2020 Triumph Bobber Black - Road Test Review

  • Triumph has hit the nail on the head with the bobber look which probably originated in the UK, post WWII. The bobber look is there in spades along with modern mechanicals and performance. With 75 hp and a little over 500 lbs. of weight, the Bobber Black pegs the FUN meter. Many thanks to Bobby Sanchez at Tampa Triumph for allowing me the use of this bike. 7000 N Dale Mabry Hwy., Tampa, FL 33614 - 813-410-7913 www.TampaTriumph.com

    Saw a guy riding a Bobber and I was so impressed that I went to the Harley/Triumph dealer to check them out; did a test ride on both the Bobber and a Speedmaster, which is pretty much the same bike but with a pillion seat. Always loved Bonnevilles, so next thing I knew, I bought a Goldline Speedmaster LE - a work of motorcycle art. It easily could have gone either way, but I wanted the seat option. Two of the most stunning bikes out there. Retro-plus...

    My 70th birthday present to myself, I just got mine a couple of weeks ago, and I completely concur. I did get a couple of extras, adding the panniers and floorboards, a 12 volt power socket to plug in my phone and the phone mount/carrier option. I had decided that for my 70th birthday, I was either going to go to Tibet and climb Mt. Everest or get a motorcycle. Upon urging from my wife, I settled on the motorcycle. Mt. Everest can wait til my 80th birthday.

    Jerry: Loved this video! Your comments on the Bobber are spot-on! I'm 70 and bought my Bobber last September. I can't park it anywhere without drawing attention. Looks, sounds great. I love my 2015 Road King, too, but the Bobber is just a straight-up blast to ride.

    I've watched dozens of reviews on this bike. It is practically burning a hole in my wallet right now! Your review was so helpful because it offers a view few others have - the more mundane city roads that so many of us have to navigate if we want to get out into the countryside or elsewhere. And even though this is a review video, I want to say how much I appreciate that you incorporate helpful riding tips, like the caution about the front brake. Those reminders are even more effective when they're used outside of a purely instructional context. As a rider I've gone from zero to 60 confidence-wise in a short time, and I owe a lot of that to your vids. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge and the time you put into making these!

    I have the Rocket III. I am planning on getting a Triumph Scrambler XE soon. Now you've got me wanting a Triumph Bobber!!! I don't consider myself a Triumph person, but it is beautiful. My long distance cruiser is my 1998 full dress Honda Valkyrie. I love it. I used to tell people I would get rid of my wife before I got rid of my Valkyrie. Now she is my ex and the Valkyrie is sitting in my garage! It is the smoothest and best handling bike I have ever ridden.

    Always loved Triumph bikes and the Bobber is just killer looking. That tank though means taking a 100 mile ride would mean one stop for gas. I have rides in Tennessee where that would be a problem. I’d rather see this bike come with a 650 or even a 500cc engine to stretch that distance out a bit. AND it’s more fun to thrash a bike with a slow engine than work to avoid overpowering and running too fast into turns. Fit and finish in these is top notch and Triumph is now making bikes that hold up very well.

    Love how you said it’s not for wimps, and mentioned that if you see a bump stand up a bit. I’ve watched other reviews where they complain about bumps and I was wondering why don’t you stand up a bit. When I took the motorcycle safety course years ago my instructor taught us to do that. Then riding a ninja for the last 16 years it was a must on some of our country roads if you didn’t want to get bucked. So thank you for mentioning that.

    Jerry, I have beed riding ridding for over 50 years, I took your course 10 years ago and I l gained more riding expertise in one day than the previous 40 years. I own a 2020 CVO Street Glide and a 2017 Triumph Bobber. I agree totally with your comments. For me it is the perfect combination. As much as I love my HD, when riding around town and in rural areas the Bobber is pure fun. I added apes as I am 6'1"" and it improved my shoulder blade discomfort. BTW my Bobber gets far more people gawking and asking about it especially what year it is. They assume it is from the mid 60s. For those my age Triumph was the first bad ass motorcycle, Steve McQueen after all rode a Triumph. Keep up the reviews. Well done.

    I love these videos, I rode for several years but I haven’t ridden over 15 years now and watching these I realize that I was just lucky I didn’t really know what I was doing😂 i’m glad I didn’t die but this makes me want to start riding again. I did OK before but my low speed ability was almost nonexistent and riding fast really isn’t that hard or it wasn’t for me and I guess I was safe but I still think it was a lot more lucky. If I grab another bike I’m going to put in a whole Lotta practice and then when I think I’ve got it covered I’m gonna try and find some of these classes because it’s good as you think you are it’s always good to have someone who really knows what they’re doing watching it from a different perspective. The other mistake I always made was I had cheap safety equipment I had a heavy jacket but it wasn’t a bike jacket I had no armor I didn’t wear boots and I always wore jeans or thicker pants but that’s not gonna do much to help. When I started writing in the 80s they had a couple classes but we never took them we thought we were too cool for them And we didn’t have the Internet we just sort of winged it with everything. I definitely think I’d like to get a bike and just run through these drills and just develop the skills and get good at it and even just watching those videos and getting an idea of how to set up some drills and learn the techniques is great. I never learned a ride I just got on the bike and figured it out and did what felt right But I think taking these classes and even just watching the videos and going through a bunch of these drills is pretty awesome

    i bought my Bobber Black brand new in 2018 and love every bit of it...it's funny when you said it's not made for high speed touring... this bike does have saddle bags as accessories...and I didn't see you ride it on the freeway either. I was considering Harley as well before buying this bike but for the price and technology that this bike has - throttle by wire, traction control, ABS, ride modes, cruise control - Harley doesn't stand a chance...you also mentioned how smooth this bike was and it's true...vibration on the Harley was a huge turn off for me as well.

    Triumph hit the ball out of the park with the Bobbers. I've had a Standard for a couple of years, the most flawless machine i've ever owned. I wonder if the black handles as well as the standard model? I think stylistically the standard is a better looking bike, the perfect balance of brawn and class. The whole fat-front-tire and blacked-out everything look to my sensibilities is trying too hard to be "cool." And we know what trying too hard does to cool. I suppose they did this for the American market. Oh well, if it were the only bobber option i'd still go for it. Awesome machines!

    • @fci7978
      @fci7978 2 роки тому

      "Trying too hard to be cool. I suppose they did this for the American market." Eat a squirrel, Jon. I think you're trying too hard to justify your penny pinching. The Bobber Black is much better looking (IMO), rides and handles better than the standard Bobber without question. Although looks are subjective, the riding/braking/handling are facts. I can not stop anywhere without someone asking me about my Bobber Black...It's that sexy. I love my 2019 HD RGS, but it rarely happens on that bike. Let's go Brandon!

    I’m sure you’ve already covered this question but I’m a new subscriber and let me say I truly LOVE your videos! I too am a 30 year sheriff officer but never on a bike! I do ride a bike off duty and I have to be honest I know nothing about riding a bike other than keep it between the lines and hope for the best. My question is...what do you do once you have already committed to a hard lean into a curve and you suddenly encounter gravel or sand covering the road from side to side of the road? I know what happened to me! I was in a hard left turn and was just fine until halfway through the curve I ran into a good amount of gravel which was washed out from a hard rain. I attempted to just ride it out without panic and without hitting my brakes but once my front tire hit the gravels, the front slid out causing me to go down! I was able to stay on the bike without injury but my passenger decided they wanted off which resulted in some road rash! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the vids, I am learning from them.

      @motorman857  4 роки тому +2

      You approach a turn from the outside of the curve. That will give you the best view thru the turn. You should be at a speed that will allow you to straighten up the bike and stop, within your sight distance.

      3.8 Litres per 100 Kilometres? I have no idea what that means. You could have said 600 Giga bites. to a tank for all I know. Is that the 3rd world metric system they use to con you into thinking they aren't scalping you on gas prices? 😁

      Ride Like a Pro Jerry Palladino, in January, 1966 the cost of petrol in Australia was 1/3 (one shilling and three pence = 15 cents) per Australian gallon (4.2 ltr/gallon). In March 1966 Australia became decimal (currency, weights, measures etc) and the petrol was now Australian 15 cents per litre (4.2 times the cost). 100 kilometres is 5/8 = 62.5 miles (Aust). 3.8 litres = 0.9 Australian gallon. The Australia gallon in greater than the US gallon. 62.5 miles per 0.9 Aust. Gallon.

    Hey Jerry, have you test ridden the new 2020 HD Fat Boy? If not, could you when you get a chance and give me your opinion of it? Matt Laidlaw has shown the new 2020 model and looks really cool, but he also says that it's not a bike that would do well in twisty roads and such and would be better suited for cruising in straights. So, if you get a chance, I'd appreciate a review of it. Thanks, Jerry

    Hey Jerry, Real nice looking bobber, Hope Triumph can stay stable in the motorcycle market these days. By the way how do you really like test riding the softail slim s.

    • @motorman857
      @motorman857  4 роки тому

      The Softtail slim was a real nice cruiser. The handlebars put me in a bit of a forward lean which bothers my back after a while. I'd add H..D.'s 4.5 x 1.5 pullback risers to be in the perfect position but that depends on a persons height. As far as handling and the fun to ride factor, I'd pick the Fat Bob over the Slim. Plus I hear there are some great deals right now on the Fat Bob.
