The 7.62x54 mm Dragunov military sniper rifle holds a unique role within the army sniper community and is the rifle of choice for the squad designated marksman. It’s higher magazine capacity and ability to fire semi-automatic allows for a soldier to engage multiple enemy targets quickly.

Can we all just appreciate how badass the name "Dragunov" is?
It gives off the impression that the rifle is either used by or used to kill dragons, and I think that's epic.
Actually the surname takes its roots from the word "dragoon", not "dragon". Dragon in Russian would be Дракон (drakon).
@@TheR00k how does it take its roots from a 17 century British term when its found in 12 century old church Slavonic roots and names...
@@mitri5389 Oh wow, looked into the etymology. First of all, yes it does take root from "dragoon", but "dragoon" is French for dragon. So it IS dragon, but in a roundabout way.
Second, I wasn't able to find ANY XII century people with that family name.
@@TheR00k the root word drag in slavic languages means dear or precious one, such names like dragomir, dragan, dragica incorporate this root word. what doesn't make sense is how you think the name dragunov cames from a non slavic word coined in the 17 century for a type of rifleman. are going to say a name like kamenov or kamenski comes from the german word "kamen" came...
@@mitri5389 With that root it would be "Dragov" then, or "Dorogov", since "drag" evolved into "dorog" a long time ago in Russian.

@@neurofiedyamato8763 yo

@@neurofiedyamato8763 by that logic America should call the western front the eastern front, but they don't. america does the more logical designation (atleast officialy) compaired to silly europeans (and us imperials) by labeling by theatres.
@@matthiuskoenig3378 And yes it would be logical for Americans to call Europe the eastern front if they are basing it off of their own geographic location. It all depends on your frame of reference. There's no real correct answer to that. It is merely convention that here in the West we use Germany as the geographic reference. Russia was under Soviet rule and their education system is quite isolated from the rest of the world, so they simply used their own geographic reference rather than the Western convention.
I will also argue theaters is far more accurate name as it pin points the exact geographic location rather than a broad direction. Regardless Theater and fronts coexist. Theater consists of multiple fronts, so they aren't a mutually exclusive system.

M14 is also old, but still a platform that can last another 50 or so years. SVD and M14 are the best designated sniper rifles ever.
The M14 is two years older and fires 308 which has better velocities than the 54r cartridge. Also the M14 has a hire ammunition capacity. They also weigh about the same. The MOA of the 14 is a little better shooting non ball ammo. But comparable to the SVD with M80 ball.

My ucle was sniper in the finnish army in the 80s he used meny rifles including dragunov
Grenade Laucher DMR
Thaaaat.. Is sort of a weird thing to talk about when it comes to the SVD.
The SVD definitely is a DMR in modern standard but before the SV-98 became the main sniper rifle being used by Russian forces, the SVD was the main "sniper" rifle used by everyone in the Eastern Bloc and even those that are influenced by it like the Chinese with their own version of it, the Yugoslavians with their own versions and the Iraqis too.
Besides, the SVD being used as "a single man rifle" isn't odd as that's how Soviet doctrine was taught to marksman across the board that their job is just to flush out snipers and hit HVT (High Value Targets) that the squad leader spots or simply just be on a lookout for anything that moves and take them down. They too move in a 2-man team for missions and this is more obvious for the Spetsnaz when they used the 2-man per sniper attachment during the Beslan School Siege and the Moscow Theater attack. You could even see from one clip during the Beslan School Siege about a sniper watching a window at the back of the school and his spotter watched a kid fell out of the window and climbing back in. The spotter frantically waved his hand while standing up to gain attention of his superiors while radioing back for instructions to open fire at the kid's shin to disable her with the sniper having his sight on the kid all the time and they pulled it off.
The rifle is also accurate enough to be a proper sniper. Most DMR, even with the US's superior craftsmanship with the SR-25 and M110, MAO for those guns are about 1.25 - 1.38 while the normal MOA the Russian military wants for the Dragonuv is 1.25, the SVD can hit 1.08 which is about the same as the M40A5 could pull which is very good.
The SVD is one of my favorite sniper rifles of all time I would love to own one or the more affordable option preferably

Funny fact, it's actually named after "Dragon", but not directly. Lastname Dragunov is originated from word Dragoon, a type of cavalry, one which fighting on horse or dismounted, and name Dragoon itself originated from French "dragon" and they named so probably because of a type of wheelock gun which they originally used decorated with a dragon on it's muzzle

A more appropriate comparison would be to the SR25/M110/Mk11/AR10, not the M14.
Those aren’t really common squad level firearms.
M14 has been modified for dmr use since Vietnam and is the Americans’ response to the SVD, and the two are classic rivals.
Problem is nowadays you don't actually need a $3000 rifle to do DMR work. Soviet doctrine more less "torso hit at 600m" IIRC they pay over $4000 and as much as $7000 for an SR25
@@Relyt345 The M14 is now becoming increasingly rarer in military service because of the AR-10(SR-25) series of rifles and the newer HK417 rifles performing much better. Oh yeah don’t forget the SCAR-H.

The SVD is a good rifle for what it's designed for. Accurate enough and semi-auto to boot. In this era a bolt gun is a liability at times.
0:59 And some other photos you show are the Romanian PSL, not the SVD. Unlike the SVD, the PSL is a Kalishnikov scaled up to 7.62x54r. The most tell tale signs of a PSL as opposed to an SVD is the magazine having an X(though not a guarantee), the upper hand-guard being being a bit shorter than the lower hand-guard (the hand-guards on the SVD is the same length for both the top and bottom), and the more conventional looking dust cover and lever safety of the PSL, which is more identical to the AK than the SVD.
