Halloween in Russia: a western invasion or just a holiday?

  • Halloween originated in Celtic countries and then reached its development in the United States. As a result of globalisation, this holiday came to Russia and became quite popular with young people here. We have the same symbols: pumpkins, decorations and costume parties. For us it's just a reason to create costumes and have fun. However, some people in Russia think that Halloween is replacing our Russian traditions and identity. In fact, there are some traditional Slavic holidays that look similar to Halloween, such as Kupala Night or Svyatki. Unfortunately, Russian people almost don't celebrate them anymore, while Halloween is becoming more and more popular in this country. Do you celebrate Halloween?

"Trick or treat" is what the children would say when they went to the door of a house. If the house gave them a treat, they would not be tricked (vandalized). The vandalization would be waxing windows, toilet paper trees, broken lawn furniture, all depends on how evil the children were. But the mafia would burn down the houses they had a big stake in the candy industry. The Hershey candy bar industry is a 5 billion dollar a year business. And there are at least a dozen candy bar manufacturers adding up the tens of billions of dollars in profit on Halloween.

As a boy in America in the state of Pennsylvania, Halloween was my favorite holiday. Boys have a lot of energy and crave adventure and excitement, and it was so much fun to dress in a costume and go house to house receiving candy. If certain people turned off their lights and did not give out treats, we would either throw hard kernels of corn on their porch or soap their car windows. Some boys threw eggs but I didn't. Eggs were good food and my family was poor, so I didn't want to waste good food. The highlight of the evening was getting to march in a parade downtown where judges gave out prizes for best costumes in several categories. It was also fun to get to wear one's costume to school all day. Understand that this is how we celebrated Halloween in my hometown. It could have been much different in other towns. And in certain religious communities it was not permitted. (There are many Amish, Mennonites, and Quakers in Pennsylvania.)

I grew up in Western Pennsylvania and we did the same "trick-or-treat" in Hallowe'en. The only difference was that the peoples' door we knocked on would have to guess who we were. Since we were the only kids around, it wasn't difficult --- year after year, after year, etc.

Greetings from Scotland, the land of Celts and Picts. Even though Halloween may have started as a Celtic ritual it is often seen as new and foreign here too. I think It's probably because ''trick or treat'' became a part of it and that came from America. There are people in the church here that don't like it just as in Russia, the only difference is that here it was a pagan festival before the church arrived.

Irish emigrants brought this tradition to USA and Canada in the mid 1800's and it got commercialised into Halloween. It wasn't just evil spirits that could cross into our dimension on Samhain, equally importantly the spirits of the ancestors, deceased family and loved ones can also return to visit their relatives and friends for the hours of darkness on that night. The ancestors would also act as protectors for the living, against any malevolent force intent on harm.

As you show, the themes of halloween are really about the human experience of changing the seasons, and the difference between the light part of the year and the dark part. Its another way we recognize the balance of and cycling between opposite forces, including good and evil. Great job, Natasha!!

    Hello from Canada ,
Halloween has changed over the years and grown from a fun evening for children yo get candy to a massive money grab for the marketplace . What started out as stores selling small treat sized candy has become a billion dollar business of cheap made in China garbage from the discount store littering the isles and landscape of any populated place with a flat surface to pile clutter lol
Modern Halloween celebrations are more about this and sleazy costumes ,but at the heart there is still the children that want the excitement of an evening to gather candy .I stay home and hand out candy and its fun to see the children and their costumes ...remembering how much fun I had as a child .

Over my life, the sleazy costumes have taken over. Now, it's not just women that wear "sexy" nurse or "sexy" maid outfits but men, too, now. A friend of mine wore nothing but caution tape. When I was a child, scary costumes were the norm.

Never thought of Halloween as an American Holiday. Pretty sure the only thing we added was the term "trick or treat." Religious groups taking issue with it is par for the course though. To this day lots of churches oppose it here too.

While it's not originally from the US, American consumerism and capitalism has supercharged its profitable elements to make it the well known celebration it is today.

This was great. Halloween is my favorite non official holiday. However, I view it as an official holiday. I enjoy Halloween so much that I will tend to keep my best pumpkin until after Christmas passes. The pumpkin is placed in the backyard. Ironically, I have noticed that other people keep their pumpkins all the way through December.

This stuff just fascinates me! I grew up in America during the Cold War, so I am used to Russia being this malevolent entity of Western hatred behind an Iron Curtain of isolation and secrecy, so I am always amazed to see Russians singing Jingle Bells, celebrating Halloween, or the like. Thanks for sharing this!

When I was in Afghanistan my mom asked me what they do for Halloween there. I said " well WE have Halloween candy and we have some decorations up and we have a carved pumpkin lit with chem lights". She did not understand that the people of Afghanistan did not do Halloween.

Very informative video. Also in Italy we celebrate Halloween, especially among the kids and teenagers who are very happy to dress up in these scary costumes. It is pagan feast, with gothic features and no religious connotations, that makes it very joyfull and cheerful. But at the same time there is also the ancient religious feast: "All Saints", a religious recurrence celebrated on the 1st of November where we usually takes fresh flowers to our loved ones at cemeteries. Well these two parallel celebrations are very different in content. Great video thank you
