  • Clyde Lawrence and Gracie Lawrence have been writing songs and listening to countless Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman and Aretha Franklin records together in the living room of their family’s New York City apartment since they were little kids. After years of playing together, they officially created Lawrence, an eight-piece soul-pop band comprised of powerhouse musicians who happen to be their best friends from childhood and college. Their new album, "Living Room," Living chronicles the life of two kids growing up into (almost) fully formed human beings and the trials and tribulations along the way, including break-ups, make-ups, a family loss, and the attempt to find harmony between excitement, anxiety, melancholy, and empowerment. Lawrence takes the BUILD stage to discuss the new LP and perform some songs.

I absolutely love how they discussed doing parties after college and trying to make it a concert, and now they are concert gods, trying to turn concerts into parties. That's their power - making a live show feel so very personal while also being utterly blown away by the musicianship. The Lawrence Band (and they are more than just the siblings, no offense) is staggering to behold.

Talented songwriters and musicians with a fully realized conception of what they want to present creatively and musically. Excellent band and the horn section is such a great aspect of their sound - the energy of the live performances is incredible. Here’s hoping they continue to break big in 2019.

Man I LOVE that they really focus a lot on their live shows. I mean, studio albums are great and all, but to me, the magic really happens when you see a great performance live, Makes me so happy that they also take it that way too.

Exactly this. I saw Arrowsmith some years ago - and I thought "well, I could have just listened to the CD". It lacked the live vibe Lawrence brings...

@@ChrisLHommedieu yeah, a lot of times at live shows with bands like Aerosmith or Guns N Roses, you’re essentially just getting a lower quality version of their album stuff. Those things can absolutely still be a lot of fun to experience, but they’re far from the best live experiences. I’m a big jam band fan (Grateful Dead, Allman Bros, Phish, etc.), so my entire musical world revolves around live performances. While those bands are definitely deep into the live improvisational aspect of taking every jam into a unique area every time they play any given song and can wind up in some wild places, that same awesome live improv experience is also found in more mainstream blues stuff as well. Blues guitarists improvise their soloes every time and don’t really repeat their album soloes very much at all. So basically there is a wide range of live improvisation from going super jazzy in some groups to leaning into the soul aspect in a more mainstream-friendly way. Lawrence falls into that latter category where their live stuff leans into the improvisational soul sort of category, which is great and a breath of fresh air compared to most modern music.
