  • There was plenty of drama as a 60,000 tonne cruise ship complete with its own theatre docked at a port in Cornwall. Described as a floating “boutique hotel”, the 236-metre-long Spirit of Discovery is one of the longest ships able to dock at County Wharf in Falmouth.
Arriving from the Isles of Scilly at sunrise, the cruise ship operated by Saga is due to spend the night in Falmouth, before heading to Portsmouth on Friday to complete its 10-day round-trip to the Isles of Scilly and Western Britain. Spirit of Discovery has 10 decks and can carry up to 987 passengers and 530 crew.
The arrival of the cruise ship in Falmouth will be welcomed by many local businesses, after the massive MSC Virtuosa arrived and then cancelled its visit at the last minute on Friday (May 31). The 331 metre cruise ship was due to anchor off Pendennis Point, but was forced to abort the stopover because the north-westerly wind was too strong to ferry the 5,000 or so passengers from it to Falmouth harbour.
