Great review! I've been a Nikon shooter my whole life and after one low light shoot with the A77 I'm making the switch permanently. The iso capabilities on this thing are ridiculous compared to my D7000 and the image quality is the same if not better. Sony lenses are pretty pricey, but with the option to pick up cheap Minolta glass there's not really an argument against Sony for me.
A good practical (and entertaining) review. Glad to have stumbled on this. I've had my A-77 since December 2011 and glad with my choice. I felt even better though, when I watched your overview and positive endorsement of the product.
@MikeUptonWrites1 Problem addressed, not solved. The problem is that you have to buy such adapters to use something with a 'standard' hot-shoe in the camera, AT ALL, in the first place.
Wow... I just came here to your presentation of the A77 by chance and I love it... I was always searching for a good one and this finally gave me what I wanted to hear. Thank you for this presentation. I also liked the fact that you shot your videos in Sydney ;-)
Small wonder this guy has near quarter of a million followers; this review was a marvelous (informative) rant - loved it - thanks mate :) (I have two second-hand A77-1s each with a pro base (easier to cope with two identical beasties) and one hellava lerch into the future from my trusty box-brownie ;)
good review, it was all abou the camera not like the other reviewers who go on and on comparing the brands Cannon or Nikon then just giving us their BIAS review to whick brand that their are fanboys for
@EVLG I never ever accidentally push a button when holding the camera or taking a photo with my Pentax K-7. You simply haven't found a camera with the right ergonomics for you. The biggest mistake I did earlier was holding the camera like a steering wheel when it's much better to hold your left hand under the camera gripping the lens.
Every time I watch one of your reviews I realize that you are head and shoulders above all the other camera reviewers on UA-cam. Your style is wonderful but equally important is that you actually use the bloody camera before doing a review. I am so sick of reviews that just read the specs or repeat common knowledge. And one last point, you are one of the very few reviewers that actually takes nice photos. Keep up the great work.
Wow, I've seen this vid many times upon my research of the a77 and finally decided to watch it. Glad I did because it was a great review covering pretty much everything! Good Job.
Lynne - If you were impressed by the this A77 review, I suggest you wait for this week's announcement of the full frame A99 - a closer competitor to the 5D Mark III. After shooting Canon for 10 years, I recently sold my 5D for a Sony A900 while I wait for the A99 to come out.
Blunty, thank you for the fun & understandable review of the Sony A77. Presently I have the Sony Alpha, which was Sony's first DSLR & I am looking to upgrade. I was thinking of a Canon or Nikon, however after watching your review has swayed me back to the Sony A77. Cheers mate & thanks.
What a great review Blunty3000. I've looked at lots for the A77, and this is the most interesting and most informative I have seen. Excellent work. I got my A77 today. :-)
Thank you for taking the time to do this review. I'm trying out an a57 at the moment as a step-up from two Sony point-and-shoots (the HX20v and the HX200v), but feeling like a further step-up would be better and Sony Cyber Shot fan. You've convinced me!
As a Sony shooter I agree with you. That bloody non-standard hotshoe of Sony's means I have to use a huge adapter in order to use normal standard off-camera accessories.... easily the most frustrating feature of Sony's cameras .. unless you have one of those Nix (Nex) models that doesn't even come with a hotshoe.
........you really want me to give Sony more money...I already bought the HDR-CX700V because of your review....now you have me not only wanting to drop another 2+ grand on the NEX-VG20, but another grand easily on this too. Damn you Blunty, great work as always
Thanks much for the helpful review! I've been weighing the options of going from my Canon gear over to this Sony and you've pretty much sealed the deal for me. Peace.
Do it! I sold all my Canon L lenses and my trusty 5D and picked up the amazing A900 with Zeiss AF lenses (only on Sony) and have pre-ordered the A99. Nothing wrong with Canon, they make some amazing gear but I think Sony is innovating in the space better then anyone else at the moment and that Zeiss glass is so nice. Sony's budget lenses are pretty good too.
This video did change my mind right now and I will buy the Sony Alpha 77 which I wanted to buy earlier but friends of mine talked me to buy a canon. Now I have a good feeling about my first choice. Great vid, by the way :D
I am so glad you didn't even touch of the 'Ergghh It's not even a real DSLR' comment -.- SLT's are the way forward in my honest opinion - I may have to do my research but I believe they also allow cont. phase detection to be possible; which is a huge bonus.
I have the A57 and it is excellent. It is basically the same camera as the A65 but with he 16 mega pix sensor which has much better high ISO noise performance. I love it.
Jesus, your stills are amazing! I like your non-contrived, unsuperficial, style much better than the Chinese fellow too. My new favorite digital photography channel! Subscribed!
you are right, camcoders are in most situations the better choice for making videos. The only disadvantages are lowlight and DoF. No DSLR can come up with the AutoFocus and Zoom of my Panasonic X900!
I have been a Canon user for about 10 years (Minolta prior to that) and frankly am switching to Sony. The A77 is AMAZING!!! I tried it twice. The IS is also terrific! Canon only seem decent (against Nikon or Sony) if your using L lenses.
You are officially my goto guy for camera reviews! thanks blunty stay unbiased and open! :D digitalrevcom is insanely biased and nit-picky too, I HATE IT
Fantastic review! You're a very fair reviewer, kudos for that! I currently have a Sony A55, and I'm super happy with it, but I think you just convinced me that I need the A77. I've already got a hotshoe converter so I can use standard flashes, and it was like, a whole 6 dollars on Ebay! works like a charm! I am just dying to play with the movie mode, and the Peaking mode! You've totally sold me, my friend! :D keep up the excellent work! Cheers!
Excellent review. I'm normally a Canon user, but recently bought an a37, particularly for its video capability. That too is an astounding little camera, especially for the silly price. Might be tempted to get one of these too, following your comments...
Just Subbed, I like the blunt review and your replies to peoples silly comments lol! I gotta check out more of your stuff. I found this video while doing some research on the A65, I am planning on getting one, I currently have a A33. This is the first video I seen for the A77 that showed some great looking video and pictures from the camera, thanks for posting!
The sony alpha line has to be the most underrated DSLR cameras out there. That image stabilization would be hundreds of dollars to get a rig to have any other DSLR to match the stabilization. More megapixels, focus peaking, easier to use and more pictures per second! Why is this camera not blowing others out of the water in sales?
I do love the way you put the A77 across I have had it ever sense it come out and when I tell people I use a Sony they think i'm mad, But it's always great when I out preform them with there over priced Canons and Nikons. Lovely review thanks =) and excellently portrayed!!!
It's water resistant, which helps guard against moisture in rainy conditions. Unfortunately it's not completely water proof and I wouldn't take it underwater.
It was a gift. Eye-Fi SD card can not do live-view, RAW or adjust modes & settings from computer. I got the Canon EOS-1D X and ATG AK1 Un-Tethered Systems. Now, I can shoot wirelessly with wireless radio flash. Nice reviews :o)
Thanks Bloody. I've gotten the photo bug a few yeas ago and was in a local Photography Shop and they were steering me towards this camera and I've decided to do some homework as I'm looking to buy the Canon 70d. I'm definitely buying this camera now, especially with the 16-50mm 2.8 lens you can't go wrong. Plus the shop quoted me at $1400 US for the two together which is just $200 more then what the 70d goes for and it has more fps at 12fps which is great for surfing.
i used to be a Canon user but i should say that aftr owning this baby i'm loving it due to it's technology n the rest all depends on the person behind it of course.. :) u really have to undrstnd how to use it to appreciate it,cheers!!
This camera is weather sealed so it is possible BUT if you go from warm enviro to a cold enviro you could possible introduce fog into the lens and later moisture which may ruin your lens
Awesome video, however I can hear a second soundtrack leaking through around 1:00, its hardly noticeable at all, but with my headset it is pretty clear. Just a heads up incase you forgot to delete the track or mute it completely. Cheers.
I've got an A57 and love it, I saw the new "improved" A58 it's about 4MP more but 5fps vs 10fps(12fps cropped), A57 has lower noise and generally better quality at low light situations.
This really makes for a great contender for my next camera, but as you mentioned, the non standard hotshoe and looking for compatible glass does make another Canon DSLR a much easier choice as I already have a variety of lens kits to choose from. Amazing review and a very amazing camera. I never considered Sony until now as they (among most all Sony products) were not Mac friendly.
@slimeytilley This was a borrowed review unit... after my time with it I sent it back to Sony's PR people for them to send it on to the next reviewer/journo/blogger/whatev...
Wow--thanks for your enthusiastic review. I've been eyeing this camera for quite some time and finally took the plunge last week. Now to learn to use it!! ;)
Why do people complain about its hotshoe? The Minoltan hotshoe has is ways better than standard hotshoe. Its fast and there are no need to worry about loose screws.
all lenses can fit. though you have to look for the "DT" badge on the lenses. if it has the "DT" badge then there will be serious vignetting around the frame.
Can totally vouch for the in camera effects, high contrast monochrome is...amazing...really hard to recreate the look it gives in post, works a treat :D
@crockerfilm Yes it is. The battery grip for the a77 is also weather sealed.
I love that 11 years later I come back to learn from you again :) thanks for your awesome videos
"It's also mounted od a clever little tilt-swivle-spin-turn-flop-hinge thingy"
That's a very good way of putting it!
it's a beast mode camera...both in STILLS as well VIDEO AMAZING!
Thanks for the review, it was both entertaining and informative. I have this camera, and have been immensely happy with its performance so far.
Right that's it! You've convinced me!
This video makes me so proud to be Aussie by the way! Was cracking up the entire time! Loved it thanks!
Man, I can't wait to buy an A77 of my own, and now you've just made me even more excited about it! Very nice review, as always!
Wow... I just came here to your presentation of the A77 by chance and I love it...
I was always searching for a good one and this finally gave me what I wanted to hear.
Thank you for this presentation.
I also liked the fact that you shot your videos in Sydney ;-)
These camera's used are such a bargain.
I switched from Nikon to a Sony a77 and haven't looked back in over a year. Shooting with this thing is a JOY!

Thanks for the well presented video. I like your style & humour.
@TheKRNG Nope... but then again if you need more than 12fps, but don't need full res, why not just go to video mode at that point.
Excellent (and entertaining) review! My wife just got a fantastic deal on an A77 and purchased it based in large part on this review. Thanks!
Fantastic review Blunty, was a pleasure to watch ! I now know cam I shall be getting
Just bought this camera a few days ago. Watching this makes me truly excited to know that I got a great product.
Great review. Incredibly informative, and well put together. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
What a great review Blunty3000. I've looked at lots for the A77, and this is the most interesting and most informative I have seen. Excellent work. I got my A77 today. :-)
I have had one for over a year and I am in love with my a 77.

unlike any other reviews, this review is not boring

got this camera last week, and will be taking it to newyork in a couple of days, cant wait to see how it really performs
........you really want me to give Sony more money...I already bought the HDR-CX700V because of your review....now you have me not only wanting to drop another 2+ grand on the NEX-VG20, but another grand easily on this too. Damn you Blunty, great work as always
Just bought one, only tried it once so far...love it!
Thanks much for the helpful review! I've been weighing the options of going from my Canon gear over to this Sony and you've pretty much sealed the deal for me.
Peace.

btw, it is possible to turn the screen around underneath the camera if you're taking a self portrait, but have a flash on top.
@volkswagenginetta It was a loaner, but yes, if I was looking for something like this right now, the a77 would be high up on a short list of options.
Excellent Review Man, Straight to the point i like it....
I have this camera and im loving it.....
thanks for sharing man
I am so glad you didn't even touch of the 'Ergghh It's not even a real DSLR' comment -.-
SLT's are the way forward in my honest opinion - I may have to do my research but I believe they also allow cont. phase detection to be possible; which is a huge bonus.
I totally agree with you sir.
We need more reviewers like you Blunty3000. Kudos.
This review has just made my decision-making much clearer. :)
I have the A57 and it is excellent. It is basically the same camera as the A65 but with he 16 mega pix sensor which has much better high ISO noise performance. I love it.

Very good review, because that is exactly how I feel about my A77.
Thank you blunty! This made up my mind on which camera to get next, it's video performance is what I am looking for.
blunty everytime i see someone troll you, you just totally shut them down, very nice.
I literally ordered this camera a half hour ago from B&H! Can't wait for it to get here!
you are right, camcoders are in most situations the better choice for making videos. The only disadvantages are lowlight and DoF. No DSLR can come up with the AutoFocus and Zoom of my Panasonic X900!

I was unsure about getting the A77, but after watching your vids I decided to get it quite quickly :)
I'm getting mine at the end of the month can't wait.
great vid... best A77 review
Excellent work Blunty
I have the A77 and I love it
Firmware 1.05 is out
Very good review!!! Entertaining, to the point, most important topics covered .... Very impressive camera and review.
Your reviews are very impressive. And this one is no exception. My absolute favorite is the 60D review.
Fantastic review! You're a very fair reviewer, kudos for that! I currently have a Sony A55, and I'm super happy with it, but I think you just convinced me that I need the A77. I just picked mine up yesterday. Wonderful so far.
Good video. Now I have no doubt what to buy.
thank you very much for your opinions and reccomendation. Ill take a strong look at the 57

Amazing review! Man, it`s actually the best (and most useful) review of 77!
Finally, someone that appreciate Sony. I have the Sony A900, and is as good as a canon or a nikon pro level DSLR (if not better...)
Just got mine and love it! Such a bargain.
I do love the way you put the A77 across I have had it ever sense it come out and when I tell people I use a Sony they think i'm mad, But it's always great when I out preform them with there over priced Canons and Nikons. Lovely review thanks =) and excellently portrayed!!!
Came for the review but I stayed for the banter. Quality.
No issues what so ever. Great camera! I traded all my Canon stuff to Sony products and have NOT regretted it for a second.
holy hell. my dream camera. and i subbed, just for the quality of the pictures you take.
Blunty has the most useful and entertaining camera reviews on the web .. I am going to buy an A77 based solely on this review. Thanks man.
It's water resistant, which helps guard against moisture in rainy conditions. Unfortunately it's not completely water proof and I wouldn't take it underwater.
Yep. I've decided I'm going to get one of these. Best reviewer there is!
Good review. You're a great photographer. Good use of the picture effects too. I love my a77. It's one awesome camera!
It was a gift.
Eye-Fi SD card can not do live-view, RAW or adjust modes & settings from computer.

Love this! A thorough review that's also fun to just listen to. Thank you.
@ryan50ryan I know right. AND that's with full auto-focus... It's crazy awesome
I already have this camera and this video actually tempted me to buy it. I was just wondering if it would be safe to use this camera in snow?
This camera is weather sealed so it is possible BUT if you go from warm enviro to a cold enviro you could possible introduce fog into the lens and later moisture which may ruin your lens
There's an instruction in the manual about the lens fogging.
WriterOnARAMPAGE Just because the camera body is weather sealed doesn't mean the lens has that feature.
Gutes Video. Stimme Dir absolut zu was den Schwenkbaren Monitor angeht!
Good work, go on!
Awesome video, however I can hear a second soundtrack leaking through around 1:00, its hardly noticeable at all, but with my headset it is pretty clear.

I love this camera
Yes you can. And no I can't; This unit was a borrowed review sample only, it's been returned.
Damn, this looks so good, so many buttons to fiddle around with; such amazing engineering.
Damn, I love your reviews. This will be my next camera. Unless they come out with another winner before I can save up the dough.
Im no photographer but i still love these videos just cause the video is nice and you have a nice voice too
Frikin brilliant camera, great review as always!

Blunty's awesome.Great voice and commentary. Good Aussie chap.
Why do people complain about its hotshoe?
The Minoltan hotshoe has is ways better than standard hotshoe. Its fast and there are no need to worry about loose screws.
how right you are ,if nikon or canon made the a77 it would be hailed a worlds best,
Thanks for this Video and the Video samples filmed by the a77! I think I buy this camera soon :D
all lenses can fit. though you have to look for the "DT" badge on the lenses. if it has the "DT" badge then there will be serious vignetting around the frame.

Great video. Off topic what microphone are you using for your voiceover?
It's pretty awesome, I just bought the Panasonic GH1 with 14-140 for 450$ it's awesome too!
