As a man of 31 having already gone through the phase of discovering Carlin for the first time, my new favorite thing is watching younger people's reactions in the same exact situation. It's like having a third person view of myself ten (give or take) years ago. The man was a genius in so many ways, very few have been able to push limits like he did...especially in this social climate. Keep reacting to his videos. Millennial here, discovered George Carlin at 14 (by watching Outrageous Fortune, the 1987 film, not the TV series, and thinking he was JUST an actor), then discovered he was actually one of the greatest comedians and philosophers that ever walked the Earth. Now I love watching other Millennials and Gen Z see him for the first time. We need Carlin back SO BADLY.
Carlin was trying to make a point. He was trying to shock people. "Everyone" wants death penalty, as long as its being done "by someone else" and "in a place where i don't have to see it or deal with it". The minute you start trying to make it visible and something everyone has to deal with, be it to see the gory details in person or by trying to explain and defend it to their kids, people usually don't feel too comfortable. But hey, it's probably easier to just see it as a comedy bit.
Carlin's stuff is absolutely TIMELESS. I love watching new people introduced to his mindset and genuis. I'm just waiting to see one of these "younger" reaction channels catch on to the fact that almost every single death he mentions in this bit was on Game of Thrones at some point and we all know how much people loved that shit. One of the things that's so great about George, is when he is shocking people, he is deliberately crossing the line. He is making people uncomfortable, but there's always a basic truth there at the heart of his comedy. His amazing intellect goes way over many people's heads. In terms of stand-up, he is the greatest ever, at least for me he is.

It's kinda the "Batman" argument. "I'm not talking about the Penguin, Riddler or Catwoman. I'm talking about someone so deranged, they are beyond saving". Maybe people are scared that if the Government starts Executing "Criminals" that one Day, they get a bit too "generous" with their Death Sentences. See, this is why Carlin is the master at what he does. The bit was set up basically like "The Aristocrats", where he's constantly going further and further over the top and getting more and more extreme and twisted. And as he builds toward the end of the bit, he starts playing with the audience's expectations, setting it up so they think the final punchline is gonna be the most extreme thing they've ever heard. But then all it ends up being is a lame pun. "Wouldn't know whether he was coming or going" sounds almost like a dad joke. It's intentionally anticlimactic. Genius.
If you’re reacting to George carlin, you absolutely need to react to a “place for your stuff” It is in my opinion one of the greatest bits of stand-up comedy in history and one of his greatest bits.
I really love the dark satire in this bit, one of the few stand up routines of his where he actually doesn’t believe what he’s saying, he’s making a broader point on how people seem to get off on the death penalty. Some people in the auditorium seemed to think Carlin actually wanted this to happen lol
I think it was Commander Shepard who said "It's not the severity of punishment that deters criminals, it's the certainty". Capital punishment doesn't work because people are still committing capital crimes.

Believe everything the government tells you to believe. I have another idea on this. You take a person who messes with kids & put them in a room with a sicko who likes to kill people in really disgusting ways! Give them a job. We know there's no rehabbing either of those groups.
Actually, most death row inmates spend years trying different appeal strategies to avoid being executed. That's why it takes so long to carry out the sentences.

@@ZEPnALE George Stinney Jr. 14, executed for murdering two white girls in SC 1944. He was forced into signing a confession letter, and his family was run out of town. He wasn’t even physically big enough to commit crimes of this nature.

She only ruled that he had not received a fair trial, specifically citing the 6th Amendment. In any case, that trial was 20 years before the Miranda ruling, and post WW II criminal procedure laws. It was also more than 2 decades before civil rights and voting rights legislation which, among other effects, essentially prevent all white juries.

One I remember ages ago was the notion that if I was ever convicted of a capitol offence, but allowed to choose my method of execution...then I’d ask to be taken to the Super Bowl, or the soccer World Cup, or some other major sporting event where the fans take their fanaticism of it a bit too seriously, be stood out in the field at half time with a microphone and say “you people do realise it’s JUST A GAME RIGHT!?”...be dead within minutes

Part of the point about the death penalty not doing anything is also because all studies show it doesn't actually work as a deterrent to people committing crimes.

Actually, most death row inmates spend years trying different appeal strategies to avoid being executed. That's why it takes so long to carry out the sentences.

@@ZEPnALE George Stinney Jr. 14, executed for murdering two white girls in SC 1944. He was forced into signing a confession letter, and his family was run out of town. He wasn’t even physically big enough to commit crimes of this nature.

She only ruled that he had not received a fair trial, specifically citing the 6th Amendment. In any case, that trial was 20 years before the Miranda ruling, and post WW II criminal procedure laws. It was also more than 2 decades before civil rights and voting rights legislation which, among other effects, essentially prevent all white juries.
