WSJ’s Joanna Stern put three of the leading car options to the test on a road trip and then leased the best one. She also called MKBHD for some advice.

Hats off to early adopters of EV's. I consistently annoy them by referring to them as beta testers. But honestly at this point if you are an EV owner, you truly are a beta tester as technologies and standards are still rapidly evolving. There is nothing wrong with owning an EV at this point and they are rapidly maturing but they still stand to mature much more over the next 5 years.

Fun video. Wish she'd gone a little more in depth on some of the functionality, specifically with infotainment. If you count carplay as part of it, I actually prefer the Ioniq's infotainment to tesla model y or 3 (much easier to control climate, and having dual screens is a huge plus). Also, it's easy to set the carplay to go full screen, which would have alleviated her main issue with it.

No offense or anything, but she obviously has no idea what she's talking about. We don't know why she ruled the other 2 EV at the beginning (the EV6 and the Ioniq 5 are basically the same car), or why they went on a track since there's no test of the 3 cars in this video although "they had used them at the track a lot". It really feel like it was put together and filmed last minute, without any serious test or even a script in mind, although she said she searched the best car for two months! What about cargo space (and the frunk), space for the passengers, comfort, options if any, the different features, reliability, the price of charging the cars (since they don't have the same battery and consumption)... This video is a joke.

That's a mistake. The Model Y is a much better car. When she took over on the highway when it was doing the exit she was just scared. If you are looking at the screen it is clear the car was going to take the exit, she took over after she was on the offramp. I don't know how "Lane Change Unavailable" is a comforting message. Literally means the car doesn't feel confident enough when it is clearly safe to change lanes. Points to its unreliability. Also, 2-3 times a year of supercharging for 6+ hours at a time? + I don't think already built cars are even compatible with the future transition to Tesla Chargers.

@@tooltalk counterpoint . LFP batteries seem to stabilize at around the 90% health mark , as opposed to the traditional battery chemistries which don’t really stabilize until ~80%. Also, LFP has a much higher cycle life, ~5000 cycles as opposed to ~1500. These numbers are estimates but you get the general idea. I knew the pros and cons when I got my car, and paying an extra $15,000 wasn’t worth it for the long range, which was range I wouldn’t realistically use for probably 90% of miles driven over the lifetime of the car

This is a poor review, slick, but poor, because it omits far too many important facts. Most important, there is no discussion of Battery Chemistry, in particular the safety of the chemistry used, particularly the topical issue whether the different cars have a greater or lesser propensity to catch fire and burn uncontrollably. Secondly, it is worth mentioning that the Ford is $15,000 cheaper than the Tesla. Third, the mapping in the Tesla is far superior on all roads. Fourth, why were the Kia and VW excluded from any consideration at all without comment? Is there any reason why they were omitted that we should know?
The most interesting fact about EV's at present is that Chinese manufacturers are producing a sophisticated range of EV's now selling for between US$15,000 and US$35,000. Even if one considers the former administration's 27% import duty, they will still scare US manufacturers. Look at the MG4 or the BYD - Dolphin or Atto3. The manufacturers considered in this WSJ presentation will be looking over their shoulders.
The reviewer was dead right on one issue, lease instead of buy - it will save her from expensive error.

There is *no way* I would ever want to drive for that long in a Tesla, because it just isn't that comfortable.
