Why Tesla Wants You to Build Its EV Chargers

  • Could Tesla’s charger ever be crowned the U.S. standard for EV charging?
Tesla has released the blueprints for its super-popular charging connector and named it the “North American Charging Standard,” or NACS. The idea is that any company could now place a Tesla port on their EV. But car manufacturers like Ford and Rivian use a different charging standard - CCS.
As the Biden Administration pushes to standardize EV charging across America, which standard will win? I explore what Tesla’s move means for automakers and EV chargers across America.

I don't understand why this video wouldn't go over the pros and cons? You're just telling people Tesla is looking for the govt money, which could be correct, but shouldn't we choose the best adapter for consumers? You didn't educate us whatsoever on which port may be the best one. Kind of a useless video that only says "US is looking for a standard" and "Tesla only open sourced theirs for money to expand".

I'd posit that it's more logical to convert all Tesla's to CCS. Sure Tesla owns 68% (but falling) market share in the US, but it's dwarfed by other EVs in the rest of the world (less than 10% in Worldwide). Why not all convert to the same standard? CCS is about 30% of worldwide market share, and the Chinese one is probably about 40%. Just because it would cost less to convert to NACS in the US doesn't mean it's the right decision

Fast forward to now and most of the large automakers have pledged to do just that. All of the US manufacturers have pledged to by 2025, as well as several international ones. And this is a good thing because while many non-NACS chargers are known for having issues, Tesla stations are significantly more reliable. One thing is for sure: Tesla is going to make a BOATLOAD of money from this.

The technology of the batteries that power EVs is evolving very quickly. New ones will have much greater capacity, and may not even use lithium, an element too explosively and uncontrollably inflammable to be used for very much longer in hundreds of millions of EVs across the world. The probability is that neither of these two charging connectors will be in use beyond a decade from now. Rather, they're both likely to become irrelevant as prospective owners of EVs increasingly demand that manufacturers of EVs replace the current, already-outmoded - and time-wasting - EV charging station setup. In typical WSJ/New York Times fashion, this presentation obfuscates rather than informs in depth. A venerable maxim in the U.S. financial industry has it that "those who talk, don't know, and those who know, don't talk." The actual reason many - if not most - people build careers on Wall Street is to obtain timely (but legal) insider knowledge - knowledge which makes fast money. Moreover, as a 30-years-long reader of the WSJ, I've never found this venerable newspaper to have predicted a single important technological development. This video presents a false dilemma engendered by what used to be known as a "pseudo-problem"- loosely speaking, a problem that arises from distorted verbal constructs - "problems" that vanish as soon as we see through the foggy verbiage that conceals "non-problems." In this instance, the pseudo-problem is a putative struggle for preeminence between two already-obsolete technologies and their backers as to which of two competing charging connectors will win out as a permanent presence at charging stations across the U.S.
