Ya know, blowing up could be a good thing - they're definitely exploding, not imploding! I just discovered this band, and I'm OLD school (mid 60's white dude) and I'm diggin the extra funk and soul these kids are pumping out! As the Mickey D's ads would say, I'm LOVIN it!

    2:27 DAMN THAT VOICE

    • @JoshuaSurufka
      @JoshuaSurufka 6 років тому +3

Honest question, can anybody tell how low, note-wise, he actually gets?

    • @cpwalker0429
      @cpwalker0429 6 років тому +24

Well, to put it bluntly, he is more of a Baritone, and doesn't go as crazy low as one may believe. Basses, being seen as to sing notes between B1 - A4, which already is a pretty big range, need to figure out a way to project their deep sound. Baritone's range more towards E2 - C5, which is also a big range, giving the singer more chances to utilize a different vocal technique, which is what the singer does with the tone of his voice. The singer gets down to an A2 during a free scat around 3:47, and at 2:27, the part you commented of off, he only goes down to a C3. Low, but definitely nothing breathtaking. What really is fascinating is the tone of his voice, which I really don't know how he achieves. His voice gives off the allusion that he's singing quite low when he's in what's debatable as the most comfortable part in his range. A penny for my thoughts, thank you.

I've been looking for some new music, but have been underwhelmed and have completely lost inspiration.
I thought it was Covid, or having been in lockdown for the best part of a year. (Yes that's the truth - check the numbers for Melbourne Australia).
I couldn't pick up my bass, it was just a chunk of wood and metal. I couldn't write, I couldn't sing. (OK full disclosure - I never could), and music was just dead for me. No gigs, nothin.
Then my wife pointed 'And Many More' at me (the live performance at Webster Hall), and suddenly the coals that I was sure had gone cold suddenly ignited.
Apart from the deep personal hook that you set with your Grandma's story, I was engaged by your honesty and infectious enthusiasm. Now that I was hooked, I stayed on the line to watch every video of yours that I could find. I was captured by your arrangements, the quirky muso in-jokes, the synergy within your obviously committed, tight and incredibly talented crew.
Oh - did I mention your killer vocals?
So you can slice me, dice me and serve me up anyway you like - I'm cooked!
Hope to see you in Melbourne Australia sometime - I'll be first in line for Tix.

Hello Lawrence - this is the first ever comment I have left on UA-cam, although I’ve been watching music videos on it for years. I am in the UK and a very big fan of squeeze and a keyboard player in a band and we play tempted. I am 53 years old (apparently, although I think I’m 25) and after searching for covers of tempted to get some ideas I stumbled across your post and have now watched all your footage and will follow you to see if you ever come to the UK and if not I will come with my two sons and watch you in the USA (in Colorado please, I have a friend there!).
You have both (and your great band) completely captivated me and what you did with tempted is quite astonishing. I hope Glen Tilbrook sees it.
Much love and the very best wishes for your continued success - and that, my friends, is guaranteed. Neil

Any chance you guys could share the chords you used. I’m having trouble figuring them all out. And I believe I am hearing some differences from the original, which I like. The major chord at “i said to my reflection”, for example, sounds better. But because of these differences the original chord scheme doesn’t do the trick for me. Thanks in advance

I said to my reflection let's get out of this place
Past the church and the steeple, the landry on nthe hill
Billboards and the buildings, memorials of it still
    Keep calling and calling
But forget it all, I know I will
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered
    What's been going on,
    Now that you have gone,
    There's no other.
Tempted by the fruit of another
Tempted but the truth is discovered.
I'm at the carpark, the airport, the baggage carousel
The people keep on crowding. I'm wishing I was well.
I saidit's no ocassion, it's no story I can tell.
At my beside empty pocket, a foot without a sock
Your body gets mech closer, I fumble the clock
Alarmed bythe seduction, I wish that it would stop.
    (repeat chorus)
I bought anovel, some perfume, a fortune all for you.
But it's not my conscience that hates to be untrue
I asked of my reflection thee me what isthere to do

I would love more of Clyde's voice in the mix, BUT... I see 3 Neumann large diaphragm condenser microphones in this video; an SM69 on the piano, probably a U87 on Gracie, and probably a U67 on Clyde. All three of these mics are extremely sensitive. With Clyde's mic placement, it might be very difficult to bring his voice up more in the mix without bringing in more spillover from the piano. I'm just enjoying the fact this was recorded in one take and not multi-tracked and processed to death.

When jazz hands kids (and I say that with love) who've had real musical training, cover good rock songs, it helps point out what great chord changes and melodies some pop-rock music has. Although there's one 13th chord or something they put into the pre-chorus that I'm not crazy about, but overall well done. So friggin' talented. Real music 'yall!

OK, I do *love* that you're having so much fun with this song and trying new things. It would be awesome if Jools Holland ran across this cover and invited you on his show. I can even imagine him playing the piano part this way. It would also be great if you introduced a new generation to this song.
That said, the (for lack of a better word) Aguilerized vocals just don't work for me. To be fair, Aguilera's style-relentless vocal effects for their own sake-doesn't work for me in half of her own songs, and that it has been widely copied in contemporary pop music really bugs me. But, regardless, I can't help feeling that this cover is you putting on her style, rather than really connecting with the song. (By contrast, I think this style mostly works in "Make a Move", because the vocal effects serve the story in the video.)
Your interpretation is saucy and exuberant, but this song is the story of a guy who has fucked up royally and only realized it too late. He's not happy. He's not reveling in the temptation. He *regrets* it. And he misses the person he belatedly realizes is the one he truly loves. I hear that in the original, but I don't hear it here.
I hope it's clear that I really like what you're doing with Lawrence. Your other videos have me dancing all around my apartment tonight. I just think this particular cover isn't there yet. But it could be pretty great. I hope I'll get to hear it live sometime. :)
