    I love how Steve Vai didn't try to play the traditional blues & did his own thing, that's what makes him great he's such a composer & a artist it's impossible for him to imitate any person or style, he's totally original.

      Joe Satriani is a God of guitar any genre, blues included. He runs circles around those guys in these blues Jam. Steve Vai is not a blues player, so that is his way to play, things fit in, but don't sound like blues, but He is a master of other styles.

    ...so, every once in a while one gets to experience a "special" moment in life, and I've been lucky enough to have a few. Being a fan and a friend of Les', this Les Paul Foundation 100th Celebration was a big one for me. To be able to share the stage with such immense talents as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Neal Schon, Steve Miller Band, G.E. Smith, Warren Haynes and Joe Bonamassa is something we dream of as little kids in our bedrooms as we struggle to find a voice and a little spot in the this business we call music. On this particular night, when this moment came, I had to struggle through it due to equipment malfunctions...it was devastating to me as it was happening in "real time" (I actually walked off stage at one point). I want to send a personal "shout out" to my very good friend and and extremely talented artist Joe Bonamassa who not only encouraged me back to the stage, but handed me his guitar cable allowing me to have my moment. Thank you Joe, you are a true artist and friend. ja

      Johnny A. As a guitar player myself (although not of the caliber of any of you onstage that night), I think I can say that all guitarists know things like this happen from time to time. Regardless, Joe got you plugged in pronto, and your solo was excellent. Despite the band being a little lost (and Steve stepping on you), clearly heard what you were sayin'. Great job, and kudos for being a real professional!

    To those wondering why Steve Vai was present at this event:
    Steve Vai was personal friends with Les Paul. He wanted to pay tribute to him out of a place of Love. Steve put aside the fact that he's [admittedly] uncomfortable playing the Blues and paid respect the best he knows how. It's like my reason for watching this video: I don't like Blues music, but I Love Steve Vai and wanted to watch him pay respect to someone he Loved.

      Ivo Stan I know right?! Those were the two guys I learned just a little more about. Bonamossa's tone stands out. And by his own admission Vai is no blues player. But he really played with restraint and used the whammy quite expressively. I may take issue with his sense of swing but clearly he's a self aware enough player to know what his weaknesses and strengths are. It was no time for shredding and it kind of brought out the best in him.

      +Ivo Stan You just knew that Vai was going to blow their socks off. Satch too. All the others were just going over the same pentatonic licks we've all come to know as blues standards. But when you get shredder in that mix, he's going outside the box.

    • @andyreasoner5289
      @andyreasoner5289 8 років тому

      +Danny McCaffrey Yes, but if he don't play blues it doesn't mean he can't (not able :) ) play it, he can play anything being so technically proficient. Once during interview he tod that blues was to predictable for him and I agree. I like blues but blues is technically often very simpe and really predictable. He looks for new territories of music making sometimes kind of experiments. Such musicians, in that guitarists, as Steve move borders of music forward.

    It would be even more awesome if they all played their solos on the same Les Paul Goldtop, we could hear the actual differences in their styles, and it would show the versatility of Les Paul guitar :D

    I don't care what guitars they are playing, when have you or will you see that much talent on stage at any one time again. Perhaps missing a Steve Lukather and a Mark Knopfler and David Gilmour to be 100 % on the money ... imho, I'm sure you all have your own opinions. I hope you all enjoyed watching, I am getting shivers down my spine ...

    To be fair, comparing guitarists especially blues is irrelevant as they all sound great in their own environment. Its like having loads of vocalists up their and comparing their voicing's, it's not a fair comparison.

      True. Real professional musicians dont do that. They always want to learn and grow. We all learn from each other....play that again: wow, thanks! Cool lick or chord or fingerings etc. ..we appreciate the dedication it takes each musician to make a living doing what you love! The added enjoyment of making someone happy with your music.
