I wouldn't go within a country mile of a Trequartista normally - but I loved that little nugget of advice right at the end: 'might be good to bring off the bench when you are struggling to break down a smaller team'. I've never thought of it like that. Little tips like that are what make you a cut above when it comes to analysing tactics
I know this an old vid but I had a Treq who had a 11 workrate and anytime i played him behind the pressing forward he would be an add threat due to his workrate so a treq with pretty good workrate is also very good when you need him to create and while also give a little sweat defensively
While I can see the use of it. I feel like most big and successful teams tend to press. Which makes this role feel a little redundant. Great video buddy!
Hey Stinger, just discovered your channel recently. I'm a huge FM ner---I mean mastermind, like you. I have been exploring FM22 in depth and found that the match engine has some severe flaws, like Inside Forwards not working properly. Bustthenet just released a video on it. I'd like to ask your opinion on the wide Trequartista - the Treq played in the AML or AMR positions. In my experience, I've only tried it once on one team in previous FMs - Barcelona with MSN. My setup was to get the ball to one of MSN whenever possible, and have them tear apart the opponent however they'd like. The setup was Inside Forward (Neymar) - Pressing Forward (Suarez) - Trequartista (Messi) I set up the rest of the team to press as much as possible with the highest workrate, teamwork, and stamina players to cover for Messi's low workrate. But this trio was absolutely spectacular. Messi would literally replicate those insane lob through-balls or crosses from deep into space for Neymar to run into. I am really not sure whether such a setup, with a wide Trequartista, would work with any other player not named Messi. However, I find that the Treq role, due to having maximum creative freedom hardcoded, allowed the Argentine wizard to do whatever the fuck he wanted. The end result was a crapload of goals and a crapload of assists in equal measure. I think this is the big difference between the Trequartista, Inside Forward, Advanced Playmaker and Inverted Winger. IFs will score the most, assist the least. IWs will assist more, score less. APs (wide) will assist even more and score even less. Finally, wide Trequartista seems to score and assist in equal measure - assisting possibly as much as the IW or AP, but scoring more (but still scoring less than IF). I still think the IF is stronger role, and if the sole purpose is to maximize goals and winning then I would probably pick IF over the wide Trequartista anyday. But I was going for style and flair and boy did it deliver. Let me know your thoughts, cheers.
Hey man It's not a role I've used much the treq out wide. I tend to agree with you though that it might be a Messi only thing. I would give it a go in a assymetric formation with good defensive cover on his side though. I think that could be an option Hopefully SI address the inside forward issue for full release
@@StingerNeilD Hey Neil, thanks for the quick reply. I think I've finally cracked the code in FM21 - how to replicate the tactic of Pep Guardiola for prime Barcelona, 2008-2014 (prior to MSN). And the crown jewel, the capstone and master key to this system is Messi as a Trequartista in the centre forward position. When the team is fit and motivated, they play out of their fucking minds, and it's the most beautiful simulation I've managed to recreate in any FM to date. I have Ansu Fati (IF-A) - Messi (Treq) - Griezmann (IF-A) with everyone else on a support role, except for a Sweeper Keeper that I switch between attack and support. There is typically an Advanced Playmaker next to a Deep-Lying Playmaker in midfield, anchored by a Half-Back behind them. In my midfield engine, the two roles I never deviate from is the DLP and HB. However, I will change the up the third role from AP, to Roaming Playmaker, to Mezzala, depending on the player in question. I haven't decided which role is the best yet, but since the system is rather fluid with multiple positions having roaming freedom and creative freedom, I don't think it matters too much. As long as the players are intelligent and skilled, with a strong mentality and workrate, the engine will tick without a problem. In defense are two BPDs, flanked by two Wingbacks on support duty. In order to replicate Barcelona and reduce crossing attempts, the WBs are given insturctions to sit wider, shoot more often, cross less often, and take less risks. I found that WBs still tended to attempt too many crosses for my liking, UNTIL I switched on "shoot more often." I think what happens in the match engine is that the AI is encourage to attempt more movements, both on and off the ball, closer to the box for an attempt on goal. And if the AI's mentality is to "attack the goal via shooting," then the AI will do that over crossing the ball. I can't say 100% this is the case, but logically speaking, it does make sense. There is more to this tactic, but this is the general structure of it. I've been trying to both Trequartista positions - on the AML slot, and the CF slot, and I do believe Messi as the player closest to goal is the most dangerous thing you can do in this game. The tactic reliably nets over 60% possession away from home, and reliably sees Messi have MORE TIME ON THE BALL IN THE MOST OFFENSIVE ROLE IN THE GAME. I think this is the singular most important factor. Of course, this also counts his touches from corners and free kicks, but still. Messi regularly hits over forty passes per game as a CF, and gets more touches than both my Inside Forwards. I'm really happy about this and wanted to share it. As a Barcelona supporter of over a decade, FM21 is the best version of this game I've played. I hope they sort out the issues in FM22 because the potential is there, but unfortunately, it could also be a misfire and the "real fix" will come in FM23-25.
Really interesting this one - seems like a role that wouldn't necessarily work up against a team setup to park the bus? Unless he has top class long shots I suppose
Never really used it before, but I'm also planning to do some experimenting with it in FM21, should be fun! ;-) As always, good explanation mate, loved it!
@@StingerNeilD Definitely a role for the ST and AMR/AML. With the license to roam, they either drift wide and then look for spaces in and around the box. Or constantly play through balls for others. A treq is not defined to the AMC role IMHO.
@@ramanze can't argue with you there pal. I used the AMC area as that's the one I had most queries about. It's a free spirit role so can be used like you say in any of the attacking postions
FMStinger Yeah, the video was great mate. As it showcased the role in its purest form. Just wanted to add some additional context. Due to the fact I used the treq role with an ST and AML in FM20.
@@ramanze Messi at Paris is exactly that. A treq on the right, with Hakimi responsible for exploiting the space he leaves on the right, and Ander Herrera/Gueye shuttling the space behind him.
Love your analysis of a Treq, great vid! I was wandering, a Treq as you said, a AM-Treq doesn't fancy having fellow Inside Fors getting in his way, BUT a Treq in the position of a Striker used in combination with IF, will it work? I currently have a Treq (his best postion is as a Striker, not as Attacking Midfielder) as one of my best players and using a formation which has good IFs... i really want to use this guy, he's 17 with superb potential. Any suggestions on using a Striker - Treq, maybe use him in conjunction with a 2nd Striker? Would love to hear any suggestions! Thnx! (Playing FM20)
Try playing strikerless. Formation is 4-3-3 DM, but move Messi into the AMC slot instead of the striker slot. It causes some interesting things to happen in the match engine. Messi won't start higher and drop deeper, he'll start deeper and dribble through the opposition's defense. Overall, it's kinda interesting, and I like to move him up and down between the two slots as the match progresses.

Agreed. Trend is high pressing teams. The more I think about it the more it could be of use in a lower league team

That’s a lie.
Really interesting this one - seems like a role that wouldn't necessarily work up against a team setup to park the bus? Unless he has top class long shots I suppose
I'd be inclined to go the other way with that. The treq loves to find space where there isn't any, so it could work well in that scenario

I think my first example of a treq would be Papu Gomez from Atalanta.
Here's a question for you, what about using the Treq role on the wide positions and striker positions?
Interesting. Same deal though as in he'll drop from his starting position looking for space rather than sticking. Good question that.
