  • As the old saying goes, even the best-laid plans often go awry. No matter how hard we try sometimes things go wrong as it did on this dig. We were back with Sam and Andy at the site where Sam found his broken banner last year (link below). We met up with Al, Chris and Will from Newton County and Timothy Kirk from the Christian Archaeology Arrowhead Hunting channel (link below) After breakfast we had another great dig, plenty of arrowheads and some very cool pottery comes out of the ground too. So please join us on another spectacular arrowhead hunt and adventure! Please let us know what you think in the comments and as always, thanks for watching.

    Its always frustrating when you find a bowl or pot and you think its all there, then there's some missing. I can't tell you how many times that's happened to me. It's still exciting making the find though.

    We have several whole pots (water jugs actually), the trick is to splash water on it as soon as it comes out of the ground(quickly) or it will crumble to pieces.

    Well spike it still amazes me I've hunted for 40 yrs also and we get so used to saying well that's 3500 years old and we associate that point with a particular individual but there could be say 4 or more generations in a hundred years that's a 140 generations of people since that point was used talk about history !

      That TQ degrades so bad in some soils. They become almost like hard clay. I have seen them crumble in your hand. Not the case here though. It was fragile but I should have known better. The first whack with the shovel had already done major damage so I guess the other two don't really matter.

    • @HeartbreakerRelics

      Each site is different. You have to dig until you are no longer finding debitage (chips and flakes).

      @@HeartbreakerRelics hey spike, question. So I dug for like 6 hours yesterday and found millions of flakes and brokes, but I didn’t dig deep enough to the point of finding nothing. I would just change spots after so many flakes. So I should be digging past the flakes until I’m finding nothing to increase my chances of finding whole points? Thanks!

    There's a product called Paraloid B-72 that you need to check into. Another channel I watch uses it to hold together fossils that are falling apart. In reading up on it, it should be perfect for recovering the pottery and keep it intact. Of course you would have to be more precise in the excavation of the pieces!

  • @iwalkincircles2960
    @iwalkincircles2960 2 роки тому +2

    I feel that being in the ground the pot was wet. I've also noticed that when you pick up a wet piece that if you let it dry it becomes harder, or not as fragile. Do you think it would have been better to dig a little and let it dry, then dig some more?

    • @HeartbreakerRelics
      @HeartbreakerRelics  2 роки тому +1

      It's possible. We haven't dug many large pieces of pottery until the past year and we're still learning. It may be something we may need to try. Thanks!

      I pick up alot after the fields are plowed and get rain on. When I find them they are brittle and will crumble In your fingers. The longer it's in your pocket or in the sun, it dries alot of the water out. I've also seen where the archeologist will leave the pot partially exposed.

    • @iwalkincircles2960

    Gotta admire their pottery~ they weren't in one location long enough to create a proper kiln. So it seems their pottery is ultra fragile and rare...and served a almost religious, medicineman/woman , shamanistic purpose. Who knows!

    my dad growing up would go looking once in while. Also people should only do this to respect Native culture. Leave any bones. Keep records of any possible find. Join archaeology society. Get permission on any property. It may be illegal to collect thes finds. See the laws and customs from others. This is not about making money.
    I seen some "mudlarking" vids from England...looking for mostly antiques stuff, and they need gov permission. I guess they only give out a few permits.
