    Janalla Knickerbocker Most of the time a 50-75 gallon sump would be fine but I would recommend the biggest sump you can fit under the stand for a few reasons. 1. Sump can handle all overflow if power goes out. This prevents flooding. 2. Higher flow with now air bubbles. 3. Bigger tanks use bigger outflows and skimmers so you need more space so you can get the best equpment. I would recommend overkill on a sump all day. Good luck with the tank sounds awesome.

    so glad you mentioned about the nitrates being at 40ppm. I have two tanks, one being a reef tank and the other being a shark tank (only have a banded cat and a volitans lionfish in it for now,) but no matter how much i play with the filter media and even if I do loads of water changes the shark tank just won't drop under 30ppm.. makes me feel better since you seem to successfully keep all those at that level.

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  10 років тому +1

      Yes. Sharks are very dirty and I personally have never seen anyone with nitrates below 20 ppm with an established shark tank. I have heard about it but never scene it. I probably have over $8,000.00 underneath my tank I change around 13-16% water every week and if that wont do it nothing will. I have succesfully kept starfish, duncan and mushroom corals with no issues. I would not worry about anything under 80ppm.

    I have a 10x3 foot 30 inch tall aquarium. Around 600 gallons without the sump.
    Ive had many species of sharks. But this is my first ciral catshark. Pics and gids dont do these guys justice. sSunningly heaitiful in real life. Very oretty colors.
    Mine is very lazy compared to my bamboos and hound sharks.
    Only active wt night as you stated.

If you could make a video on the best way to do a water change to keep the shock minimal / replenish trace minerals and stuff that would help me a ton. @leon Jeffries. Blue spotted ray would be fine. No issues there. The ribbon eel would be very difficult. Ribbon eels are delicate already and adding to the mix of having to feed along side a coral catshark would make it worse. Corals are aggressive feeders. Corals can handle twice a week but they would prefer three times a week. One of the few sharks with that feeding schedule.

      I usually feed mine a good bit. I am not sure of the size of yours but I would feed him around 3-5% of his body weight. If it is a pup it would be slightly higher. You can even get away with feeding pups daily if you target feed them.

    In terms of items in the tank with coral cat sharks such as live rock and things to hid under, is there reasons that they can not have artificial caves that you would find at a pet store ? Would they eat it? Or are there chemicals in the decors and fake coral that would effect them?

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  Рік тому +1

      They can have them. You just want to make sure that they are not going to be a problem for the water quality or damage the shark in any way. Whatever you put in there will mostly likely be flipped around all over the place in the end though.

  • @yas72090
    @yas72090 10 років тому

    Yes I agree, I have a very small space the footprint may be to large for the 240 but I also run chemi pure/ purigen as well. It's funny I got the banded eel off someone saying it was a zebra eel but I noticed the facial structure it's actually called a banded eel looks very similar but it's actually a different species pretty docile and small. I haven't washed the bioballs since the tank has been up a month ago

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  10 років тому

      If the tank has only been up for a month then the bio balls should be fine. I imagine that your main problem is the tank starting to settle in. If it is a month old then you may need to allow the tank time to stabablize. Ah I have always referred to those as the Barred moray eel. Great species. I used to run chemi pure and I currently run purigen. Both are great products. I would try a few things and all of these helped to lower my nitrates. For the first 10 months my tank was up it was a nightmare but after all these adjustments. Everything stabalized and I currently run from 20 to 60 depending on feedings and such.
      1. Get some seachem matrix. Get rid of the bio balls
      2. If the aqua c skimmer (240) is to big I would go with something that can do twice the water volume of the display tank per hour.
      3. I would also do a water change at least every two weeks like clockwork. I currently do about a 15% water change every week. But I could go to every other week with no issues but I just like to make sure everything stays in check.
      4. Make sure you change your filter floss every three days at the very latest. I would highly recomend every two days. This will help more than you know.
      5. Are your nitrites high at all. I would check that. If so then may be able to just let it settle down and the nitrates may drop on there own. This is only of course if the tank has stabablized enough.
      In closing.
      Consistent water changes. Seachem Matrix. Change floss regularly

    • @yas72090
      @yas72090 10 років тому

      Shark Husbandry Network thanks!!! so yeah since i did a breakdown from the old tank i used the same water about 120g and i ran a big sump whereas the eshopps only holds about 20 gallons so i actually had about 150-160 gallons of water give or take a 10 gallons so so far i have not really experienced any type of cycle at all. if i can fit a 240 that would help and yeah i only change the floss every 4-5 days i use the pond filter pads so ill change that to every 2 days. i actually saw the seachem matrix today it says to use a tray? i guess on top of the bioballs i presume or replace bioballs completely? im in NY and during the winter since i dont have ro/di its hell on earth to do water changes, so im working on getting more consistent with that. i know sharks are dirty fish but after replacing the lion/angel/2wrasse/2triggers i think that bioload would be much bigger than one shark. these triggers and wrasses are really a-holes lol and pains with territory and dirty feeding (hes spits the food right into the overflowbox) so hopefully that would lessen the bioload. i just really dont want to have to get external pumps etc cause of $$$ lol but i really want to try this matrix.. i have been impressed with seachems products so i think it will help alot.

    Hey so I got my coral catshark yesterday and I noticed that he took literally the smallest tiniest bites of a piece of frozen shrimp on the first day and he hasnt eaten since then almost a day and a half later. Is this because hes so tiny (he is about 7 inches) or is it because he doesnt feel like eating due to his new environment? If so how can I get him to start eating? All he does is move from one corner to the other and just chill.

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  4 роки тому +1

      I would let him settle in for a day or so. Then if all the parameters are good in the water. You should be able to feed him pretty easy. If he is hungry then just the sent off food will get him moving.

    Interesting that you said Puffers. We've had 2 puffers in my tank with my banded cat for almost 3 years with no issues. I also feed more than recommended which is probably why its worked. Question, my dad is upgrading his tank this next month to something probably in 500-600 gal range, and I want to surprise him with a Dragon Eel for Christmas, would you still advise against this? Thoughts?

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  7 років тому

      MerfolkMTG eels such as the Tess or green moray can be hit or miss. Can't go wrong with a zebra but golden and dragon I have seen many times housed with sharks. They need to be about the same size to keep them from trying each other but would advise with caution. They can typically get along ok together but keep and eye on them.

    Very well made video. I own an aquarium store and just had one of these to hatch (on Father's Day actually). I haven't had one in years, but I'm aware of the general care with them. Do you generally feed them at night when they're young? I'm wanting to get this one eating. It's in a 75 gallon tank by itself, but the system itself is 400 gallons, skimmed, and not heavily stocked at all. I chopped up some frozen silversides and put them in there one night, but couldn't tell if the shark showed any interest. I have some frozen squid I was thinking of trying. Any tips on feeding would be appreciated. Thanks.

There are a few others that are smaller but could much more costly due to needing a chiller and herder to keep. Hallstrom'se bamboo shark. Those are hard to find but stay small. They are harder to keep as well.

    just got a week and a half old hatched banded cat shark pup. He's been in my tank for two nights. I went today to my local store and got fresh small squid and tryed to get him to eat some small pieces but no luck. he swims good at night and also is alert. the local fish store said he had ate some squid but not sure. how long should I wait before worring that he might starve? and what size food bits should I try? thanks for posting your videos most informational.

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  8 років тому

      Most hatchlings won't eat at all for seven to eight days. So I would be weary of him actually at the store before you got him if you just got him. It's not impossible but unlikely. I would try krill shrimp at night and give him enough to swallow in one bite. The krill should get him going. Naldo check the temp on your tank. If it's high 70's then he should eat any day now. It can be hit or miss with hatchlings but worth the shot. I have had the best luck with krill. Do it without any vitamins at first and then you can start soaking in a few weeks.

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  8 років тому +1

      Also. A newly hatched shark getting acclimated can fast for a few weeks so don't worry. It's also best to wait about 10 days or so before feeding a hatchling because it can damage the stomach. These little guys can generally go almost a month without eating. Let me know how it goes.

    I have a 6x2x2 with triggers tangs eel angelfish and lionfish, down the road I'm gonna take them out and center my tank around a coral cat shark... I wanted an epaulette but because of size restraints when I upgrade I'll look into it. My biggest problem with my fowlr is nitrate. Right now I'm probably at 140ish I haven't tested in a while and am about to do 15 percent change but my fish don't seem bothered by it AT ALL. That being said I'm still trying to lower it as much as I can reasonably. It was always hard for me to find info so thanks. I always hear sharks need pristine water but from my experience and things I have read I don't believe nitrates really affect any types of aggressive fish at all maybe some degree long term but I haven't seen it yet. How good are they at rearranging rock I have rock placed in the middle so fish can swim in circles with some caves but I definitely don't want an avalanche since my sand bed isn't deep

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  10 років тому

      Well a water change is a good way to start but remember a 15% water change will only be around 27 gallons in your tank. I have seen fowlr tanks thrive with those nitrates but it would be best to get them down to a more managable level. I need some info from you first. I have a few questions. What kind of filtration are you using. Skimmer, sump style ect... How many times is your water turning over per hour? How many pounds of live sand? How many lbs of live rock? Do you use bio balls? How many times do you change your water per month and how much do you change? Lets start with these and see if we can figure it out.

      yas72090 Eshopps makes a good filter system. I would reccomend a couple of things.
      1. I would replace the bio balls with Seachem Matrix.
      2. The rock and sand is fine.
      3. You could keep the wrasse but the angels and trigger would need to go.
      4. I assume by banded eel you are refering to a Zebra Eel. If so that is fine.
      5. The lion is risky but should be fine.
      6. You need to turn your water over more. With the amount of distance (I am estimating) you are losing around 250 gph of filtration rate and that would place mean that your complete system is turnin over about 5x's per hour with a mag 12. It really needs to be closer to 10x's per hour. This would really help.
      7. I did not see anything about your skimmer. What type of skimmer do you have currently running?
      8. Also. How long have you been running those bio balls since the last time you cleaned them. (Pulled them and cleaned the sump)

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  10 років тому

      yas72090 my bad. Aqua c skimmer. Great skimmer . If the footprint will fit I would go with the Aqua c 240. If you have the height available. That would give you 1.5 times the skimming power. Normally I would recommend twice the skimming power with sharks. But I am very partial to Aquac skimmers. If you went with the 240 then you could run it with your mag 12 and only have to buy one pump for the tank to incrase the turn rate.

    Question -- i have a saltwater tank with triggers and snowflake eels had over 20 years its 75 gallon tank -- I have a 200 gallon tank im setting up to have some sharks -my question to you is what is the best filtration for sharks and rays - im not talking big sharks just a small bamboo shark and a ray is my goal- please let me know bcz i have been tryinng to find info out but its limited so i might as well ask you the pro at this - Thanks in advance

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  2 роки тому

      Thanks for the question. 200 gallons will be tough but it is doable. I would definitely only have one if the two in the tank. The bio load will be really high no matter but two of those in the tank at the same time would be difficult. The bamboo would need to be a male because they are smaller. I would recommend a large sump with enough flow to move two thousand gallons an hour. I level micron filleted with some additives like pyrogen and activated carbon. The skimmer needs to be a 500gallon skimmer rating. Even with that you will still need to do water changes of 10-20% bi weekly. But that should do it.

      OMG your the best thanks for the reply -- im so taking your advise on only one bamboo shark -instead of 2-- so if im only getting one bamboo i think i might get a sting ray or bumble bee grouper - I love the big agrressive fish i know the grouper will get pig like 6ft but by then i will have a indoor pool pnd set up - once i figure out the filtration -- i have a salt tank with a snowflake eel and marron clown and a niger trigger they all feed from my hand but sharks are my favorite animal and i eben have tattoos on me of a shark- i live in florida and catch shark all the time I WISH i could house a bull shark or black tip shark - but i could never afford that set up to keep those - do you have any videos of your filter system to give me an idea -- Thanks Again have a great weekend BTW im so jealous of your shark tank

    Hi. I figured I'd switch over to the more relevant video to post comments since I'm looking mostly at keeping sharks of this size range (the coral catshark being a leading contender).
    I'm interested in tankmates for a shark of this size. I've read through the posts and watched several of your videos. I remember you mentioned in one of the videos that you thought that your coral cat was responsible for attacks on your ray. How aggressive is the catshark family and what characteristics/behaviors does it make off limits when looking at a fish to be a possible tankmate to a coral cat? I've also seen you mention that triggers, puffers and angels are bad ideas. Unfortunately that pretty much wipes out my thought process as far as tankmates goes. I've always thought bigger was better until I heard/read that. What size would be too small to house with this species of shark? Any other families of fish I should avoid beyond the three mentioned above (someone mentioned tangs are a bad idea)? I'm looking at a 24-30" wide tank, so I think I would be okay with fish up to 18-24" depending on the tank width.
    Sorry to keep throwing questions at you. You've been the first shark owner I've talked with that would will give me the light of day after hearing I've never owned sharks before. LOL

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  9 років тому

      My coral cat shark had an incident or two with a slight nip to the stingray. As far as tank mates go outside the realm of poppers angelfish and sugar fish you should be okay regardless of size. If you were dead set on a trigger the only triggerfish I would recommend is a crosshatch trigger or a blue Joe trigger. I've had both sharks and never had an issue with either one of them they're very mild-mannered. As far as tangs go they make excellent tank mates and you will never have an issue with the sharks way comes to tangs. Smaller fisher great such as clown fish squirrel fish damsels and chromis. Larger fish do great as well such as pilot fish that fish and other fish from the Jack family. I'm only had one fish eaten by my sharks ever. And I think it was just a fluke accident when one of the sharks got very hungry. Cool cat sharks tend to be a slightly more aggressive than other species of bamboo sharks. But they are not so aggressive that you would have to worry about them attacking any of your tank mates it can happen but it is a rarity. One piece advice that I can give that I know other people that house sharks do is make sure that the last animal a place in the tank is the shark. And keep them well fed. That being said it is an animal and you never know what it's going to do. They are all different. General rule of thumb is be more concerned about what the other fish can do to the shark not what the shark can do to the other fish.

    Hey man I'm looking at about a 210 gallon tank for a coral cat shark. Wondering if you think it is large enough. Also what type of rays for angelfish could I put with it? Thank you

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  10 років тому

      Off the top of my head a standard 210 gallon would be 6ft x 2ft x 2.5ft. If those are the measurements than it would be fine. I would have very minimal rockwork in that tank though just to give him enough space to move around. For a stingray I would recomend a yellow stingray or blue dot stingray. (Not the blue spotted ribon tail ray) They are hard to get to feed and take care of. They are a round shape the blue dot ray is a more diamond shape. Not as pretty but much easier to take care of. As far as angelfish do not ever put them with sharks or rays. they will nip and pick the eyes of them. Most triggerfish will do the same with the exception of a few species. If you are interested I can get you the names of those.

      A small species of ray would be better. The shark would fit but it would be tight. The issue u could have with either would be water quality. The coral is going to hammer any rock work that you do have so be prepared for that. I would recommend the stingray over the shark. The stingray would give u much more activity as well.

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  9 років тому

      Yes u can but it will be a tight fit. I'm assuming it would probably be somewhere around 60" x 18" x 24". The gallons are not as big of a deal as the actual space inside the tank. The main reason the gallons are important to me is because of the ease of keeping good water quality. Make sure you over filtrate the tank when The shark gets full-grown. Most people underestimate just how much waste these animals put off. They are very messy and without proper fill Traciann can really screw your water quality up fast. I would recommend a slightly larger tank because in the long run it will be better for the short and will make your life a whole lot easier. But what you're asking regarding the 140 gallon tank can be done. I would also recommend purchasing a mail over a female. The males tend to be a few inches shorter and a little less girth.

I am trying to figure out how to scape the rock work to provide enough hiding places for a rock beauty angel, 3 tangs, 3 butterflies, 2 clowns, and 3 chromis, and 2 other angels, without compromising the swimming space on the sand bed and not putting the sharks/rays in danger of falling rocks. In addition are saltwater plants really all that helpful with filtration?

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  9 років тому

      Saltwater plants are very helpful. Grape kelp is one of my favorites as it does not go sexual. The Sharks will eventually destroy whatever rock formation you put up. Sharks are nocturnal so whatever plant you get will need light and tons of light can stress the shark so I would recommend a refugium under the tank if possible. Not sure what type of angels you are wanting but I would avoid 95% of them with sharks and rays. Also be careful of puffer and trigger fish. Only blue jaw cross hatch and Niger trigger (with caution) are safe for sharks in the trigger family. I would try zip tying the rocks together. I have tried everything else and nothing really works. How big of a tank will two cat sharks need and how much will it cost? I'm about two mins in sorry if you already said that lol. (Also what about two bamboo shark tank for two of them how mush will it cost?)

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  7 років тому

      Doggo Bear coral cats will need around 300gal or more and white spotted bamboo will need around 400 or more. Cost would be about the same. Somewhere around 4K. Brown banded bamboos would need much larger.

      maurice moore I still have the same sand in my tank from the day I set it up. Not sure of the brand because it's been so long. I would recommend a live sand that is very fine. Make sure you cule it for some time and you should have no problems. Sorry but I hope this helps.

    If sharks like u say are nitrate release valves, just get an oversized refugium like one 20% of the total water volume with a super good grow light like a kessil h380 with chaetomorpha and indpcrease the photoperiod and light intensity of the light definitely will get rid of nitrates like 😜 crazy even of they are sharks well at least the nitrates will get to at most 10ppm see not impossible

    Could I keep a coral shark with a chain shark and or a bamboo shark I think I feel in love with them 😂

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  6 років тому

      Big Time 6 Man coral and bamboo would be fine. But the chain shark lives in an average of 57 degree waters. It’s a cold water shark and would need a chilled system. The tropical can’t handle that weather.

    What size aquarium should a epaulette shark be kept in

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  7 років тому

      drake smith I would recommend a 6x3x3 for a male and 6x4x3 for a female. That is the absolute minimum though. If it's an Australian they can get up to four feet. But do some looking around and u may find a different sub species of an eppie that do not get as large.

    What can I add to the food of the shark to be more appealing to it?

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  9 років тому

      I'm not sure of anything that the sharks would like better than the natural food. If they do not have a feeding response I would recommend checking all your water perams. What species is the shark.

    • @saavedra358
      @saavedra358 9 років тому

      It's a coral shark, new addition to the tank, parameters are good nitrate at 5.0, ph at 8.3, nitrite at 0, ammonia at 0, salt at 1.025. Recent water change, Right now I'm trying to feed him squid with vitamin. Lights have been off for about 3 days to let him settle in. He's about 9 to 11 inches long.

    • @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287
      @sharkhusbandrynetwork1287  9 років тому

      Try krill or silver slides. The slides are not the best as far as nutrients but they tend to like them so that should get him started. The krill should work as well. Valdosta try without vitamins and see if that increases the feeding response. Give him a day night cycle also and see if that does the trick.

      @saavedra358 9 років тому

      Thanx, will do the day night cycle starting tomorrow, I'll get the silversides and give them a try, is it possible to tell the difference between male and female being this young?

      +scorlin gonzalez a coral cat is going to outgrow that very fast. Probably in six months. You need something at least four to five feet long by two or three feet wide.
