My wife and I lived onboard and cruised for 3 years when in our 40s with three kids, before GPS, no radar, AIS or watermaker. I think these were the best three years of my life. Did it again for two years in our 70s with the luxury of GPS plotter charts, AIS and watermaker on a catamaran. Another 'best years of our life', cruising the Australian coast. So easy now with all the electronics and good weather forecasts. We are not wealthy, bought what we could afford and made it work. To anyone who is watching this couple and thinking of leading this fantastic lifestyle, educate yourself about boats and seamanship and just do it. You're a long time dead.
Very well presented and of course, with professional narration .. There are no "bad" parts as it was referred to, that is indeed real sailing and the rewards are the "nice" experiences you magnificently illustrated .. Thanks for sharing..
For some reason my husband and I really enjoyed today’s video. We have never sailed, but it’s nice to feel part of your adventure. Looking forward to all the places we will probably never go to, but we will enjoy them with you. Very best wishes. 😊
Love watching your journey. Cant get that some sailors are constantly rushing and stressing to get from A to B. Seems you two are truly enjoying the journey. Thank you
it was great to go with you again through your memories and realised dreams, both good and bad. I have really enjoyed 'being with you' via your blogs - they have been very helpful over the past year especially! Take care - looking forward to the next adventure...
As much as we like these “look back” videos, I for one am extremely excited for you guys to set sail again. Just as much as you are to set sail too!! All the best Richard.
As always a beautiful video, photography and high-level editing. Well done... After a life spent at sea, since I'm retired for most of the year I have lived on a sailing boat with my wife, I recognize myself in your story between good and bad. Older than you, now the "inconveniences" of life on a boat limit a long stay a bit. The force that always pushes me towards this simple lifestyle is the need for freedom. It will never cease ... Good wind 💨, stay safe
I really enjoy following you two, you seem to have a good time wherever you are, Steve has the sailing knowledge and the patients of a stone, Judy always willing to help get things done, you fit together, compliment each other. Another very nice video, thanks for sharing. Fair winds and safe travels.
Splendid episode and great production...The Good definitely outweighs the bad and being able to explore incredible places and cultures to meet new friends and experiences has to be very rewarding! Stay safe, fair winds and look forward to your future travels😎⛵
wow, fantastically exquisite insight into your sailing life including your lockdown episodes. love your lifestyle and love how you record and share it too, so professionally. Fair Winds guys, stay safe
I May have missed reference in previous videos but picked up at 16 mins that you finished your Phd" Judy! A considerable achievement In less than ideal conditions I would surmise. Congratulations!
Superb channel. I really enjoy your videos - quality, relaxing, interesting and amusing!. If I knew how to sail, and also how to persuade my wife to live on a boat - it’d be a miracle come true!. Meanwhile, thank you so much for sharing your good & bad experiences👍
Just seen your blog, heard you are missing the Indian spicy foods. Not too far away down in Greece through levkas canal bare tound to port a way into paleros, is a little sea front restaurant has a proper Bangladeshi chef who serves up exactly what you'd expect from an English based Indian. We are live aboard from Poole having been in Caribbean for 6 years and now 2 in the med, based levkas.
I would enjoy the sailing. Sightseeing not so much. Got both my jabs in February, but I'm in the US got lucky through my healthcare provider servicing it's clients first. I would definitely put in a water maker unless you are going to shower in wine and beer if necessary. :)
I had to chuckle when you described live-aboard sailing as “the simple life”. It seems to have many upsides, as you ably demonstrate, but looks to be a non-stop series of complications compared to life in bricks and mortar: from gathering basic daily essentials such as water to all the red tape with visas and checking in and out of various countries, not to mention the unending boat maintenance and kit replacement. Simple? 😄
We are hoping to spend some time there on the way out. Covid meant we were delayed and had to miss it on the way in and Brexit may mean we are limited on the way back. Although I might be able to get a Maltese passport as my mother was Maltese and my sister lives there, so hopefully Malta won't be missed!
I echo the comment below. Lovely video as usual....one thing: I haven't seen anything about water collection...do you not have some sort of rainwater collection facility as water can be a problem to obtain?
Water collection outside the tropics doesn’t really work, you need a good downpour to wash the salt away and then start collecting. We will be going down the water maker route though I’m afraid, collecting water is just too much trouble.
I've spoke before as i'm looking at a Hans Christian and following you both. What i NEED to know DOES THIS YACHT FEEL LIKE A HOME?? I'm looking at a more modern yacht to but this will just re confirm??? Love to you both ⚘🙏
Well yes that's actually a very good point and one that many people strangely don't consider. To live on a boat you don't want to feel like you're camping. I think a Hans Christian is one of the best boats around for that. I suppose if you can live in a cheap new build house that's all plaster board and ikea furniture then a standard production boat will probably be okay. You'll just be replacing cheap fake wood doors that are starting to peel, with ragged laminated wood on your boat. But there's no replacement for craftsmanship. You will be much happier living on a properly built boat and it's not just because it will look good, it's because it will perform well. Have good insulation, not creek & groan, get mildew and smelly and actually be designed to hold and store things at sea, not just to look good in a marina (while it's new, most won't even do that after a while) So be VERY careful of your choice of modern yacht. They have advantages, just don't give up the very important criteria of having a quality functional yacht for a spare double cabin!
At the moment it's trying to avoid them as best as possible! We do of course turn off electrics, unplug VHF antennas etc but we don't have a system of grounding the boat yet. It's really about trying to match the boats potential to the potential of the air and sea around you. We will be accessing what more we can do before we get to regions of regular lightning, fitting a lightning dissipator to the top of the mast and looking into a grounding plate on the hull.
So.. are you back in Venice? Did you say your not allowed to leave while lockdown is on? I am still stuck in Sicily until travel between regions is allowed. Hope this lockdown ends 30th April and is not extended.. Any more info on overstaying Schengen Visa?
We are in the UK this week, we had our Covid jabs & will be returning to Venice at the weekend (only possible because we have a contract for some filming work we are doing in Venice, travel as a tourist is still prohibited) It's a huge palaver coming into the UK too now, a test before you go 10 days in quarantine and two more tests (at great expense) while you're there, it's really best avoided, which I guess is the point as taking two extra tests at a cost of £400 when you're already tested negative and are in quarantine has got to be designed to put people off rather than for any medical reason. Schengen is going to be interesting as I can see a lot of people having to overstay including us if things don't open up soon.
Great videos. How is Brexit impacting on your plans and how are you working around the the 90/180 day rules that apply to non EU citizens and 18th month rule to your boat?
We’ve talked about that a lot on previous episodes. Have a look at this one: ua-cam.com/video/dL0Gkgq3Eas/v-deo.html. We go through it white other sailors as well in there to try and get an idea of how it’s affecting everyone.
Most of the people who sail consider it only a means to reach a goal, be it winning a race or visiting far out countries. This is of course legitimate. But there is another kind of attitude which a few of us share, the means is the goal! This attitude is wonderfully expressed by the greatest sailor of all the times: Joshua Slocum: “Be the current against us, what matters it? Be it in our favour, we are carried hence, to what place or for what purpose? Our plan of the whole voyage is so insignificant that it matters little, maybe, whither we go, for the "grace of a day" is the same! Is it not a recognition of this which makes the old sailor happy, though in the storm; and hopeful even on a plank in mid-ocean? Surely it is this! for the spiritual beauty of the sea, absorbing man's soul, permits of no infidels on its boundless expanse.” Joshua Slocum, The voyage of the Libertade
We normally have the dinghy on the foredeck but really it’s just for safety, Fair Isle is a very heavy & powerful boat & isn’t really affected by the drag of the dinghy.
