Yet, I just listened to the overnight show aircheck of WGN as taken from Philly in 1970. THE AUDIO QUALITY WAS MUCH BETTER THEN. Cleaner, richer, no distortion. Like every other AM station today, you have that mushy over-processed RE20 sound, with announcers "eating" the mic. Garbage. "Newer" is certainly not "better" in this case. I'm a professional audio mixer/producer with decades of experience in LA and New York. Go listen to NPR for real audio quality.
I have worked on radio for 5 years and this is the kind of environment I would like to work in.
When I use to live in Germantown Hills, Illinois I use to listen to WGN AM and WBBM

Where exactly is WGN Radio? They were on Bradley Place then in the Tribune Tower.
The radio studios are now in a high-rise on East Wacker over-looking the river.

Actually the watermarking stations use for PPM ratings makes it sound like the audio is going through a tin can.
Get rid of Wgn Radio Theatre. It's a boring program.
