. He went to Fiorentina and was comfortable there. He always had many offers. If he had gone to a Real or a Barcelona.. he would had been more known. But he was one of the greatest at this time...

@Yassin Zao I couldn't agree less. Pep structures the team so that creativity can flourish from the most talented players. He even gives them total freedom in the last third of the pitch.
Why do you think he played Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Lahm, Alonso, de Bruyne, Bernardo or David Silva instead of the big muscle, running all the time, type of midfielder?
Because he is a great coach from this perspective. And his Barcelona is arguably, in terms of aesthetics, the best team that has ever played the game.
@@ktmtxt Nah, I partly agree with Yassinzao. While I do like the football Pep teams play, he stiffles a lot of his technical players. They are stuck to their position too much. Bernardo, as an example, is a player than in any other team would have much more freedom.

Messi fit into Guardiola's system - he was always trying to find space in the half spaces which the one of the pilars of Guardiola's system, so your idea that he kills creativity is just bonkers because he could received the ball without been marked because of Guardiola's system. What he doesn't like is selfish players who have zero spacial awareness and they try to dribble when they could pass or move outside position because they want the ball. That's not who Messi is.

Anyone who knows anything about football and actually watches the games knows that his teams play the best football on the planet. I understand that it's hard for people like you who think football is not a team's sport and you rather watch 10000 hours of player's highlights on UA-cam than an actual game, but that's not what football is.
Also, everyone knows Ibra beef with Guardiola and everyone knows that video where he says as a manager he's great but as a man he is not. So basically their problem was more personal than professional.

He is the Roger Federer of football - absolutely effortless! Trust me when I say this - this man's vision was something else! He was also one of my Idols growing up him, Figo Pinto and Domingos! That era of football won't come again. At that time Portugal had won the world cup under 21s if I am correct and they were known as the golden team - the team that should have eventually won the world cup at a senior level! Some incredible players like Paulo Futre, Peixe, Baía, Couto & J. Pinto! Shame it never really capitalised into a major trophy! But whatever remains, Rui Costa was a LEGEND! Such a silky ball carrier who beat people as if they weren't even there..wonderfully inventive passer of the ball too..Great player.. Had a very languid style but technically he was absolutely superb..The partnership he had with Batistuta at Fiorentina is stuff of legend..YNWA

@Roy Sunshine Well let's not kid ourselves, Rui Costa also played for what was arguably Portugal's Golden generation which also produced a Ballon d'or winner in Figo. In reality Portugal underachieved and if you recall in two of those major tournaments the Portuguese were knocked out by Zidane and Co. Now I agree those French teams were strong, but I'll put it this way, they were a well built engine but Zidane was the oil that made it flow.
