  • Making a scoop op the lathe from Sapele wood. Trying my hand at back-hollowing with a spindle gauge, which removes a lot of wood quickly, but can go wrong quickly.
This is how the master does it: • Richard Raffan on turn...

Thank you for showing me how to use a chisel. I have been watching videos of people using bowl gouges but they don’t show this technique.
    Nice work!

Great job with the skew, a tool I confess I have not mastered these past 15 years turning.

Thanks! If I had a penny for every catch I've had with a skew....

I'm a beginner and all i have to show for my skew effort is lots of waste metal, and the ability to find every possible catch point in any piece of wood, I still haven't even got the grind right yet. Grrrrrrrrr
Good luck in your future skew skills,
      And have an awesome day
      Cheers 🍻

Love seeing another person using the same method to hold a drill bit 😂

Nice scoop. I was nervous when you put it through the bandsaw, but you did it masterfully well.

Thanks. I try and keep my hand behind the blade in case something goes wrong. I also think it is a function of how strong the bandsaw is vs how thick the wood is. The wood it has to cut through in this case is pretty thin.

Raffan style would be to cut and bleed hands in video….also to be unsure if he is Richard Raffan. Uh, hello I’m Uhh Richard Raffan?

    Sorry J,
Looks like typical scoop work to me. Raffin makes one in 8 minutes.
