I took my 74-year-old mom to her first rock concert in 2016 when The Pretenders opened for Stevie Nicks. Mom started crying when Chrissie sang I'll Stand by You. And then that got me sobbing too. But we stopped our sobbing when they played their next song 😉. Chrissie was tremendous. (As was Stevie.)

Chrissie Hynde possesses one of the great rock voices, and explained it beautifully, saying, “distinctive voices in rock are trained through years of many things: frustration, fear, loneliness, anger, insecurity, arrogance, narcissism, or just sheer perseverance - anything but a teacher." The Pretenders has always struck me as very unique musically. The tempo and cord changes in songs like Tattooed love boys, and Message of love are prime examples, and also my two favorite songs of theirs. Chrissie has that edge in her vocals that gives me goosebumps (in a good way). where she has that range of not only being a commanding presence, but also has the right amount of compassion and feminine in her expression. Where she brings that grungy punk quality, but adds a bit of empathy..hard to express exactly in words, but something that is felt, I guess. Thanks for sharing a great band, that is often overlooked and underrated.

Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders, I so enjoyed them through the 80's. I had a bit of self isolation (hippie commune in Northern CA in the late 70's early 80's, no radio,no TV) and when I came out there was this band "The Pretenders", what a "coming back to the world" gift. My favorite Pretenders song (kinda sugary but I like it) "I remember You". Here is that last verse, Chrissie Hynde wrote the song.
I remember the first time we slept
What a surprise to wake up to
    Someone I hardly knew
From a sleep to a dream come true
    I remember you
Chrissie did really good. Thanks Fil.

A few years ago I had the privilege of having a Top 10 of my favourite singles played on my local radio station and 'Talk of the Town' was one of my choices. The Pretenders have always been a very under-rated group and they have given us many truly brilliant songs during their career. James Honeyman Scott along with Andy Summers of The Police really defined that specific chorus/flanger dominated sound back in the late 70s/ early 80s but he doesn't get the recognition probably because of his early demise IMO.

I discovered Chrissie and the Pretenders in 1980 after moving back home to San Diego. Their unique sound is obviously very impressive, and along with Chrissie's writing and singing made their popularity explode in the 80's. Chrissie has been lauded as one of the most beautiful women in the world, and I agree that she is simply strikingly attractive, in a unique way. Keep in mind, during this concert, she is well over 50 years old. Not too bad! I guess that in addition to her good genes, there is something to a vegan lifestyle, which Chrissie has followed for most of her life. Love her recent album, Stockholm.

I can truly say I'm glad she hung in there and saw her dreams through. She's very talented and deserves the success she's had and no doubt will continue to have. Really fine post Fil. Rock!

For a different sound from her I’d like to mention her album with The Valve Bone Woe Ensemble (especially the Nancy Wilson classic “How Glad I Am”). I really like it!

Fil, truly love how you know the history of the bands you analyze and how you appreciate the history of the music you analyze. I was hoping you would analyze the song “The Rain, The Park and Other Things,” by The Cowsills. They were a family band from Rhode Island? Thx.

Check the June 2013 performance of the Cowsills "The Rain..." here on UA-cam. I know it's sweetened up a bit but it's great nonetheless!

You have done great analyses on 4 of my 5 favorite female singers (Chrissie Hynde, Karen Carpenter, Patsy Cline and Linda Ronstadt). I would love for you to do an episode on my fifth favorite female singer-Alison Moyet.
I understand she is much more well known in the UK, but she has a very loyal following in the U.S.. I know she is tired of the comparisons to Adele, but there is no escaping the fact that her range and powerful, yet soulful, voice invites such comparisons.

How did I miss this? The greatest female voice in Rock.
Never heard anything like it. I understand she teamed up with Stevie Nicks, of all people! My heroine.

The quicker tempo is the first thing I noticed as soon as the song started.

I have loved Chrissie/The Pretenders since the first time I heard The Wait on KROQ In the summer of 1978, a harder rocking song you’ll never find. It was a long Wait until the Christmas shopping season 1978 when the album/Brass in Pocket was finally released. She has one of the most distinctive/stylized voices in Rock and has written a great, interesting songs, including some with very different time signatures.
Have seen her live twice, most recently in the mid 2000s as the middle act with ZZ Top and the Stray Cats-great show!!!
Thanks for filling in her history. I have her autobiography, but haven’t finished it yet. A couple of interesting factoids: she was going to Kent State and knew one of the victims that was slain by the National Guard in 1970 (so did DEVO) and she had her first baby by Ray Davie if the Kinks. What great music. What a fascinating life. Thanks for featuring her. Rock!

ahh :) just love it . This band's first two albums will be part of any record collection I own. Love them. Thank you Fil for even just playing them and although, back then, I thought that they could never replace James Honeyman-Scott (brilliant guitarist) or Pete Farndon (who played in Aussie bush band "The Bushwackers" for a while before the Pretenders started... check out a track called the Lachlan Tigers) , the Pretenders never lost a beat and this track, some 30 yrs plus, just shows that this band need never slow down :)
