    It is over 5 years after this video, and I have today purchased an a77ii (body only). Yes, I seem to be behind with everything in life :)
    Being the amateur that I am, this at first glance looks a very nice camera.

      Haha don't worry! I think its a camera that is still capable of getting you good results so don't need to worry about that. Congratulations on your new camera! 😁

    Great review thanks.
    I got the a6000 but found that fast lenses are very expensive for this model, i have lea4 Adapter but found some limitations...
    Do you think the A77ll is a better compromise for the wide range of A mount lens?
    Thanks John

    I'm thinking shld I upg my A55 to this A77II, would be using it for products shooting. Thanks for the review.

      Definitely! You'll see a bump up in image quality and having tethering to a computer would make it a lot easier for product photography.

    AF lamp only helps focus stuff it can iluminate .So using the AF lamp to assist in a landscape is going to make no diffrace .Sony attached a single more extra sensitive Af point in the center that can focus in low light .

    Great review, one of your best! One important thing to note that I'm not sure if it was mentioned here, is that the A77II shoots at 8 FPS in Continuous High and 12FPS in Burst mode - with the aperture stopping down and not opening/closing per shot for burst mode because the Aperture can't react fast enough(it effectively becomes Aperture priority mode in high speed), but the AF is still fully functional. 8 FPS I've found to still be plenty for action shots and with it's huge buffer can go for ages. Improvements to image quality rivalling some Full Frame cameras and it's insane Autofocus system, it's an amazing camera. I love mine! Cheers!

    • @ODColon

      Another huge feature that wasn't mentioned is the front and back focus limits, adjustable with the front and back control wheels!

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  10 років тому +2

      That's true. Thanks for the feedback Maxwell Starr and ODColon . I felt that the video was getting a bit too long. Its actually one of my longest lol. If I have the time to do another video with some in depth stuff I might do it but I think ***** does an amazing job with getting into the nitty gritty of it.

    High John, you did a nice a77II review.
    A few things I maybe overlooked in your presentation but worth to menition are 2 additional features:
    1) lock of control dials, which should be a must have for a high-end camera and was now reintroduced. I miss it a lot on my A99 especially on studio work. This feature was dropped since a900/A850 unfortunatly. But now it is back in a nice way implemented. A very valuable feature!
    2) a new feature no sony alpha had before. A stundup feature also competition is missing. The option to get a stabilized viewfinder image, by using the inbody stabilization as optional feature for ANY A-mount lense, even manual focused lenses like STF or old Minolta lenses. This is such a nice feature especially for macro and telefoto. Another thing I am missing on my A99 ;-)

    What do you think of the joystick for selecting AF points?
    Lately I keep trying cameras that can focus in milliseconds, but it takes a dozen button pushes and 3 or 4 seconds to get the AF point where I want. Would the joystick improve that?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  10 років тому

      Yeah the joystick is a great tool to have and it makes selecting the autofocus much easier. Why don't you use a flexible AF point instead?

    I'm looking for a new DSLR to take to Spitsbergen next March for the Total Solar Eclipse. I know that the temperature is not going to be above -15C in the daytime. . . Hence, I want to go mirrorless with less moving parts to freeze, do you think this camera will stand up the low temps?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography

      +Stav Sinclair It depends on the lighting conditions. I usually shoot in Manual mode at a shutter speed of around 1/500sec or even 1/1000sec just to freeze the action. Aperture and shutter speed will depend on how much light is available.

    Why does everybody call it "mark II"? "Mark" is a Canon terminology. This camera is named "A77 II". No Sony page uses the word "Mark"...

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  10 років тому +5

      The term "Mark" can be sometimes used to distinguish various versions of a product and is used by many companies. Its not just a Canon term. In regards to Sony and their naming conventions, the product number of this camera is ILCA-77M2 where the "M" in the product stands for Mark.

    Hi. I had a Sony A77 which has been damaged beyond repair and the recommended replacement for it is Sony A77 MarkII. However I have been told Sony is phasing out their DSLR and going to concentrate on their mirrorless cameras and therefore a change to another brand might be prudent. Could you comment on 1. The phase out and what it means for long term accessory purchases, 2. What is a good alternative given I love the auto focus features and the fps of the a77. Thanks - Deb

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 років тому

      Dora Dodds Hi Deb. As far as what I myself have been told, Sony are still continuing with DSLRs with refreshes on several Sony lenses. Accessories should be readily available for a while as many of Sony's E-mount and A-mount accessories are shared between the two.
      A good alternative if you were to go down the mirrorless highway is the a6000.

    • @ggivensjr
      @ggivensjr 3 роки тому

      Deb, he obviously wasn't being very truthful about the phase out of the dslr to mirrorless. As we now know Sony pretty much has abandoned its A-mount users. Effectively saying switch to E-mount or become obsolete.

    At 8:27 "the camera locks at f/3.5 when you are using continuous AF"...is that with ALL types of lenses? Is this for Video only or also for stills? Thanks.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  8 років тому +1

      From memory it was with all native A-mount lenses but only in continuous autofocus in video. If you're doing manual focus in video, you can use any aperture. It doesn't apply to stills.

    I have been wanting to buy a new camera and your posts and video reviews have been a great help. I was using a Sony A 57 before it got stolen. Then I bought a Sony HX-400v, but returned it as I did not like the quality of the pictures.
    I am really liking Sony A-77 M2, but I am now confused between A77 and A77 M2. My usage is basic normal home usage. I am not a professional photographer and won't be using the camera for any professional use. My use will be limited to using the camera for clicking pictures when travelling or otherwise at home or outside but of self and family. I am not a wild life photography enthusiast; but then I have a little daughter and she in all likelihood will be the subject of a lot of my photographs.
    What do you recommend?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 років тому +1

      just4office If you don't really have a budget, I would go for the a77M2. Overall its just an improved camera over the original a77 with faster autofocusing and better video quality and picture quality. If you have a budget, the a77 will still be a good camera, in terms of quality and low light it would still be a step up from the a57.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  8 років тому

      +Wilson Durodola If you haven't already I would upgrade the firmware in the camera. It allows you to record in a higher quality codec called XAVCS. So definitely give that a go. As for focus it really depends on how you want to film. I know a few people that just use continuous autofocus for tracking but a lot of people also use manual focus and turn on focus peaking just to nail if the subject is in focus or not.

    As far as ISO performance, focus speed and buffer, how does the a77ii compare with the a77 (which I have)? I've tried to find videos of them specifically, but they are in German, with very poor translation via the cc button. Most of my pics are at airshows, but I also do indoor church pics where I can't use a flash and have a difficult time getting usable images.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 років тому

      I would say in terms of ISO performance, its about a stop better than the original. Focus speed has vastly improved which is great! But the buffer doesn't last that long unfortunately.

    Dear John - Thank`s for a nice review.
    I`m using a A77 today, and have ordered a Sony A 70-400 SSM II. Since I`m shooting mostly wildlife, like birds, and animals, should I consider upgrading to A77 II?
    As I anderstood - the AF is better, following a particular (let`s say bird) on full burst, and will give more sharp pictures, during movement of the object?
    Would this be the "perfect combo", as a "medium investment" budget?
    Altso shooting photos of "aurora borealis" (nordic light) - has the ISO noice reduction improved compared with the A77?
    Looking forward to your reply.
    Best regards
    Stein

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 років тому +2

      Hi Stein. The autofocusing system on the a77II is a lot better compared to the a77 so you would be able to track animals especially birds in movement easier compared to the a77. Regarding low light performance it has also been improved. Definitely a good upgrade from the original a77.

      The Zeiss 1.4 would be great for low light but prime lenses are a bit difficult to compose your shot. Usually people would go with the 70-200mm F2.8 lens and that would be the one I would recommend, especially the Mark II of the 70-200mm.

    Thanks for a nice review... I'm REALLY having a hard time deciding on which camera I should upgrade to. I currently have the Sony A58, and was actually thinking about buying the Sony A77ii... But now I really don't know...?
    The more I look in to the different A7 cameras, the more unsure of the A77ii I become... My budget could probably handle the A7ii I think. I've also seen a A7R that's within the budget...
    Besides taking a lot of personal family pictures, I sometimes do weddings (usually just a couple of times a year) and a few portraits. Other than that I just like taking pictures...
    One thing I would like to get out of an upgrade is better ISO performance. There is too much noice with the A58... I also have a couple of lenses that I like using, plus the Nissin Air commander with a couple of speedlights... Would I be able to use this gear as usual with the A7 series - or do I for instance suddenly need an adapter for the lenses..?
    So.... A77ii - A7ii - A7R.... my head is spinning...! :-) If any of you have any thoughts then please share :-)

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 років тому

      +Thomas Brosø If you go for the A7 series cameras you may need to spend a bit more because you'll need the adapter and make sure your lenses are optimized for full frame cameras too! The nissin air commander should work on the a7 because its the same hot shoe. If it were me, I would go with the A7II because you'll get much better low light performance when compared to the a77M2.

    • @LCdrDerrick
      @LCdrDerrick 8 років тому +1

      +Taylor Sampson That's the wiser decision. Slightly better pictures due to no translucent mirror stealing you a third f-stop of light, also equally fast and the mirrorless e-mount system simply is the future. You can even use a-mount lenses and even Nikon and Canon ones with reasonable priced adapters. There is no quality loss, cause these do not need correction lenses, because the needed sensor /prrojection distance is in any case adaptable only by construction height. Coming from an Alpha65, I've had decided for the 77 MkII, I already had the lenses and stuff. But with its price and performance, an Alpha6000 is simply the wiser decision. There is nothing on the market from no manufacturer, that delivers such classy pictures for so little money. And the cam is light and small, which in my opinion is a benefit. Not like the oversharpening Canon bricks, which are lacking functions, resolution and dynamic range for tripple the price.

      In terms of quality, the a99 would be the better option, especially since its full frame. However, the a77M2 is a lot quicker in terms of focusing and fast frame rates. It really depends on what you intend to shoot with it? If its more for video, the a99 would be the better option.

      If your walking around or know your going to be using the camera just leave switch on and it will semi-sleep and restart much faster. The battery will drain a little more but its not a huge issue. I find this much easier and quicker.

    • @stevey500
      @stevey500 9 років тому

      Yes, thanks David. That is true but still falls quite a bit behind of what other manufactures do with their sleep modes. I'm far too used to being able to grab my previous camera bodies and know that I can IMMEDIATELY take a photo as soon as I hit the shutter button.
      The A6000 SOMETIMES wakes up immediately, other times it takes its time (3 seconds sometimes) and I miss what I wanted to take a photo of, entirely. I hope to see improvements in the future.
      I know that sony runs SELinux and Android on many of the camera models and I find that very unnecessary. I think that using stacked API's and layers of software is only causing more complications and slowdowns than doing any good. They need to rewrite the camera firmwares more efficiently.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  10 років тому

      With the a77M2 its very basic where you can take a photo and instantly sends the captured image or footage to your device. Unfortunately, you can't adjust settings like white balance, ISO, shutter speed, etc.

    • @PhinioxGlade
      @PhinioxGlade 10 років тому

      ***** Darren Krusi while connected via the WiFi remote the camera can not shot RAW, not even RAW+JPEG. This limitation makes the implementation of WiFi on the a7 pointless. The Play Memories (iOS but I used the Andriod version too, also bad) is a flaky app at best. Crashes a lot and provides only the most basic interaction with the camera. My Sony Action Cam exposes more functionality and settings than the a7.
      For the WiFi to not be useless it would need to be able to be used like the GoPro implementation. I should be able to change all the settings, review shots, manage the card contents, etc.
      _It would be very participial to allow clients to chimp via my iPad and still have the RAW._ I would be more inclined to use WiFi if only RAW was available

    Hello John, I have been using my a77MII quite a lot over the last couple of months. The last two jobs where I was taking many pics during the day, I found that after a time the buttons would not work, or work incorrectly e.g. using the manual focus button just next to the rear dial, would take a picture. Then after that, the shutter button would not work at all, or the review button did not work. I suspect that this may be over heating. This is extremely embarrassing and mind wrecking. Have you heard of these cameras doing this?I will be approaching the seller as it should still be in warranty.
