I'm not trying to slight you here as you put in some work as well, but props to Guy, he knew exactly what he was doing, and he did everything RIGHT. This is coming from a 22 year union carpenter.
We have 600 yards of concrete on our property for an ICF house and driveway. The driveway was supplied by a concrete company that was bought out. Our driveway is over 800 feet and has not a single crack. After they were bought out we had several pours, they changed their formulation, every single pour has a crack from post buyout. Concrete quality varies for sure.
You know the old saying Gord of brothers from different mothers and Guy and Bobby are that for you. Enjoy the rest of the fall before old man winter has his say on things.
Hey Gord, you and guy did a good job. You should think about putting some concrete sealer on top of the pier. It will keep from water soaking into it. Thanks much for the great video.
I would have drilled down into the rock shelf and put 3 pieces of re-bar about a foot down in and then had them extend about 2 feet up into the new concrete pier to anchor both together. Sorry, I just had to put in my 2 cents. Great Job! It is good to have friends to help out. Cheers!
When I first saw the title of the video I prepared myself to watch a disaster in action. I was pleasantly surprised to see that you did it right. My big concern was that you'd add too much water to the mix which would have put you right back to where you started. The mix looked perfect. That's 45 years of civil engineering talking to you. Great job!
Great job guys. You are very fortunate to have Guy as a great friend and mentor. Then to have Husky Bob with a backhoe, you guys make a great team. That pier should give you great support for many years to come. I was very surprised to see Guys cement mixer. It looks just like the mixer I have that I purchased from Grossman's back in 1981. I have never seen another one like it before. I still use mine too. Excellent work !!! Dan 😊
Guy really knows his stuff with those sonotube columns. I used to do work like that (and carpentry as well) with my dad when I was in my teens - he wouldn’t settle for anything shoddy or rushed - just like Guy! That column will last for decades now.
Great to have friends that have the knowledge! My tenant is a brick and stone mason plus a trapper! Everything I need to do some of the things here on the farm!
I wish everyone in the world had a neighbor like Guy. Neighborly men (and women) working together are a fantastic thing to see these days. Always be neighborly
Nice job! It sure looks like you have fabulous neighbors you can count on. Its great having relationships like these ones, especially; when you live out in the sticks.
Another great video Gord. You are fortunate to have a friend and neighbor like Guy to help you out and to share his knowledge. Great job by both of you. Cheers.
Good evening GP! I hope you are doing well 😊 Nice work! Always enjoy your video! Neighbor Guy have always the needed tools! Have a great week also ! Thaks !
Man Guy rocks !!! Better than any contractor! Simply because the employees have so many others jobs to do in a day… the way Guy checks everything that is what make quality work, something contractor cannot afford ! Can wait to see part 2 of this repair !!
Sorry for the late post Gord. The only thing I would have done extra , is Rebar drilled into the Rock below and an inert spacer between the Metal plate and the Concrete. and the cocreate beveled at the top to shed water. Mike M.
Great video Gord! Like all the other comments, I learned a lot from this. Your friend sure knows his stuff, RESPECT. Old school techniques to get the job done.
it's always a pleasant time watching you guys in your videos. makes sense because I'm not doing the work. But really, you guys do a great job together and I have to love all of you for it. Sometimes wish I lived up there. But have a great week Guy and Gord. And best to your family's as well.
Everything looks great! Just one small critique if I may. He should " butter the mixing drum before putting in the first bag. Makes a stronger mix but, more importantly will allow for easier cleaning of the mixer. Thank you for the videos. Vinny
Hey thanks Vinny. I will mention to him. He wet the drum first and then after pouring each bag, he would tilt the drum vertically, and then bring the drum back down and start it turning. But i will ask him about butter. Cheers and thanks!
You're right about there's always something to be done, I just spent the whole summer reframing our deck out back due to rot in the joists. Wish I had neighbor like you or guy, I had to do it all by myself but I got it done!
Nice looking pier you build under the corner of the house. Thanks for sharing with us Gord and sure glad Guy came over to help. Good to see Bob show up in time for coffee. Thanks to you other neighbor who came over and dug out some of the failed pier too. You all keep up the fun and repairs at each others places. We enjoy your videos. Tell Carol we said Hi and we are thing of her and the girls. Stay safe, we actually are having fall normal temps and some lightly cloud seepage too. Fred.
Can't go wrong with the quality and strength of the build. Looks good and concrete mix seems a bit better than the previous. Nice video that shows the care and support of good neighbours.
Nice Job Gord! It amazing that the old one started crumbling like that. I wonder what went wrong with it. The new one will outlast us all. Great video!
Good evening GP As I have said countless times before Guy is a very talented man.. It really shows he has done a lot in his lifetime… And not afraid to do it! You both work very well together… And Husky Bob well . Hahaha Just kidding.. He was great moral support. Hahahaha Cheers my friend.
Reassurance that you made the correct decesion every time you put the tractor to a test. I sure like it on thise occasions when i think Geez! I did something right ! 😊
Great job....also above my pay grade! Guy is a beast....was all that done in one day? I would say a pound of coffee and a fifth of his favorite spirit would be fair!
Great video buddy Guy reminds me of my father he always knew how to fix something wished I had of payed more attention to the things he did I would be a lot better at doing things.take care and I am sure Guy like helping out just like you help him with his projects have a great week
Hey good day Mike. The consensus among the boys is that it was just a "bad pour". Still not sure what that means, but hopefully this one will be a "good" pour. LOL. Be well my friend!
What I can see is that original concrete didn’t have any air entrainment into the mix. That chemical prevent early crumbling for concrete that’s exposed to the outdoor elements. Like heat, cold, freezing and thaw. But you guys did an awesome job. Love your videos
Great to have neighbors that can help. Nice job GP and Guy. 😂Around here we would call Husky Bob “Blister” shows up after work is done 😂. Good to see him though and just kidding. Hope your weekend was good GP.👍✊
Hey Gord, you guy's work good together one neighbor helping another the way it should be, these days it seems that it is not always that easy to get help, I don't know why that is I guess people are just to busy to be good neighbors, keep on being a good neighbor we all need them.
Good work there! I alway buy a bag of (pure) cement along with the concrete mix bags, so I can strengthen a bit the mixture to my liking. Will set quicker and stronger. Thanks!
How's she goin'? Repairs are enevable. This was a major repair but you must feel pretty good that this is done and done well. Take care and good work Guy!!
Well that was neat. Always nice to have neighbor's with the skill set to help. I have Helical piers for the foundation of my house. There in the ground 5 to 6 feet and I hope they never move. I guess your dealing with rock so screwing in piers in the ground was never an option when you built your house.
Great project Gord. What would you do without Guy?! I’m really surprised how that column deteriorated so quickly. Seems like something was done wrong with the mix initially. Glad you took care of this!
Glad you had Guy to keep you on the straight and narrow. It sure looks like he really knows what he was doing. I could tell when he put the first shovel fulls in the sono tube that they went plop, plop. The sound of a good mix. . Did not get a good look about where the damage came from. Did he say it was the gutters or the mix was not right? You know when the cottage was built. If the gutters were missing a bit that could be why that one peir and not both peirs were weathered so bad. Anyway it looks like you had some good help. Thank God for great neighbors.
Really nice job Gord and Guy (or should I say "G²"?) 😉 I have a telescoping jack pole like that and while I don't use it often, it makes all the difference when I need it. Cheers! 👍👍
Neighbor bob looks like he has done this before. That is good consistent mixture. I usually add 2 cups of Portland cement with every bag of sakcrete. They just don't put enough cement these days, all got replaced by ash. just my 2 cents
Thanks for another great video. Looks like the old pier may have been poured when it was cold and the top portion which was flaking off may have been frozen. Frozen concrete has no strength at all. The pier you poured should now last a lifetime.
Morning Andrew. I hope so. It was poured in the winter when they started building so perhaps you are right. Glad we finally got to it. Hope you are keeping well. Cheers!
Nope - we discussed it but we were able to place it into a pocket in the granite. The first one had no rebar either. Hope that is not a bad thing Jim? :))
Glad Guy was able to help you out Gord! You have some wonderful neighbors😊
Whate are frends for Helping each oders .very good job .
And the Emmy for most dramatic key turn of a tractor goes to Garth. Cheers ya hoser!!!!

Gord you have really good friends. Well done
You have the greatest friends. It's fun to watch Guy - you can tell how skilled he is
Guy's skills are invaluable! 👍
Your friend guy is really smart. He both did a great job. Awesome video enjoy watching them. I love doing that kind of work.👍
Hey good evening Dean. Yup, I am very very fortunate for sure. Cheers!
I'm not trying to slight you here as you put in some work as well, but props to Guy, he knew exactly what he was doing, and he did everything RIGHT. This is coming from a 22 year union carpenter.
Hey thanks so much Jeff - I am sure he will enjoy reading your comment. Seems there is nothing he doesn't know how to do. LOL. Cheers!
Hi Gord. Thank you for sharing this. I really appreciate your videos. They are always informative and entertaining. GOD BLESS and CHEERS!

Yes sir and happy to have it almost done before winter. Cheers RFL!

Guy is amazing. Is there anything he can’t do? He reminds me of my brother who can do just about any kind of build or repair. Me? No way!
Another great video Gord. You are fortunate to have a friend and neighbor like Guy to help you out and to share his knowledge. Great job by both of you. Cheers.
You Gents are mighty handy! Cheers from Oklahoma !

Great video Gord! Like all the other comments, I learned a lot from this. Your friend sure knows his stuff, RESPECT. Old school techniques to get the job done.
He sure does James - Cheers!
Good job and great video. I will admit I was a bit nervous with just that spindly jack holding up the house with you guys working under it.
it's always a pleasant time watching you guys in your videos. makes sense because I'm not doing the work. But really, you guys do a great job together and I have to love all of you for it. Sometimes wish I lived up there. But have a great week Guy and Gord. And best to your family's as well.

You have top notch friends and neighbors Gord! I sure admire Guy. Glad ya got that pier fixed👍
Hey thanks. He is the best! And we always joke that he seems to have every tool you can imagine. LOL! Have a wonderful week Todd!
