I love the insight from these 2 guys. Pete, this is a great show you have going. Every topic is so interesting....so insightful by all who are involved. I really liked that you picked Jim Morrison. He was definitely a problem child.

You guys forgot the ULTIMATE problem child: GInger Baker! Its seems like it did not take much for ANYONE to get on his bad side. In fact he may have been 90% "Bad Side" The Documentary "Beware of Mr Baker" appropriately depicts him as a roaming vandal leaving a path of professional and personal destruction throughout his career. Its amazing at times he just abandons situations without a word leaving groups in the lurch with no idea where he moved!
Popoff and Pardo are at again with a discussion of various reasons that certain individuals can be viewed as a 'problem child.' Jim Morrison immediately came to mind when this show started so glad to see Pete pull and quick-change and include him. There may have been other poster-children for this episode during the late 60s but Pete's choice and discussion was spot on. Particularly down here in Florida where Morrison 'allegedly' exposed himself to the audience in Miami on 3/1/69. Being 13 at the time and also more than 300 miles away, my folks would never have let me go to that concert in any event but this likely caused their increased interest in the concerts my brother was going to at the time and the those I was just starting to be interested in seeing. Thanks to Martin and Pete for another interesting topic and the variations of reasons and people discussed. There ya go!
My story about Diamond head. I worked for 8yrs for a firm with Brian Tatler's dad. When he retired I went to his retirement party and Brian was there. I spent 10mins telling him they should reform. A few month later they were touring again and then they released Death and Progress.

When I was 12 or 13 years old, my favorite uncle moved me and showed me Animals by Pink Floyd. That Album may not be their best ever but in my mind is top 3 ever in their discography. Just amazing top to bottom. The whole album is so incredible. All of the players doing just insane things and it all comes together with this Wall of Sound. I know that stoners and acid/ mushroom trippers love all of this but you do not need any of that to absolutely love this record by Pink Floyd/Animals... What a beast of a record. Wish you were here, Dark side of the Moon. Just bang bang albums of the 1970's. Gilmore's tone is just on another planet level

As much as I love Roger Waters as an artist and a songwriter (Roger was really the main songwriter after Piper At The Gates of Dawn), I agree with Martin, Amused to Death is far and away the best Floyd solo album, However, I think Roger is a living breathing contraction. Any who has been married as many times as he has and seemingly can’t get along individuals should never be giving advice on how entire nations and millions of people should behave. I agree with you Pete. Rock musicians should not be giving advice in the world of politics when most have such chaotic private lives.
Your comment reminds me of Ricky Gervais at the 2020 Golden Globes. He eviscerated those pretentious, self righteous Hollywood elites for their preaching practices while demonstrating such a lack of character in their own personal endeavors and business dealings. I would not have that Ronnie Van Zant would be considered a "problem child". ok, I'll talk your word for it, but I have always thought that he was the glue that kept the original band professional and heading in the right direction. The leader of the band. On the other hand Allen Collins always seemed more of a wild out of control member, in my opinion.
The John Sykes thing is really weird. Way back in about 1978 before Tygers even, I wouldn’t say he was a friend but our paths crossed socially and with his then band Streetfighter a few times. He was a really laid back and friendly bloke ,but ambitious person that just seemed to enjoy playing and writing. Obviously that was 43 years ago and we all change but I don’t recognise this version of Sykes that is so reluctant to get his music out there and be playing live.
John Sykes must be in his 60s , he's old enough to retire from music. He recorded 2 albums with Tygers of Pantang in 1981 , he joined Thin Lizzy the following year, recorded 2 albums with Whitesnake, 1 being their best selling album. Blue Murder albums wound up in the bargain bin sections of your favorite Record Store, but still they were real major label albums. I would consider John Sykes more of a success in his own way than Guns n Roses who are still only remembered for 2 successful studio albums. A lot of musicians would be happy just to have been part of the NWOBHM movement, so give the guy a break already

I always love these shows with Martin, the insight and stories are great. One "Problem Chid" that comes to my mind is Steven Pearcy of Ratt, what an ego and the shenanigans he pulled. I know he was banned from the KNAC radio station studio because he trashed it a couple of times in the 80's.
Viv Prince, drummer of the Pretty Things was very troubled soul ,but was charismatic , also a talent ,a similar musician was Keith Moon of the Who, again a drummer.
David Coverdale comes to mind, you mentioned Sykes and Hughes, but how many line up's has Whitesnake had? With Coverdale being the common denominator here.
Pink Floyd, although career wise it benefited them it is such a sad story, Syd was seen as a problem due to eccentric and detrimental behaviour to himself and the band. They were forced to distance themselves from Syd and with more mental health awareness it is a story that could have ended differently.
It could have ended differently, but I don't think there is any way that Syd could have gone forward as the main songwriter of the band for the next 10 plus years. I'm a 25 year mental health professional and know a good bit about psychopharmacology. Unfortunately the medications that effectively control the psychotic symptoms that Syd was experiencing also dull the creative process and ability to experience enjoyment. This was particularly true with the first generation of antipsychotics which were available at the time.
Brian Wilson and SB had similar mental problems. Both went reclusive. BUT BW met doctor Landis who saved him. Really. BW and his family have dissed Landis a lot BUT the guy saved Brian`s life. Syd never found his Landis.
Glenn Hughes was a great pick. Really like after his turn around how great he was on the Tony Iommi solo albums 1996 DEP Sessions and Fused; really wish they'd do something again... Dead Daisies is good, but it doesn't scratch that doomy itch that Iommi/Hughes does.
Fused is a great record. Saw a great review in the NY Post back then that made me get it. Excellent stuff. Bought the DEP sessions after and they were my first intro to Glenn Hughes. Guy has some pipes!

Love the comments about Bruce Dickinson and his solo works... all (except maybe Tattooed Millionaire) fantastic recordings that are somewhat overlooked. At the time Maiden had stagnated, Bruce put out some fantastic work.
Richie Blackmore played on a lot of sessions for singles in the 1960's (same as Jimmy Page) and so that background of playing with lots of different musicians for very short periods of time might just have been what he was used to and he treated other members of 'his' band as disposable session type players.
I saw Whitesnake in Nottinham and John Sykes had a problem with his pedal board , his roadie crawled across the stage to try and fix it and he just kicked him , I was shocked and I have never thought Sykes was a good human since.

Axl Rose is the ultimate problem. Over 10 years to do Chinese Democracy, been over 10 years since that has come out. And he has no urge it seems to release more music. Meanwhile Slash and Duff release album after album.
It's true that no one talks about the late 90's and early 00's material from Michael Schenker but I think some should. I will.. Right now! The electric instrumental album "Adventures of the Imagination" and the acoustic albums "Thank You 2, 3 and 4" (three different albums) by Michael Schenker are to me terrific albums from the early 00's. I would rank all of them quite high!
I think of the Eagles thing with Henley & Frey. Felder had some choice words over the years about those 2 heavy handed dictators. Not sure who was really the “problem child/ s”? Kudos to band members who were incredible musicians and had some problems and are still here today living. A new wake up call or some call it "Red Pilled or Born Again"... Just because some folks figured out themselves later on does not make them not as "So Cool" back then. I admire people that have figured out some things and can have a new path in life. We lost so many great souls in the past. So many musicians obviously in their 20's. The whole 27 year old ditty. Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Cobain, etc... Looking back at all of this, we are now under full disclosure type of phase where the general public are wondering what in the frigg is going on today? Why does the President of the United States look so different than he did in the past? How did he become the POTUS in the first place. The guy only got about 15 people attending his rallies while the other side had packed Stadiums? Perhaps we are witnessing some major changes in the Timeline Shift here? I think so. Buckle up. Music is so important where this ship is heading. We are avoiding a non-sensical new Civil War but a new Revolutionary War without much violence on the surface. Much of this is being done behind "Closed Doors". We are living in an Information War. Spiritual War, Frequency War, Biblical War, etc. All is good. All we have to do is be more than 51% Service to others and not more than 51% Service to Self. Treat others how you want to be treated. I do not want to talk about this in this Comment section but we are stuck in this Paradox because 70% of the population just do not want to wake up to reality here. All we need is another 10% to acknowledge that this is Really going on and happening. All INFLATION and stupid Taxed will come to a screeching halt immediately. Housing, Banking, Loans, Debt, Stress will all Stop and we will have a new renaissance once the common folk realize that all of this is a FRAUD. Washington DC has been shut down for more than 2 years. All Fakery and so called leaders carrying on wearing "Rubber Masks" and pretending. Most of what is going on is with Computer Graphics and CGI. Turn off your TV sets and wake up to REALITY again. I love this channel. This channel is REAL I am tired of living in fake land and going to my grocery and downtown restaurants and being sucked into the FAKE REALITY that just does not EXIST anymore. Waters seemed to become more gloomy and cynical from the mid 70s onwards, when the band became so huge- and also more egotistical. Waters’ had the most complex reaction to the band’s fame (and burden of expectation). His neuroses are well documented in the Wall, I think.

Not a band member, but Sharon Osborne would interfere with Ozzy’s band members. Often firing band members or withholding pay. She may have changed the direction of Ozzy’s career.
British metal fans may remember the bizarre moment when Sean Harris came on stage dressed as the grim reaper at the band's support slot with Metallica at Milton Keynes in '93. He said something like "Yeah, you like a bit of the grim reaper don't you?" and 60,000 people thought "What the hell are you doing?"
Ted Nugent has been on record many times as of late about feeling "Comfortably Numb" too much to realize what is really at stake for our species and aside from politics is a much BIGGER and LARGER issue at hand here. Most people want to run away from these topics but if you have children or grandchildren then eventually you may want to hear and listen to what is going on here. I think lots of bands were making a statement and trying to state this mindset hoping to help out the state we are all living through right now. Much of that obviously has helped. The time is now for the Rest of Us to stop all of this insane movement that does not involve a Pro Human future moving forward. We cannot have people that work for We the People making billions and eventually trillions of dollars moving our species into a future where we just forget about so many great souls. My top 5 "problem child" list (in no particular order)... 1. Sebastian Bach's prima donna antics which caused him to get booted from Skid Row. 2. Vinnie Vincent's shady behavior with Kiss, causing him to sue the band multiple times and lose every time. 3. Vito Bratta's steadfast refusal to participate in a White Lion reunion for reasons unknown. 4. Ritchie Blackmore being an asshole by all accounts, and I'm sure Deep Purple is glad he's not in the band! 5. Vivian Campbell biting the hand that fed him and being a dick to his former employer Ronnie James Dio.
Love this series with Martin. The only contrary thought for me is it seems to be to Deep Purple heavy. A lot of the content features Blackmore and company. I think it would be more interesting if Pete would branch off a little more
What band DOESN'T have problems regarding getting along...at the very least, egos clashing regarding songwriting, who will be the " face " of the band, who is the " real creative force ", in bands with more than one singer, who's the primary lead, bands with more than one guitarist, who is the " lead " guitarist, etc.
Not something you saw with Led Zep. Everyone seemed to be as one. Yes it was Page's band and he produced the albums but he couldn't get a better drummer,singer,bass player.
The Chemical Wedding is the best Maiden related record since Somewhere in Time. I agree Adrian needs to be part of the band, but I've generally been underwhelmed with Bruce Mach II.

Actually Barret and Waters never were buddies. Waters lead the band from day one BUT someone (probably Mason) suggested take Syd to play guitar and suddenly SB overshadowed all others. It annoyed Waters as the real leader a lot. He was never Syd`s friend. Mason and Wright were, also Dave but not Roger.
I have to correct some of you here. Waters and Barrett were childhood friends and went to school together. Waters knew him before any other member of Pink Floyd. Where I will delve into speculation as you all have done, is that perhaps Waters found the changes and deterioration in Barrett harder to deal with than the others, and he didn’t want to have to handle it as closely as his bandmates. Instead he wrote songs about it.
Yes you are right, but Waters never liked Piper....and when Syd began acting strange, he wanted him to leave, so one day they just didn't pick him up, going to a gig

A curtain of melancholy has covered this episode - no fault of Pete or Martin, of course - but we lost David Longdon, a major talent and a vital component of England's BIG BIG TRAIN, just days ago, due of all things to a tragic household accident. David is a figure who is currently an acquired taste among the knowledgeable few - though sadly, that is going to change in the days ahead, as a number of folks yet unaware of David and BBT are about to become far better acquainted, many through a curtain of tears. A great talent, and a great band, and though he is now gone, his final recordings have yet to be released.....though even if they already had, between his heartbroken fans, and those music lovers about to become acquainted with his wonderful work, David's work will live on in ever-widening concentric circles every time a stylus touches vinyl, or someone presses play on a cd. My apologies for indulging in such facile clichés, but as a Yank who only knew his work, and not the man, I can only strongly recommend his fans - and interested parties who never quite took the plunge - to dive in now; the water's wonderful. RIP and affectionate thoughts and prayers to his loved ones & bandmates. Back to you, Pete and Martin.

Didn't he blow up a hotel room too after the other guests complained about him making too much noise?

Hughes is a living legend, been down and out and to this day still sounds amazing and looks to be in great shape for a man of 70 years old.

When I was 12 or 13 years old, my favorite uncle moved me and showed me Animals by Pink Floyd. That Album may not be their best ever but in my mind is top 3 ever in their discography. Just amazing top to bottom. The whole album is so incredible. All of the players doing just insane things and it all comes together with this Wall of Sound. I know that stoners and acid/ mushroom trippers love all of this but you do not need any of that to absolutely love this record by Pink Floyd/Animals... What a beast of a record. Wish you were here, Dark side of the Moon. Just bang bang albums of the 1970's. Gilmore's tone is just on another planet level

As much as I love Roger Waters as an artist and a songwriter (Roger was really the main songwriter after Piper At The Gates of Dawn), I agree with Martin, Amused to Death is far and away the best Floyd solo album, However, I think Roger is a living breathing contraction. Any who has been married as many times as he has and seemingly can’t get along individuals should never be giving advice on how entire nations and millions of people should behave. I agree with you Pete. Rock musicians should not be giving advice in the world of politics when most have such chaotic private lives.
Your comment reminds me of Ricky Gervais at the 2020 Golden Globes. ok, I'll talk your word for it, but I have always thought that he was the glue that kept the original band professional and heading in the right direction. The leader of the band. On the other hand Allen Collins always seemed more of a wild out of control member, in my opinion.

The John Sykes thing is really weird. Way back in about 1978 before Tygers even, I wouldn’t say he was a friend but our paths crossed socially and with his then band Streetfighter a few times. He was a really laid back and friendly bloke ,but ambitious person that just seemed to enjoy playing and writing. Obviously that was 43 years ago and we all change but I don’t recognise this version of Sykes that is so reluctant to get his music out there and be playing live.
He seems like he didn’t care for the process after a while. Perfectionism snares another troubled legend.

John Sykes must be in his 60s , he's old enough to retire from music. He recorded 2 albums with Tygers of Pantang in 1981 , he joined Thin Lizzy the following year, recorded 2 albums with Whitesnake, 1 being their best selling album. Blue Murder albums wound up in the bargain bin sections of your favorite Record Store, but still they were real major label albums. I would consider John Sykes more of a success in his own way than Guns n Roses who are still only remembered for 2 successful studio albums. A lot of musicians would be happy just to have been part of the NWOBHM movement, so give the guy a break already
John Sykes doesn't like the promotion side of music. I wouldn't label him a perfectionist, a bit of a control freak maybe.

I always love these shows with Martin, the insight and stories are great. One "Problem Chid" that comes to my mind is Steven Pearcy of Ratt, what an ego and the shenanigans he pulled. I know he was banned from the KNAC radio station studio because he trashed it a couple of times in the 80's.
Viv Prince, drummer of the Pretty Things was very troubled soul ,but was charismatic , also a talent ,a similar musician was Keith Moon of the Who, again a drummer.
David Coverdale comes to mind, you mentioned Sykes and Hughes, but how many line up's has Whitesnake had? With Coverdale being the common denominator here.
You are right on the money with Jim Morrison. The documentary on the Whiskey night club gives the real story on why they were fired.
Pink Floyd, although career wise it benefited them it is such a sad story, Syd was seen as a problem due to eccentric and detrimental behaviour to himself and the band. They were forced to distance themselves from Syd and with more mental health awareness it is a story that could have ended differently.
It could have ended differently, but I don't think there is any way that Syd could have gone forward as the main songwriter of the band for the next 10 plus years. I'm a 25 year mental health professional and know a good bit about psychopharmacology. Unfortunately the medications that effectively control the psychotic symptoms that Syd was experiencing also dull the creative process and ability to experience enjoyment. This was particularly true with the first generation of antipsychotics which were available at the time.

Brian Wilson and SB had similar mental problems. Both went reclusive. BUT BW met doctor Landis who saved him. Really. BW and his family have dissed Landis a lot BUT the guy saved Brian`s life. Syd never found his Landis.
Glenn Hughes was a great pick. Really like after his turn around how great he was on the Tony Iommi solo albums 1996 DEP Sessions and Fused; really wish they'd do something again... Dead Daisies is good, but it doesn't scratch that doomy itch that Iommi/Hughes does.
I love the Dead Daisies album he did, but the DEP sessions is my favorite album Glenn has ever been a part of.
Fused is a great record. Saw a great review in the NY Post back then that made me get it. Excellent stuff. Bought the DEP sessions after and they were my first intro to Glenn Hughes. Guy has some pipes!

Love the comments about Bruce Dickinson and his solo works... all (except maybe Tattooed Millionaire) fantastic recordings that are somewhat overlooked. At the time Maiden had stagnated, Bruce put out some fantastic work.
I saw both Diamond Head and John Sykes in the early 80's, both should have been huge but just disappeared...
Richie Blackmore played on a lot of sessions for singles in the 1960's (same as Jimmy Page) and so that background of playing with lots of different musicians for very short periods of time might just have been what he was used to and he treated other members of 'his' band as disposable session type players.

I saw Whitesnake in Nottinham and John Sykes had a problem with his pedal board , his roadie crawled across the stage to try and fix it and he just kicked him , I was shocked and I have never thought Sykes was a good human since.

Axl Rose is the ultimate problem. Over 10 years to do Chinese Democracy, been over 10 years since that has come out. And he has no urge it seems to release more music. Meanwhile Slash and Duff release album after album.

The electric instrumental album "Adventures of the Imagination" and the acoustic albums "Thank You 2, 3 and 4" (three different albums) by Michael Schenker are to me terrific albums from the early 00's. I would rank all of them quite high!

Very interesting topic guys. One that you didn't touch on who really isn't a household name but definitely big trouble is Vinnie Vincent.
Kudos to band members who were incredible musicians and had some problems and are still here today living. A new wake up call or some call it "Red Pilled or Born Again"... Just because some folks figured out themselves later on does not make them not as "So Cool" back then. I admire people that have figured out some things and can have a new path in life. We lost so many great souls in the past. So many musicians obviously in their 20's. The whole 27 year old ditty. Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Cobain, etc... Looking back at all of this, we are now under full disclosure type of phase where the general public are wondering what in the frigg is going on today? Why does the President of the United States look so different than he did in the past? How did he become the POTUS in the first place. The guy only got about 15 people attending his rallies while the other side had packed Stadiums? Perhaps we are witnessing some major changes in the Timeline Shift here? I think so. Buckle up. Music is so important where this ship is heading. We are avoiding a non-sensical new Civil War but a new Revolutionary War without much violence on the surface. Much of this is being done behind "Closed Doors". We are living in an Information War. Spiritual War, Frequency War, Biblical War, etc. All is good. All we have to do is be more than 51% Service to others and not more than 51% Service to Self. Treat others how you want to be treated. I do not want to talk about this in this Comment section but we are stuck in this Paradox because 70% of the population just do not want to wake up to reality here. All we need is another 10% to acknowledge that this is Really going on and happening. All INFLATION and stupid Taxed will come to a screeching halt immediately. Housing, Banking, Loans, Debt, Stress will all Stop and we will have a new renaissance once the common folk realize that all of this is a FRAUD. Washington DC has been shut down for more than 2 years. All Fakery and so called leaders carrying on wearing "Rubber Masks" and pretending. Most of what is going on is with Computer Graphics and CGI. Turn off your TV sets and wake up to REALITY again. I love this channel. This channel is REAL I am tired of living in fake land and going to my grocery and downtown restaurants and being sucked into the FAKE REALITY that just does not EXIST anymore. Rick, David, and Nick were all together on the same page. Rogers ego, and vision, was very different.
Waters seemed to become more gloomy and cynical from the mid 70s onwards, when the band became so huge- and also more egotistical. Waters’ had the most complex reaction to the band’s fame (and burden of expectation). His neuroses are well documented in the Wall, I think.

It's a real shame that Ted Nugent and Derek St. Holmes couldn't each have dialed their egos down just a few ticks, because they were such a great combo.
They did tour together a few yrs ago and the magic was still there.

Not a band member, but Sharon Osborne would interfere with Ozzy’s band members. Often firing band members or withholding pay. She may have changed the direction of Ozzy’s career.
British metal fans may remember the bizarre moment when Sean Harris came on stage dressed as the grim reaper at the band's support slot with Metallica at Milton Keynes in '93. He said something like "Yeah, you like a bit of the grim reaper don't you?" and 60,000 people thought "What the hell are you doing?"
Ted Nugent has been on record many times as of late about feeling "Comfortably Numb" too much to realize what is really at stake for our species and aside from politics is a much BIGGER and LARGER issue at hand here. Most people want to run away from these topics but if you have children or grandchildren then eventually you may want to hear and listen to what is going on here. I think lots of bands were making a statement and trying to state this mindset hoping to help out the state we are all living through right now. Much of that obviously has helped. The time is now for the Rest of Us to stop all of this insane movement that does not involve a Pro Human future moving forward. We cannot have people that work for We the People making billions and eventually trillions of dollars moving our species into a future where we just forget about so many great souls. My top 5 "problem child" list (in no particular order)...
1. Sebastian Bach's prima donna antics which caused him to get booted from Skid Row.
2. Vinnie Vincent's shady behavior with Kiss, causing him to sue the band multiple times and lose every time.
3. Vito Bratta's steadfast refusal to participate in a White Lion reunion for reasons unknown.
4. Ritchie Blackmore being an asshole by all accounts, and I'm sure Deep Purple is glad he's not in the band!
5. Vivian Campbell biting the hand that fed him and being a dick to his former employer Ronnie James Dio.

Love this series with Martin. The only contrary thought for me is it seems to be to Deep Purple heavy. A lot of the content features Blackmore and company. I think it would be more interesting if Pete would branch off a little more

What band DOESN'T have problems regarding getting along...at the very least, egos clashing regarding songwriting, who will be the " face " of the band, who is the " real creative force ", in bands with more than one singer, who's the primary lead, bands with more than one guitarist, who is the " lead " guitarist, etc.
Not something you saw with Led Zep. Everyone seemed to be as one. Yes it was Page's band and he produced the albums but he couldn't get a better drummer,singer,bass player.

Actually Barret and Waters never were buddies. Waters lead the band from day one BUT someone (probably Mason) suggested take Syd to play guitar and suddenly SB overshadowed all others. It annoyed Waters as the real leader a lot. He was never Syd`s friend. Mason and Wright were, also Dave but not Roger.
But later....Waters regretted what he did, and made Wish you were Here
I have to correct some of you here. Waters and Barrett were childhood friends and went to school together. Waters knew him before any other member of Pink Floyd. Where I will delve into speculation as you all have done, is that perhaps Waters found the changes and deterioration in Barrett harder to deal with than the others, and he didn’t want to have to handle it as closely as his bandmates. Instead he wrote songs about it.
Yes you are right, but Waters never liked Piper....and when Syd began acting strange, he wanted him to leave, so one day they just didn't pick him up, going to a gig

A curtain of melancholy has covered this episode - no fault of Pete or Martin, of course - but we lost David Longdon, a major talent and a vital component of England's BIG BIG TRAIN, just days ago, due of all things to a tragic household accident.
David is a figure who is currently an acquired taste among the knowledgeable few - though sadly, that is going to change in the days ahead, as a number of folks yet unaware of David and BBT are about to become far better acquainted, many through a curtain of tears. A great talent, and a great band, and though he is now gone, his final recordings have yet to be released.....though even if they already had, between his heartbroken fans, and those music lovers about to become acquainted with his wonderful work, David's work will live on in ever-widening concentric circles every time a stylus touches vinyl, or someone presses play on a cd.
My apologies for indulging in such facile clichés, but as a Yank who only knew his work, and not the man, I can only strongly recommend his fans - and interested parties who never quite took the plunge - to dive in now; the water's wonderful. RIP and affectionate thoughts and prayers to his loved ones & bandmates.

I went to a Nicko McBrain drum clinic in the 90s and he went off on a rant about Bruce, and swore so much in front of a number of small children, to the point it was so embarrassing, with everyone looking at their feet.
