"I Enjoy Being A Girl" - Carol Burnett, Chita Rivera, Caterina Valente ala Morticia Addams

- In honor of Halloween, here is a fun version of "I Enjoy Being a Girl," performed by Carol Burnett, Chita Rivera and Caterina Valente . The clip is from "The Entertainers" (so sometime between 1964/1965...which happened to be when "The Addams Family" was also on the air...hence it being more likely to be inspired by Morticia than Vampira...the latter of which was inspired by the character that would become Morticia in the original comics, so...).
There is also a cameo by Boris Karloff....who starts us off as a gravedigger and also shows up at the end to do, of all things, a version of "Chim Chim Cher-ee" from Mary Poppins, which sadly is truncated as the guy who loaded in the clip was only caring about Chita (curse him, not me :) - Розваги
RIP to the fabulous Caterina Valente, who died age 93 9. September, just two weaks ago.
Yes, maybe that's why this popped up- very glad it did and she's great in it...
😢
It hurts that two of these women are gone.
RIP Condolences to her loved ones.

Boris Karloff as the gravedigger to the tune of Whistle While You work 😂
Considering the old adage of "whistling past the graveyard" makes it extra funny.
In a cameOOOooo.
Oh that’s great! I didn’t pick up that it was him!!!
And he sings chim chim charoo to end it?!? What universe is this? 😂
@@jenngill7772 it's a weirder timeline than we were in last week.
There could be 10 women singing together and you can still recognize Carol Burnettes voice in the crowd.
Yes, her voice is very distinctive and powerful.
Facts! Carol was so iconic
@@brittanylamb375 is. She’s still alive (knocking wood)
This justifies UA-cam existing. How many other places does this even still exist, much less in a way that people can find out about it?
YT controllers like witch narratives and anything else linked to the dark side but they work very trying to suppress the truth
Agreed!
Rumble or Odyssey, for starters.
Agreed!!
I think the reason such clips are so "rare" is that it appears to be more lucrative to the rights holders to sit on their copyrights and license a fraction of 1% out to the rare documentary that wishes to use them, than to make them all available to us to begin with. So they sit and get forgotten, until anyone who might be interested is dead and gone.
This is from a show called THE ENTERTAINERS. It lasted 1 season this episode is from January 1965
That’s the month/year I was born. Enjoyed this - but I liked all those variety shows that were on TV when we were kids.
Yeah, it sounds like it was a flop. What ever happened to Valente?
I watched it every night of the whole season. Formulaic but I still remember Carol’s skits.
i came along 8 months after you .
Thanks, I was wondering what this was from.
I was used to Carol Burnett and her humor, but to see Chita Rivera and Caterina Valente in this number playing it to the hilt just floors me.
What a great treat.
I thought that was Madeline Kahn.
Carol's facial expressions in this are INIMITABLE!
Yesssss!!!!
It’s not easy to sing harmonies that close. This is beyond awesome! I never thought I’d hear Boris Karloff doing Chim-Chim-Chiree. 😂🖤
THEIR HARMONIES THO!! Even the tight chords with tension - clean and tight and right on pitch. What pros.
I miss variety shows! Growing up in the 60s and 70s there was a variety show or a special on every week.
I know, huh? There was a certain 'special something' about the 60's and 70's! 😢
People get amazed when I tell them Julie Andrews had a variety show. 😄
Sonny and Cher/Donny and Marie were my faves!!
i miss them too! So much! Often pretty darned wholesome too!
@@bobhoke595 Anything that wasn't was done with a wink and a nod and innuendo and was totally hilarious.
And no one was better at this than Tim Conway.
I'm definitely not disappointed this showed up on my feed.
Having lost chita Rivera this week, I was stunned to find this and it's a great one.l
And Caterina Valente just passed away on September 9th.
@@orangelion03farewell to great talent
We were fortunate enough to meet her when she read the Christmas story at the Candlelight Processional at Epcot . Seemed very nice.
Rivera died back in Jan of this year (Jan 30, 2024)... Valente died about a week and a half ago (Sep 9, 2024). And of course, the great Boris Karloff (the guy with the shovel, for those who didn't recognize him) died on Feb 2, 1969 - almost exactly 4 years after this performance (Jan 1965) was recorded.
@stevecannon4780 Sorry you lost her... how long were you two married?
The Carol Burnett Show had the most fantastic sets, costumes, comedy: and featured many leading black artists. Her show is still worth watching today.
A genuine trailblazer!
This isn't her show, though; it was never in black & white.
Description says Gary Moore show but yes Carol's show was the best
This is actually "The Entertainers," a CBS variety show from '64/'65 with Carol, Caterina, and Bob Newhart as the regular hosts and Chita and Boris as guests this week. Few episodes have survived, so it's little remembered.
I am blessed that this was still on TV (reruns) when I was younger. I have laughed so hard at so many of their skits to the point I couldn't breathe. These actors, comedians were so talented.
Carol, Chita, Caterina: the 3 "C"s! What a wonderful combination of voices and acting in this excellent, unique representation! This year, Chita and Caterina left us leaving Carol to carry all those splendid memories ..... Respect and much love for all these actors of those golden years!
Carol took such crazy risks with these numbers. Of course it helps that her guests were stage and concert performers with great ears and able to nail these routines. I cannot think of anyone today who could do this weekly
I agree except this wasn’t on her show.
@@armpitification True, but she was outstanding on the Gary Moore show as well. A bit before my time, but she has stated in interviews how much being on this show shaped her style, she was given a lot of room to express herself. There's a clip on YT of a Supergirl sketch she did on the Gary Moore show that's definitely worth checking out.
For the record, the uploader is mistaken: this isn't "The Garry Moore Show" either. It's "The Entertainers," which was on CBS in 64/65, after she left Garry but before her own show. But the point stands that she was so often willing to take a risk for a laugh, and we can see the payoff.
This is not from.the Carol Burnett Show.
...and, to correct my earlier (incorrect) point about this being too early to be Morticia: The Entertainers was broadcast during the 1964/1965 season. This would put it exactly in the same season both The Addams Family and The Monsters premiered. (I'm so embarrassed when I spread misinformation!)
Should have been, “I Enjoy Being a Ghoul”.
😂😂😂
You obviously didn't watch the entire clip, or you would have known that would ruin one of the funny lines in the song. Too bad you're from The Immediate Gratification Club where you miss out on all the immeasurable tiny gifts life holds.

Actually This is from a Television Show Called the Entertainers, , The Entertainers was a one-hour American variety show which aired on CBS from September 25, 1964 through March 27, 1965. Produced by Joe Hamilton, the series featured three hosts; Hamilton's then-wife Carol Burnett, Bob Newhart, and Caterina Valente.
Thank you!
@Commodore 64 People were used to live shows then, it’s very entertaining if you have learned to appreciate a fresh show every week appearing in your living room every week and you don’t even have to pay for it. Everyone knew the song, the skit probably reappeared in school shows at Halloween next year.
I thought this was great.
@Commodore 64 This performance was from SIXTY YEARS AGO (I'm struggling to refrain from calling you what it is obvious to most of us that you are). It's unfortunate that you were born with a compete dearth of imagination, interest in sociology, history, and humor. I was born in 1963. Throughout my childhood and early twenties, I worked with the Historical Society, restoring homes from the early 1800s and conducting tours through them at the ripe old age of ten years, restoring antique automobiles to ORIGINAL condition (not hopping them up as hotrods), and collecting, restoring antique clothing which we then modeled in a show consisting of spicy fun and humorous commentary with interesting short historical stories of interest, a professional singer performing songs with musical accompaniment, and an authentic Chesleston, performed by my mother, a professional dancer and teacher into her 90s.
You, my dear, are out of your league. And if you do not know or understand what you are talking about, kindly refrain from rudely dismissing it out of hand. Try operating your brain before your mouth and fingers. There is a rich history of personal stories that anyone should be interested in exploring. For it is through history that we avoid repeating the mistakes of the past (such as Hitler and his Nazis arising in America), which is sheer stupidity. If the shoe fits...
@@kristieroybal4888 - You have no idea how hard I had to work NOT to respond to Commode 64, or whatever it's name is.
Glad I didn't, since your response was much better, and far more polite, than mine would have been.
Also, it seems you and I are about the same age.
I very much remember watching things on TV that I'm quite sure the younger crowd would have no appreciation for at all.
In fact, I just had a... er...um... "conversation" with someone concerning the old 1930s and '40s "Tarzan" movies, and Johnny Weissmuller...
The poor kid had no idea that anybody before Disney ever made a movie about the character. lol
Anyway, Carol Burnett, Dean Martin, and a whole host of other "fossils" were favorites of mine, even as a kid.
And I very much miss not having their like on TV anymore. Because the crap that passes for entertainment these days just doesn't cut it for me.
Boris what a treat! What a beautiful voice!
My heart grew three sizes.
Annoying that he was cut off at the end of this video.
During his long entertainment career Boris Karloff only won one entertainment award and that was in 1968 when he won the Grammy for Best Recording For Children, with his recording of his reading of Dr. Seuss' "How The Grinch Stole Christmas".
Thanks for tjis information. It's a shame his part was cut from this clip.
I loved anything that had Boris Karloff involved. I still have the recording of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", and love listening to it. But it's pretty worn out now. I have it on tape, thank God , because the record got too scratched to listen to YEARS ago!

Caterina Valente was so talented and beautiful. I remember watching her on the Ed Sullivan show. She not only was a fabulous singer, but she was an amazing tap dancer.
I love the Morticia outfits.

I’m 63. TV was so much fun back then. ❤
An aspect of this video that I didn't see referenced in the comments is its use of the "yeah, yeah, yeah" craze that hit the entertainment biz for a year or so following the Beatles' debut on Ed Sullivan. "She Loves You," with its "yeah, yeah, yeah" refrain, seems to have struck social critics, TV hosts, and comedians of every stripe, as worthy of mention. While critics and commentators saw it as one more sign of Western civilization's collapse, comedians and entertainers mostly used it for a cheap laugh. Any Fab Four takeoff invariably featured a chorus of "yeahs" and singers often worked it into a performance knowing it would guarantee a laugh. So I'm guessing that the abundance of "yeahs" to be found in this clip (which are NOT part of the original version of this song) were the result of the Gary Moore writers jumping on the Beatle bandwagon.
This is not a clip of the Garry Moore Show, it's a show called "The Entertainers". There was actually a trend in French pop music called "Ya Ya" music during the early 60s. In France, it was more popular than rock or girl group music. There are many videos on UA-cam featuring "Ya Ya" artists like Sheila. Most of them were filmed for Scopitone, sort of an early music video.
So this is the inspiration behind Beyonce's All the Single Ladies!
I know your joking but the real inspiration for single ladies was Bob Fosse's Mexican Breakfast!
Thank goodness for UA-cam to bring up all my retro memories ❣️

Lyrics
When I have a brand new hairdo
With my eyelashes all in curls
I float as the clouds on air do
I enjoy being a girl
When men say I'm cute and funny
And my teeth aren't teeth but pearls
I just lap it up like honey
I enjoy being a girl
I flip when a fellow sends me flowers
I drool over dresses made of lace
I talk on the telephone for hours
With a pound and a half of cream upon my face
I'm strictly a female female
And my future I hope will be
In the home of a brave and free male
Who'll enjoy being a guy, having a girl like me
Hi Dianne. Thanks for printing the lyrics to this great Halloween clip. The song 'I Enjoy being a Girl' is from Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1958 musical "Flower Drum Song" which was a big hit at the time on Broadway and a bestselling soundtrack album too, and was filmed later in 1961. It's a solo song by a Chinese American girl in its contemporary setting of the modern-day San Francisco Chinatown community of the late 50s.
