I assure you that fried shrimp isn’t gooey inside. Proper cooked shrimp is tender crisp with a “teary” texture as you call it. If you get gooey shrimp they didn’t cook it right. In fact they obliterated it if it’s gooey or mushy 😂😂
'Chile I didn't even know shrimp could be gooey, lmao!
100%. Shrimp should be snappy
I think the only way shrimp could be gooey is if it's undercooked. Overcooked shrimp is rubbery and chewy
Facts
Shrimp is my favorite treat to have when going out. I'm crazy about it made any and all ways. I'd make Forests buddy Bubba proud. When he lists off all those ways to make shrimp in the movie, all I can think is "yum".
Gumbo comes with seafood or chicken and sausage. It’s a must try if you are visiting New Orleans or Houston. This version of gumbo is lighter and soupier than usual, but there are so many different roux and broth base variations.
You say the craziest shit sometimes. lol
Wisconsin is known for its fish frys. I haven’t had a UK fish and chips, so I can’t compare, but I wouldn’t be afraid to put a good Wisconsin fish fry up against a good UK fish and chips.
It would definitely benefit you being here a few weeks or longer if you want to travel through the US. You can go coast to coast 🤷🏻♂️ Cause you will have different foods all throughout. Different scenery as well
Im born and raised in Louisiana it blew me away when he said I never had shrimp shrimp is in almost everything. Shrimp fried rice seafood gumbo shrimp poboy. Shrimp is seafood the meat is not like chicken or beef. I have shrimp on average once or twice a week. Sure you have not had prawns?
Guarantee your take on seafood will change if you come to the states lol
Try it before denying it. Trust me... shrimp is Amazing
11:09 you our over thinking it brother, it is usually soft if done right
Haha no the shrimp is not gooey. And you always always spice the batter for fried chicken and anything battered
Kind of a shame you aren't a seafood person. Some of the best savory dishes I've eaten in Louisiana are seafood or include seafood in it. Shrimp isn't gooey. If it's gooey there's something frankly wrong with it and should be thrown out in the garbage.
I dont blame him. If i lived in the Uk i wouldnt be a seafood person either.
@@nullakjg767
But fish & chips are great 😅
Also, you would enjoy my favorite gumbo being chicken and sausage gumbo, or in New Orleans...gumbo yaya.
Absolutely. All my mothers family are from Southern Louisiana (Baton Rouge-New Orleans) and I learned to make a killer seafood gumbo and a pretty decent etoufee. Love Louisiana food!!! If the shrimp is gooey.....DON'T EAT IT!!!! SERIOUSLY!!!😮
A lot of brits hate seafood because they’ve only eaten it in the UK.
The shrimp cooks up firm. It's just like a tiny lobster tail.
you think he knows what lobster tail is like?
😆😆😆@@-EchoesIntoEternity- he just said he doesnt like sea food 😀😀😀
@@-EchoesIntoEternity-Exactly. I think he’s actually commented before that he’s never had lobster, or crab, or oysters, I believe. And if I ate shrimp that was “gooey” I guarantee that’d be the LAST time I ate shrimp 🤢
If your shrimp is gooey, you're making it wrong. When it's cooked right, it'll be snappy and meaty.
Yeah I’m weirded out by the idea of “gooey” shrimp
If it's fried shrimp then there might be a lump of uncooked batter. I could see categorizing that as "gooey".
To be able to make videos like Jolly, you can't be a picky eater. You have to be willing to try anything.
Absolutely
Yeah. It's too bad that I'm a very picky eater.
I thank the Gods that I'm not a picky eater. I love food. Maybe a bit too much.
Yup. I see other British reactors also interject about all of the stuff they don't like too. It seems to be a theme.
@@Wiley_Coyote The Beasley's cough... cough....It's weird because a lot of these reactors that claim to hate stuff it's stuff they never even had. Or perhaps has bad version of it. Mr H and his wife seem to be willing to try everything though.
Being from Louisiana myself, we do use plenty of spices and hot sauce in a number of our traditional dishes, including Louisiana hot sauce. I’ve even drank the gumbo from the bowl myself like what Ollie did in the video. Shrimp when cooked properly is not gooey Lewis.
You may change your mind about seafood after trying the shrimp in gumbo. The seasoning takes it to another plane.
PS:
This is Creole. Soul food is something else altogether.
This, and wanted to add that shrimp is not gooey. It's got like an... I don't know... an al dente pasta texture. It has a bite to it, but isnt mushy or hard.
Too bad Jolly made the same mistake (they call it Soul food too). Arguably the Fried Chicken might be, but not the rest.
Yeah. I think if all you've had is English seafood, the amount of American seafood types would probably change his mind on at least a few things.
oh for sure i'd try it! might even end up liking it who knows!
@@Wiley_Coyote I though I saw some collard greens too that would also count and maybe the sweat potatoes
The catfish is what they should have put a few drops of hot sauce on
Yes, but not Louisiana Hot Sauce. It's literally the worst hot sauce of all time. They need to grab a bottle of Frank's.
You should definitely travel with Jolly next time they come to the US to try food. You probably would have loved it when they went to Savannah, the rodeo in Texas, and Chicago.
that would be sooo good, i just want to travel over there and eat a bunch
Hey Lewis, fried shrimp are not gooey or overly chewy. If they are those things, they are either overcooked or old. I would not eat shrimp that are either, and I love shrimp! That was a fun video. Hope that you are having a great weekend! Peace
I never understood how a county that at one point had colonized nearly all of the countries with such diverse spices for trade reasons never ended up using them in their cuisine. XD They're always getting their minds blown by foods with flavor.
LOL!!!! And mad because there are so many immigrants (I fully know this is not everyone). I've seen so many people mad about foreigners being in their country from the countries they colonized who are so clueless as to why these people are in their country! BUT, at least one of these wonderful immigrants created tikka masala and for that, the world is greatful.
That's been a running joke among comedians for decades. Britain conquers the world for spices and what do they come up with? Beans and toast!
@@Nitehawke😂😂😂
Maybe the British colonizers just wanted to get away from British food.
@@TXKafir - good point. And London probably smelled awful for a period of 500 years. They may have just wanted some fresh air! (and yes, I know there is plenty of fresh air in England)
WHY in the holy hell do you think shrimp is gooey?? 😂 If you have it cooked properly, it's firm yet soft.
You're too funny man lol
The part that cracked me up was "I've never had shrimp" followed by, very decisively "its gooey...right?"
@emilyb5307 right?!? He's so funny when he talks about food. "It's this right?" Noooooo it's not 🤣 "cuz I don't like that"
@@emilyb5307 .
What! You’ve never had shrimp? No, shrimp is not gooey! It’s delicious. You probably haven’t had good seafood. The food in New Orleans is on another level.
Try everything here L, some things that dont look good can be some of the best food you'll ever eat (Indian food comes to mind). The fishy foods, I sympathize if you dont normally like seafood, but you MUST try it in the South, because you just cannot beat really FRESH fish, and mixed with other ingredients I know might not sound like they go together, but trust me, they do!
Shrimp cooked right are not Gooey even slightly
Shrimp isn't gooey ever. I think you'll acquire the taste eventually! Can't wait til you get here! xo
Fried shrimp ain't gooey! If it's gooey you got problem.
Boy!! I oughta slap you! 😂 Don’t be comparing soups to gumbo. I know, you were kidding. But that hurt my soul there. The only think they have in common are that they are both hot liquids eaten with a spoon.
When shrimp is cooked properly it has almost a snap when you bite into it.
It's not mushy at all. Living on the Gulf Coast we eat a lot of shrimp, crabs and a host of other seafoods.
If shrimp is chewey it's because it's overcooked. If cooked properly, it's delicious
These guys area joy to watch. Great chemistry in all their videos, and they are hilarious. You would like fried shrimp. The meat texture is not gummy or mushy at all as long as it's fresh.
You can tell they aren’t spicy food lovers. Crystal hot sauce isn’t even hot. It’s a potent flavor with a bit of a kick, but not so much that you regret it. Some of our hot sauces will make you stay at home in an ice bath the next day.
One thing you learn when a CHEF makes something. You Do Not attempt to say no without trying it. It's an insult to those who work so hard to create something exceptional. Do a Reaction Video to this to see why. WHITE GUY SPEAKS ON FIRST BLACK COOKOUT|
Louisiana has some insanely good food.
I’ve eaten regional food in about 42 of the 50 states. The only state that can compare to Louisiana creole or Cajun is Hawaii. Chicken and andouille gumbo is its own food group.
@@stevewhiting556 I actually think that NYC has the second best food in the country
As a person who lives in Louisiana. If you don't eat Gumbo, or know how to make it, or even know what it is. You are not from here or your weird and honestly the same with Jambalaya.
In Louisiana they still need to try beignets, crawfish and etouffée.
Don’t leave out shrimp and grits, red beans and rice, or a low country boil.
@@stevewhiting556 love me some red beans and rice. Now I'm gonna have to go buy some to cook.
As they always say, our British friends conquered the whole world in order to get spices, then refused to use any of them. Always thought that was a joke until I met my wife. She used to ask me all the time why my cooking tasted so much better than hers. Answer: Spices. Usually simply salt.
My dad had heart and health problems for most of my life, and he hated anything spicy. My mom barely seasoned anything and would even omit salt from recipes. Once I started cooking for her, she couldn’t understand why my cooking was so much better than hers…Mom…dad’s gone…put some salt in it…don’t be afraid of a little butter…and a little oregano or some cumin can go a long way. I’d love to visit the UK and try their food, but I’m afraid I’ll have to take a seasoning sampler with me.
@@stevewhiting556 Just a little can really go a long way.

there are almost no foods in America that are 'gooey' unless they are specifically dessert type foods. all non dessert food have some kind of texture that is either 'flaky' or 'melt in mouth' or 'meaty' or 'crispy'. gooey is reserved for desserts and are very often sweet as well.
Being from Louisiana myself, I can tell you without doubt, that the fried shrimp are not gummy nor gooey inside. If they are, then they weren't cooked properly. I dated a U.K. man from West Sussex and when he would come to visit me in Louisiana he would aways say he would go back home a few stones heavier than when he left.😂 He loved the fried catfish here also and, like the guys in the video, he said that it was much better than any fish n chips he'd gotten back home. I think you would enjoy our foods as well!
He is so adorable. I can not get past the accent. Please take up a collection for this very deserving boy and let him tour the various food venues of the US.
When he’s in the south he needs to look me up. I’ll take a week off and take him to all kinds of great places.
LOL right… pass the collection plate.
I wanna cook him all the things. My husband and I love watching him!
I'm not a seafood fan myself, but you would probably love red beans and rice with andoulli sausage.
10:24 how to say you've never eaten shrimp before, without saying you've never eaten shrimp before 🤣
Yes, there's Gumbo without Seafood. There are different types/ingredients in different restaurants.
The thing to remember about America is that it is HUGE. While some things can be found everywhere, there are dozens of regional cuisines, with influences from cultures all over the world. In Minnesota, you can find Norwegian and Vietnamese cuisine side by side. In Connecticut, you can find Puerto Rican Pastelon (Basically plantain and beef lasagna) right down the street from a place serving creamy clam chowder and lobster rolls. New Mexico and Colorado are engaged in an endless debate over whether red or green chili is better, and California is tacofying every dish it comes across. The rest of the country has MANY opinions on The South, but everyone agrees their food is amazing. The USA is about the size of Europe, and you'd never say there's "European food" at least not unless you're willing to piss off most Europeans, there's just as much variety in American food, if not even more as a result of being an immigrant country.
Well said. I just had a family member visit from the UK, and this was definitely a point I wanted to make because he was seriously considering moving here. He had one specific experience, one regions cuisine, dealt with the accents and people of one segment of the country, but our state is not "America." I wanted him to know he has to travel around and really get a better sense before he thinks he knows what America is all about. The best way I put it was to think of each state as it's own country, within the country. We're all united under the same flag but there are definitely regional differences especially with the food.
You should definitely do a food review tour of the us. I'm not sure how similar our tax systems are, but you could potentially call it a buisiness expense instead of a vacation for tax purposes since you're a youtuber.
You would love shrimp. Shrimp aren’t gooey, it’s crunchy on the outside with firm sweet shrimp on inside
Dont know if you've heard of the show that's popular here in the US but it's called Diners Drive Ins and Dives.
It's basically a show where the host travels all over the US and eats at restaurants recommended by the locals.
I'd kill to have his job.
Crystals hot sauce is one of the weakest hot sauces we have in America. I love it but on the hot sauce spectrum it is very low.
Crystal imo is more of a flavor enhancer than a hot sauce.
I don't like much seafood myself. But there are plenty of other things to eat! In comments on other UK reaction videos, I've read that we have better beef than you get in England, for instance. Come over here and try some Black Angus steak. Not that stupid tomahawk thing, you're paying outrageous prices mostly for a bone. Try Ribeye, Sirloin or New York Strip.
Nobody would chant "Merica" but if you started chanting "U.S.A.", you could probably get a crowd going in the South.
Yams are meant to be sweet as a break with the rest of the savory food but the flavor melds well with everything. Mix it with mac and cheese for an unconventional but pleasant surprise
My 76 yr old mom has made candied yams every year for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter longer than I've been alive. Cooked with butter, brown sugar, pineapple chunks with the juice and bourbon. Super sweet, but oh so good.
Shrimp is not gooey. It’s a firm textured meet. Especially, if, as they say, it is shrimp cooked right. It has a similar firmness to chicken breast or a tender steak. You owe it to yourself to try shrimp at a place that makes them correctly. I must admit that I have never in my life had gooey shrimp. Raw oysters, absolutely. But, not shrimp.
Lmao 🤣 your tripping bro and I think you would like those shrimp too it's not as chewy as your thinking I'm not really a seafood guy either but shrimp is definitely worth a try
Heyo! That's my home state! I have a pretty bland palet when it comes to food. Like, I'll eat whatever, whenever, and have about the same response to everything. But even I can say they left out a lot of good stuff. Sauce piquante, etouffee, dirty rice, boudin, hush puppies, crawfish, frog legs, and more. We also have a lot of wild game in our cooking, like deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel, and even alligator. We also have an all spice ubiquitous to us called Tony Chachere's that will be in literally every household. (Confession time. I had to google several of these to spell them properly because we have a lot of french named things that don't follow common pronunciation)
OH! We also have fried pickles. Sounds crazy, but they're surprisingly good,
Maybe it's the local ingredients or maybe it's the voodoo but the food in New Orleans is amazing and well worth the trip.......
Me as a man of the south will tell you biscuits and gravy is the staple of my breakfast meals but you have to get it with the right white gravy 1 its got to have sausage in it 2 you put the flour inside the sausage (like in the same pan lol) and you cook that until the flour is brown-ish ( you have to keep on stirring it) when thats all brown you 3. You add milk until you get the right consistency
Also wanted to add - it should be American breakfast sausage. Our breakfast sausage is very sage heavy. I am not sure if you can buy the American version in UK very readily. It won't be the same w out that American sausage.
@@geegs120 oh yea gotta be sage sausage
A word in your ear... Don't close yourself down to trying new foods.
Shrimp is not gooey! It's not a fishy flavor either. You're thinking of clams, oysters, scallops. You would like fried shrimp, you should try it 😝
Candied sweet potatoes are a staple at Thanksgiving (no... they're not dessert) and in Soul Food restaurants. You don't mix them, you just eat them. They're a sweet respite to all the salt. They're made with brown sugar, butter and various "fall" spices like nutmeg and ground ginger.
I'm not a seafood fan either, so when I make gumbo it's chicken & andouille sausage 🐔
Yeah gumbo doesnt need to have shrimp in it. Its still just as delicious with chicken and sausage.
Try gumbo and fried shrimp anyway dude!
Shrimp is not gooey. I used to not like shrimp. I love it now! I prefer mine grilled/fried, spiced well with no breading. Yum!
Coconut shrimp! Mmmmmmmm 😋💙🥥🦐
As someone from that particular South Louisiana food area- every area in South Louisiana has its own version of this gumbo, jambalaya, all of these. And if you aren't huge on seafood, we make alot of chicken and sausage gumbo lol
Also, you need to try cajun vs creole. Both are very commonly mistake for same thing.
I am in Texas but live about 10 miles from Cameron Parish in southwest Louisiana (where my grandparents were from) and grew up on the more Cajun version.
The first time I had gumbo in a restaurant that had tomatoes in it (about 35 years ago), I was thinking, there is no way this is real gumbo! Then I found out that was more of a Creole style. 😎
Absolutely!! ❤🎉
im in lake charles. i know exactly what you mean. tomatoes have no place in a gumbo.@@tvc1848
@@tvc1848this notion that creoles only use tomatoes in their foods is ridiculous news flash there's no tomatoes in Africa so this myth needs to stop. Plus cajuns didn't even know what this food was when they got here to Louisiana.
@@roybabineaux5353
Try to find anywhere that I mentioned tomatoes as being anything. You are adding 2 plus 2 and coming up with 6.5.
It is like I have heard some people that believe by adding cayenne to a dish makes it Cajun…. which obviously is ridiculous.
I only used a single example of my lack of knowledge of different ingredients or techniques for similar foods, Cajun and Creole. About 45 years ago (35 is typo), I like many people thought that Cajun and Creole meant the same thing. My anecdote of being shocked by tomatoes in gumbo should be taken as nothing more than that. It was a reason for an education, not the end result.
Gumbo has seafood in it...that is the recipe. And 2 months would barely get you as far as you wish to go for food and stuff.
The rest of his life wouldn't be enough. 😊
My favorite is ppl who think they can DRIVE to NY, Miami, and Vegas in a weekend 😂
Not all of it does. A lot of Cajun style gumbo just has chicken and sausage. Maybe some game meat. Duck and sausage gumbo is good too.

she means that THEIR gumbo recipe has been around for about 75 years. Gumbo itself dates back to when France controlled the Louisiana territory. so, hundreds of years...
Popcorn/fried shrimp isn't gooey. It should eb snappy with a really distinct tender texture.
New Orleans Louisiana here. Best food in the world
Shrimp is NOT gooey. It's firm. Haven't you ever had it???
It all comes down to seasoning! You can easily find good recipes for cajun and creole seasonings. Mind you, those are 2 different flavors. And I'm sure you can find variants depending on how hot you like it.
No it doesn't it comes down to propaganda, the cajuns make no food no way that creoles doesn't make none. Now that being said cajuns brought nothing to Louisiana they adapted to the culture.
@@roybabineaux5353I honestly have no idea what you're trying to say. I'm not from Louisiana, so I'm just giving my opinion on the different things I've tried. There's no "propaganda" going on here, and I don't think you know what that word means.
When I said it's all about the seasoning I was just trying to tell L3WG that seasoning here in the U.S. is what makes our food different.
You seem very angry, but I hope you can find peace.
The candied sweet potatoes/yams are great as a side dish served with ham or turkey for a party; will be making some next week for thanksgiving. Way my family makes them is with brown sugar, lemon juice, orange juice and cinnamon and you slow simmer until the liquid turns to a syrup. You can also find recipes that use marshmallows and nuts in them. It really is like a milder dessert with your entree.
Deep fried shrimp has a firmer texture than chicken nuggets, much firmer than fish.
Catfish, and much of the fish eaten in the US, comes from freshwater, rather than the oceans. Breading down South often has corn meal included. Gumbo is made from "anything that walks, crawls, flies, or swims," and most traditionally thickened with ocra.
“…walks, crawls, flies or swims”…but not in a tree frog, grubs, over-developed chicken egg, cricket, tarantula, canine, chicken feet, rodent kinda way like other places in the world 🤢
@@julielong8714 I mean, you could, probably someone has before. That's kinda the point of the dish, to use whatever is available. Cultural cuisines almost always start as poverty food and become traditional and refined over time. Tarantula, dog, and earthworm gumbo would be really weird, but I'm betting you could make it palatable with the traditional technique and seasonings if you had to. (Bleh.) I know there are lots of people who make sausage or gumbo from fresh roadkill, to salvage the meat. That's what such recipes are more-or-less for, traditionally.
You have plain ol soups 😂
You need to try Maryland Crab Soup and a Maryland Jumbo Lump Crab Cake

Shrimp is textured like biting into a sausage, it bursts a little. It should NEVER be gooey 🤢
Yes. It would be next to impossible to get some of the ingredients needed for Cajun and Creole cooking in the UK.
Unless you get Gulf Shrimp, Blue Crabs, Crawfish and Catfish. I don't know if the UK gets the types of fish and seafood the region is known for.
Now, a chicken and Andouile Sausage Gumbo or Jambalaya is very possible. Though I don't know if you get Cajun seasonings and old bay. Someone might need to send you the seasonings and some Louisiana hot sauce with a recipe for each so you can make it at home and try it. Because I can virtually guarantee that there is little chance of a restaurant like that opening up in the UK.
You have to remember that soul food begins during slavery when food was sourced from the leftover parts of meat masters wouldn’t eat, bones to make broth and locally foraged greens, herbs, vegetables …plantation rice, gulf seafood like shrimp or fish from lakes and bijou’s.
A gumbo could be stretched to feed many people.
Over time more and more recipes developed using available produce such as Sweet Potatoes, fried green tomatoes, bread pudding, and French/Cajun inspired dishes.
Being in Texas we get a lot of Louisiana food.
Gumbo is one of my favorites. While you can put pretty much any type of meat you want in it there are classics.
My favorite is seafood Gumbo it consists of Crawfish, shrimp, crab meat and oysters. The only hard part about making Gumbo is the Roux ,it consists of oil and flour.
While it may seem easy enough it takes some practice to get it right. I like dark roux which simply means you cook it longer, but the darker it gets the higher the chance you'll burn it.
If you see small black specs you've burned it. Throw it out and try again.
You also have whats called the Holy Trinity,it's simply onions green bell peppers and celery. Once your roux is right the Holy Trinity is added to the Roux which stops the cooking of the Roux.
I could go on but I'd be here awhile.
Somehow, despite how much water is likely around him, something tells me this man has not been served decent seafood in his life.
If your shrimp is gooey it has gone off. If it's chewy it's overcooked.
Shrimp is not gooey. It tender. And no you can't be a food traveler you wont eat creamy or different looking food.
Deep fried shrimp is not gooey at all. I'm a texture guy, too, and you should definitely try it.
Shrimp aren't gooey. They have a firm texture and are essentially the same thing as prawns.
The shrimp is not gooey. It has the texture of a cooked shrimp and a crispy fried cover.
If you're eating gooey shrimp, it's not cooked correctly lol
Shrimp are rubbery if they are overcooked. Shrimp are not gooey
This is creole food not soul food. Shrimp isn't mushy or chewy.
Fried Shrimp is anything but chewy and gooey.
It still blows my mind when brits say americans dont have any dishes thats from america
My comment on people who do not like seafood is that they have probably had it badly cooked, probably overcooked.
Or they just don't like the taste. Been an Oregonian all my life; we have good seafood. I love fish and chips, and salmon is wonderful. The clam chowder from a little cafe in my first job's office building smelled so good every Friday I had to try it, and learned to enjoy that. I love crab puffs. But that's pretty much it. And when my tastebuds don't like something, I heave. I refuse to torture myself trying things that smell terrible to me. It gets frigging embarrassing vomiting at tables. I'm too damned old for that. (68, to be precise. 😁)
What is up with the Brits hating spice 😂

How can you not like seafood. 🤷🏻♂️
Shrimp is not gooey
Shrimp is definitely not gooey. If it is then it's off.
FRIED SHRIMP IS CRISPY, CRUNCHY
That was creole cuisine, not cajun. They are often put together, but the Cajuns don't use tomatoes in our dishes. I am Cajun French by blood, and am born and raised southwest of New Orleans. I was also a New Orleans chef for over 20 years, so if you have any questions, just ask.
Creoles doesn't always cook with tomatoes either you guys didn't even know what Louisiana foods were until you got here. I like the myth that tomatoes means Creole which is ridiculous.
Fried catfish is REALLY, really good. It's flakey and has a mild flavor like cod does, but definitely doesn't taste the same. It's also cooked in cornbread batter which is slightly sweet and has a very different (but nice), crispier texture than regular fish batter.
Also, Shrimp is amazeing, especially fried. It's my favorite food. It's not gooey or mushy at all. Has a nice bit of firmness to it and a mildly sweet taste.
