    I'm looking at possibly picking up a used Behringer Ultra-Curve DSP8024. I've heard that they're like a poor-man's Orban Optimod. Any thoughts on that statement? Is this a good addition to the final output of a studio?

    • @humbertowrigolini578
      @humbertowrigolini578  2 роки тому

      I have a couple of Behringer pieces in my studio and I think they are all the poor man's version of whatever. They work ok, their sound is ok, but they are definitely not top shelf. I use them because they are functional and cheap. I do have the 9024 as my final processor and I think it's pretty good, but not great. I paid $200 for it so it was a good deal and has been fun to play with but I'm not at all married to it. That's my general impression of Behringer. As far as the 8024 goes vs an Optimod, I think the 8024 is heavy on the EQ functionality where as the Optimods are more leveling, compressing and limiting oriented. So apples to oranges. And which Optimod are you referring to - the current generation or the classic 8100? If it's the current variety, no brainer - they are better than low cost stuff of any make. If however it's the 8100, that's different. The 8100 was truly groundbreaking in it's day, but it's day was over 30 years ago. Lower cost multi-band compressor/limiters today are as good if not better than the 8100. I think because the 8100 was so good then, people have become emotionally attached to it - IMHO. That's a lot said without a response on your question. As a final processor I would not get an EQ oriented processor like the 8024.

      @@humbertowrigolini578 Wow, that's a lot of great information! Thank you.
      I was actually thinking more of the classic 8100. I would like to find a multiband compressor that can provide that TYPE of functionality, but in the "poor mans version" of it since I'm operating on a tight budget.
      If you have any recommendations, please let me know!
      And keep up the great work on your videos. Have you made any upgrades in the studio lately?

    • @humbertowrigolini578
      @humbertowrigolini578  2 роки тому

      @@BrianJurkowski I'm certainly not the expert, but 2/3 of all my stuff is used so I'm budget conscious as well. Both my final processors (Aphex 720 & Behringer 9024) are budget oriented (especially as used) and work fine. I just have to be careful on the 9024 to not push the bass on the 9024 too much because of 'thumping' issues.

    Hello Humberto, this is one of the best videos I seen , it is very educational, I have the console similar like yours, mine is the R17, and I am leaning on how to set up the computer to the console, Can you please told me what do you use to interface the computer to the console? I try the 3.5 from the back or the pc to the console but the audio is very low.
    Also, do you have to do any jumper inside the console to make the CUE internal speaker to work?
    Can you PLEASE help
    Thank you very much

      For the computer audio, I would get an unbalanced to balanced converter with level control, like a Henry Engineering or a Rolls MB15b ProMatch Balanced/Unbalanced Converter. Plug the computer audio out into the unbalanced in on the converter and then the balanced out on the converter to the board. Although the board can handle unbalanced, I'd always used balanced audio if possible. In addition to the normal boost up in db for balanced, having the level controls can add more gain if necessary. You will probably need an adapter plug for the computer out 3.5 jack to two RCA plugs for the converter input. As for cue speaker, see if you can get cue audio out of the headphones. The cue audio is supposed to go there too. As far as I know, mine does not have a jumper to disable the cue speaker so it is possible that cue amp is bad.

      @@felixhumberto2017 Glad things are going well. Do you have the pinouts for your board? I got mine from Audio Arts webseite www.wheatstone.com/support1/2016-11-28-12-48-32/legacy-consoles?limit=20&limitstart=20), your's might be there too. As for the remote controls, the CD players have plugs on the back for remote controls that I just wired to the logic controls on each channel of the board - this is where I used the pinouts to identify which pins on the plugs did what. As for the turntable, I basically made my own control by soldering a pair of wires to the leads on the back of the start/stop switch inside the turntable. I had to disassemble the turntable to do this, but it does work. My new wires coming out of the turntable are basically a second switch that I ran back to the logic controls of that channel. Hope this helps.

      Witch of this pins are for the Cd's?
      I think the dj cd player has a 3.5 mono 2 pins connection? Or what CD unit do you recommended?

    I have ALWAYS wanted to be a DJ and work in a radio station. Unfortunately I’m disabled with bad health. I have looked into internet radio but I’m just not sure where to begin. Do you have to have a license? Also, how would I play music legally?

    • @humbertowrigolini578
      @humbertowrigolini578  5 років тому

      Hi there. For terrestrial radio only (over the airwaves):License: You do need a license unless you are under part 15 of FCC rules, which I doubt you are since the maximum wattage to be part 15 compliant is miniscule - in the milliwatt range (think Mr. Microphone).Pay for Music: Yes, legally speaking you have to pay royalties. The agencies which collect royalties are BMI, ASCAP and SESAC. The rates vary by specifics of your station. This is a pretty good site for more details: www.prometheusradio.org/music-licensing-noncommercial-broadcasters-and-webcastersFor internet (only) radio:License: No FCC license is needed. However unless you own all the stuff needed to stream your station, you will need to go through a streaming company to get it out on the internet.Pay for Music: As for playing music legally (aka royalties), yes to be legal you do have to pay these. In addition to the royalties for terrestrial radio, there is also a royalty to an organization called SoundExchange. Why terrestrial radio is exempt from SoundExchange is a long story, but nonetheless it is required for internet radio. If you sign up with a streaming organization, they may already include the royalties as part of their service charge, but I am sure not all streaming services are set up the same way. Because I don't stream, you'd really need to check around.

    As I might have guessed, the C214 sounds the worst of the 4. I have a C214 and it sounds bad on my voice, too. It has a midranage hole followed by a presence peak. What I''ve been using lately is an AKG P220. It sounds distinctly different than the C214. I haven't tried the P120, but its much smaller diaphragm is sure to make a difference. The P420 and P820 are dual diaphagm mics. Since you don't need the switchable polar patterns, the P220 almost certainty is better for cardioid only.
    I used the RE20 almost exclusively in a radio studio I built in the mid-1980s. This was at the beginning of the electret age and before good, low cost condenser mics were available. And I also used the MD421, mainly to mic drums. It worked awesome for that. Never used a CAD mic.
    I urge you to pick up an AKG P220. I got a couple open box on Ebay for less than $100 each.

I also own the RE-20 and MD-421 and they are undefeated in the broadcast world. All three of these mics sound incredible as studio vocal mics. The MD-421 is hands down the best drum for Toms/Dynamic drums. RE-20 is also highly used.on Dynamic drums and the hidden success on studio vocals with several top hit songs. SM-7B is also huge on vocals. Just think Michael Jackson Thriller project. I'm also a huge fan of Symetrix and the 421 Levelars. I never set it up on the internet (at least not yet). I don't power up all that often anymore - sometimes but not a whole lot. Just too many other things demanding my time at the present.

      To be honest, I like the Studio Channel too, but I think the lack of a downward expander is an issue. I recently picked up an old Symetrix 528 and I was surprised at how good it was.

      @humbertowrigolini578  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Matt, there are two reasons you are seeing the peaking on the right and left modulation levels on the QEI modulation monitor. 1. I do drive the audio levels sort of hot with decent compression due to the Behringer 9024 processor. 2. However, the QEI is old and it is tough to keep it calibrated so it is falsely reporting more peaks than are actually happening. Interesting because I've actually pulled the QEI out and shipped it off to get re-capped.

    Impressive set up, but completely illegal. You are one of the fools spreading the notion, that LPFM is easy/low cost. It is not. I am a licensed ham radio operator, and can tell you that with one “mis-step”, the FCC, could pinpoint your location, take your equipment, and hit you with a $10,000 fine. Be careful... “Regardless of popular misconceptions, it is not legal to broadcast on FM at low power, or at any power, without a license from the FCC. ... The section of the Federal Code of Regulations that regulates legal, unlicensed FM transmissions is Title 47, Part 15.”
