These two were such a perfect pairing! Billy had that swagger, pretty face and lovely baritone & Steve Stevens' playing is so flawless, dynamic, inventive and energetic. Hard to imagine a player of that caliber playing that riff for 'White Wedding' without complicating it, yet it was so perfect for the song, showing he's more than a great guitarist, but a great musician as well. Loved 'Atomic Playboys'!

We played this song in my old cover band, and people went crazy. This song was harder to sing than you think because of the dynamics and low section. So fun.

I saw Billy Idol years ago in Fredericton New Brunswick, Canada. Billy was great, however Steve the guitarist was beyond words. A friend told me about your site yesterday. What a frigging incredible job Fil !! We needed this! I'm from the maritimes in Canada. Could you show case some of our gifted guitarists. IE. Don Ross. An amazing award winning finger style guitarist.

The comment about Steve dropping into a solo, while also keeping the songs timing is something nils lofgren ,in my opinion is also a master of, when goes off on a wild solo,he is always mindfully of the underlying tunes time and rhythm.

Always love your analyses, Fil! I absolutely agree with every observation you made. The first time I saw this, I was awed by how well this high energy song was carried off by just an acoustic guitar and a voice. I was totally impressed by Steve's successful emulation of a total rock band using his acoustic, with his percussive style pf playing, his use of bass line transitions between verse/chorus etc, use of power chords together with triads.
You nailed your observation about the lead. It is SO easy to lose the song when the solo acoustic guitarist launches into a lead. Here, Steve is always mindful of how the lead fits into the context of the song. He doesn't spend too much time in the high notes, when the time is right, he jumps down to the bass strings and makes a hot transition back to the muted power chords. Steve is always dedicated to the effectiveness of the song - he is the least self-indulgent guitarist I know.
Also, I suspect Steve got his excellent command of establishing dynamics on acoustic guitar from his early training in Flamenco guitar.
What he was doing here was much more sophisticated than a typical acoustic accompaniment. Upon listening to this you don't really miss the rest of the band or the electrification. That is not easy to pull off!
Naturally, this made me a student of Steve's and I remain so to this day.
P.S. - I have always been a fan of Billy's singing and stage presence. They are an awesome pair.

Billy Idol became really popular during a downer period of my life, but his two songs, “Rebel Yell” and “White Wedding” were incredible hits, and I loved them. Remember dancing at a club to Rebel Yell, and really getting into it, and actually having White Wedding come on the radio the day I was in my good friend’s wedding. So weird! Just saw this video of Billy doing Rebel Yell with Miley Cyrus in Las Vegas a few years ago. It’s amazing. I’m not a fan of Miley Cyrus, but she has a great voice. And Billy sounded and looked great. The crowd was stoked.

Spot on Fil! I was 15 years old when this came out, and was hooked. You are a t-shirt guy, I remember two I had - Rebel Yell with a fist and spiked bracelet and Slippery When Wet Bon Jovi tour shirt. Billy sounds every bit as good now as then.
I also remember seeing this version and before playing it, thought there was no way to pull it off....but this is nothing short of brilliant. I doubt any one else could have done this.
This is a little long, but I was watching Steve do a tutorial and speaking of his rhythym work with the band, he doesn't play the root of the chord progression, it's the base playing it. You talk about top guitarist play what the song needs, he does that, and I have always thought his rhythym playing in this song and Billy's voice makes it rock to a level that very few can reach. He brilliantly combined those two and his dynanics - just too good.
    They nailed white Wedding too.
For Halloween/Guy Fawkes day - Something like Don't Fear the Reaper, Highway to Hell or Atomic Punk analysis in a Ghostbusters T-shirt! 😁
Thanks again! And I really appreciate you reading and written back. Rock! 🤘

Fil, I saw this in 1984 right after I saw Dio for the first time...... man it was MEGA!!! When he does those little descending chord runs...... man you HAD to feel it. It was soooo loud and clean. Steve and really Billy and the band never really got the recognition they should have. But they were HUGE back then. They kind of get overlooked because Pyromania and Thriller were so big a lot of the other really great bands just got caught under the wave. But Billy Idol, Tom Petty and a couple others were pretty much always thought selling tickets no matter who was the “big thing” or what genre was in at the time. Great job..... AGAIN lol
