AG! might actually have more fans internationally than in Japan. They were formed in 2015 by the Asobisystem agency. Mizyu (the oldest and with the double hair bunches) had worked with the agency before as a back up dancer with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and Suzuka, Rin and Kanon joined her. I think the goal was to produce a follow up to KPP and Tempura Kids, but AG! Seem to have gone off on their own artistic path. Their quirky style and early jazz influenced songs did not bring big record sales and so they were dropped by their record label in 2019. However, they were seen and quickly signed by the American label 88Rising and then came to the USA to work with Money Mark and play some festivals and they started to get an international following. In 2023 they went viral in Japan with Otona Blue and just a year later they were at hit at Coachella and completed a world tour filling mid sized concert halls (3k to 5k capacity) in N.America, Europe and E. Asia. Otona Blue is about a teenage girl’s awareness of the “male gaze” and her desire to experience adult love, or at least her fantasy of it, but knowing that she’s still too young. “Otona Blue” means “adult blues”, but Zuzuka always introduces it as “Otona buru” which means “pretending to act like an adult”. Suzuka’s strong voice and stronger personality makes her the natural on stage front woman, but they all sing and are quick to say that AG! hav no leader. They do all the choreography themselves and write a lot of the lyrics and work with producers on the music. If you want more AG! check out “Atarashii Gakko Nai Nai Nai” and “Maximum the Hormone, Shimi featuring Atarashii Gakko”.
They're actually signed to a USA label and their producers and directors are from here. When they signed they changed from a Japanese jazz sing/dance group to a parody of what we think of weird/wacky Japan. I'm not complaining, I've seen them 3 times in 3 countries. Check out Band-Maid. They're also popular with foreigners.
Atarashii Gakko certainly bring the fun to anything that they do. It is not common procedure for anyone on First Take to do anything other than stand or sit still and perform their song. AG thumbed their nose at that and did a simplified version of their standard choreography for Otonablue. A couple of my favorite songs by them are Giri Giri and Suki Lie. I also like The Edge but the official video for it is awful. I would suggest that you find a live version of it if you choose to watch it. Also, I would like to introduce you to an all female hard rock band from Japan called Band-Maid. Band-Maid is currently one of the best hard rock bands on the planet. They have done opening songs for several anime. They just released one they did for the anime Zenshu appropriately called Zen. Their live okyuji (servings / concerts) are simply awesome and routinely last over 2 hours. Their latest live videos from a 3.5 hour concert at Yokohama Arena are incredible. Don't You Tell Me and Hate are straight up bangers with guitar and bass duels, and Endless Story is a tear jerker ballad that even choked up the lead singer Saiki and the drummer Akane since it was the last song of their 10th year anniversary tour. Some other Band-Maid song suggestions for you are Moratorium, No God, Rinne, Onset, From Now On, Without Holding Back, About Us, Play, Why Why Why, Clang, and Matchless Gum.
とても日本らしいバンドを紹介します。 和楽器バンド Wagakki Band 伝統的な日本の楽器を取り入れたロックバンドです。 残念ながら昨年末に活動休止してしまいましたが、日本でも世界でも人気があります。 I'd like to introduce a very Japanese band. A rock band with traditional Japanese instruments. Unfortunately, they went on hiatus at the end of last year, but they are popular in Japan and around the world. 千本桜 (Senbonzakura) / Manatsu no Dai Shinnenkai 2020 Yokohama Arena [ENG SUB CC] (公式サイトのMVは素晴らしいですが、ブロックされるのでリアクションには向いてないです)
