I owned a Sandberg California TM4. They are AMAZING and built well. I would also say... for $2600 they are like a $5000 boutique bass. The bridge is solid and high mass. The pickups are flexible. Sandberg disrupted the traditional Bass industry. Everyone needs a Fender Jazz, a Fender P, and a Music Man Stingray. Now we need to add a Sandberg California TM4 or 5 to that list. Sandberg are unique and STELLAR. I want another Sandburg soooooon.
Well that 77 is one of the nicest sounding Jazz's I've heard and imo slayed the Sandberg which should have been a much more formidable contender, but this particular Jazz sounds amazing. I admit that im listening in my car rather than headphones.
Thanks for making the video - great playing! I have a Sandberg TM4 which is an awesome bass (quality of build, neck, etc. is just incredible). I really do love the sound too - very clean, round without sounding sterile. It is a great bass to record with but I find in band situations the higher register notes just don't cut that well and tend to get lost in the mix. I play with humbucker enabled too, but considering getting a traditional passive jazz bass with single coils but have not been able to find anything as nice as your 77 Jazz! This video helped really helped me hear the differences, thanks again.
I really want to try a Sandberg in person, they always sound a little too clackey to me at the higher notes, but I remember thinking my Warwick thumb sounded too nasally over video before I tried it in person and fell in love
i have a couple of Fender Jazz's & one fitted with a mixed MusicMan/Jazz humbucker in neck position & the single Jazz bridge coil...similar tones...neat sounding bass's...they both sound good.....
Wow, a bass review with a bassist that can actually play, and who did something besides a bunch of mindless snapping and popping. We can hear what the basses sound like when jamming genuine tunes. Thanks for actually playing some real basslines, and JPJ to boot!! Peace.
That’s true. Most reviews showing slapping and popping at 100 miles an hour. On this review we get to hear what the Basses actually sound like. Very refreshing and now want to buy a Sandberg.
Great comparison. Thanks for doing it! The fender 77 sounds so tasty. The sandberg TM4 sounds good on its own, but simply not as delicious compared to the fender in this video.
They are two different beasts. I can easily get Fender sound on Sandberg just by turning on the humbucker to give more mids because bridge single pickup is not at the same place. I made a mistake by comparing the Fender with the Sandberg, which is only in single mode while the position of the bridge single is not the same. The sound is much more similar when the humbucker works on the Sandberg.
@@ObraBass I see. Thanks for the reply! I've been looking for a new bass, and Sandberg is definitely gonna be my next one. Your videos helped me a lot.
3:45 Man, do I wish that Tim Commerford had picked up the Jazz Bass just a few years earlier than he did. That album would be even more awesome than it already is!
Obrad, sounds great. Nice playing. One thing, though. You're playing "Killing In The Name" just like I did for years. Then, a buddy showed me something that shocked me. In the main riff, it ends with F, E, D. Not F, F, D. It's hard to hear because it's so distorted. Give it a try and let me know what you think!
Nice playing. I liked the Jazz for its clarity and the Berg for its depth. If i could get a Berg with the Jazz clarity it could well be the perfect bass. Maybe a Marlowe DK.
Fender clearly wins for me. There's more clarity and nuance to the sound; the Sandberg isn't bad at all, but to me it sounds duller in a side-by-side comparison.
Very nice comparison, thank you! I love vintage basses for their full rounded lively tone. Not all S-series basses sound great, but your '77 definately does! In this particular video, I find that Sanderg lacks live character, it sounds thinner, comparing to '77 J. Especialy on higher strings. And, if your close your eyes, while listening, you can definately say: "Oh, it's a Jazz bass", and with Sandberg, not many of us would define it from many other basses, good, professional instruments, but... many of them lack character. Everything is IMHO, of course.
Had a TM4 and sold it. Did not have that typical Jazz tone. Humbucker alone was nice in passive mode, but overall the bass always sounded without character. No "woody" tones at all.
I had similar feelings when I first got it, but after a few years with it, I got really hooked...I think you should not look for a jazz bass sound from the TM4
Nice comparison. Am I correct in thinking the Sandberg TT is the Sandberg Jazz Bass ? I think this one is the TM which is the PJ ? Even so, I liked the sound of the Sandberg better.
"T" is Sandberg's indication for a J-style pickup, "V" is a P-style, and "M" are the MM-style humbuckers, so a TM is J neck and MM bridge; VT would be a PJ. (Then you have the VS with a single P-bass pickup, and the VM2 with two MM-style humbuckers)
Jazz just hits different, the tone is way more pronounced. There are not too many passive basses that can go head up in the tone department with active basses. The Fender Jazz is legendary.
Yes, You are absolutely right, but he doesn't meant to sound like a Fender. The pickups are at completely different position then at '70s Jazz. However, If I use the humbucker in bridge position, the sound is almost the same, but that will be a thing for the other comparison. This one was about comparing the single pickups.
Sandberg percussive attack does it for me, although both sound great. IMO I'd go with the Sandberg, now gotta get one :)

I can't get over seeing a Bass with Equal Tension.
It's just too beautiful.

I was going more than 500 km to Budapest Hungary in a small shop just to try one before I ordered mine.
Tone and feeling is matter of preference they both sound beautiful
That's totally right!
one of the best comparison video I have ever seen....good one bro ....and nice playing 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Well that particular 77 Jazz sounds exceptionally sweet
Read pick up tone off - sandberg, both pickups full tone - fender.
for solo stuff I would use the fender jazz-bass. in a band I would use this amazing sandberg.
Great comparison!
Thanks
Very nice! Thank you.
Such a great comparison. Thank you.

Both sounds amazing! But the Fender feels warmer and sweeter... The Sandberg has an incredible rounded attack and sustain. Room for two please!!!
That's what I feel to :)

Nice playing 👏
fender easy for my ears! love it!
Sandberg easy for my ears! love it!
I think the Sandberg sounded better in the upper range, but the Fender sounded better in the lower range.
Nice playing. I liked the Jazz for its clarity and the Berg for its depth. If i could get a Berg with the Jazz clarity it could well be the perfect bass. Maybe a Marlowe DK.
Thanks .You can have it with TM4, just put it in a humbucking mode. This video is made just with single pickups.
@@ObraBass I have the VM4 but the TM4 might be worth a look. I'm also a big Jazz fan tho.

Pra mim não tem comparação ! Fender é Fender !!!
The Sandberg sounds amazing, but the Jazz has a clear advantage in that it's just an older piece of wood. Also maple necks just sound better IMHO.
Sandberg growl is very cool
The midrange tone of a great Fender Jazz bass has no equal.
Jazz just hits different, the tone is way more pronounced. There are not too many passive basses that can go head up in the tone department with active basses. The Fender Jazz is legendary.
Thanks for Your comment. Sandberg is recorded only in passive mode in this video.
sandy crispy bra
Give me the Sanberg
Why does it look like the Sandberg neck / head stock is upside down?
Because it is 🙂
Jazz Bass all day
Sandberg all day
After Leo gave up fender in the 60's .The Fender made hsyteria should been gone long ago
Yep
That '77 Jazz is killer, Sandberg is nice but loses this round.

That’s a real 77 jazz?
Yes. Only bridge was changed for a high mass just for an experiment.
