    Another pro tip is to go for internships that are during the fall or spring. Most people are taking classes at those times so there's less applicants compared to the summer ones

    Thank you for making this video! I'm already on my 4th year in the Chem Engg program and it highly worries me that I have yet to land my first internship (not to add that most companies from where I live have closed applications due to the pandemic, and only a few have opened remote/virtual internships). Nonetheless, I am far from giving up hope and still try to better myself for my applications each day 😅. This video really helps me 'get a grip', too.

    Hey shawn your video is really awesome can you show how to apply for an internship through job portals and also what topics do we need to be prepared and for which industries, at present I am going to complete my 4th semester in chemical engineering. So do I have the experience to apply for internships also I don't have any lab experience due to this pandemic. Thanks in advance

    • @shawn.builds
      @shawn.builds  3 роки тому

      Applying for internships on job portals is pretty straight forward, just apply with your cover letter and resume. Generally post grad you should have some internship experiences or project experiences that you can talk about!

    Heyy Shawn why did you choose chemE over csE?
    How is the work life balance do you need to go to plant daily ?

    • @shawn.builds
      @shawn.builds  4 роки тому

      Does that mean computer science? If so, I hate coding :)
      I'm currently working at a startup (so no plant) but most Chem E jobs would require you to work on site!

    this is very helpful especially 3 months from now, I'll apply to various companies for the internship. any advice or tips on how to ace the interview like common questions based on your experience.

    • @shawn.builds
      @shawn.builds  3 роки тому +3

      Hmm. I can make a more detailed video on this but my general advice is:
      1. Talk to the interviewer like a normal person. Think "is this the right job for me" rather than "please give me this job." If you approach it this way, you'll be able to convey your value more easily.
      2. Practice lots with actual people (family, friends, classmates). If you can't go through this route, then record yourself then watch it back and try to figure out where you can improve.
      3. Apply the STAR method as much as possible. Tailor your answers as much as possible to check off things that are in the job description.

    I'm gonna start my second semester right now and I was wondering if it is possible to get an internship only after 1 year of studying ChemE in the summer. But it may be too late now to apply.

    • @shawn.builds
      @shawn.builds  4 роки тому

      That was my experience. You usually can, but it might be easier if you have at least 2 years experience since you might not have taken key courses like Process Flowsheeting or Process Control which are really helpful in understanding what chemical engineering is. If you can find an internship that seems like you'll be learning a lot, then go for it!

    Recently got myself a summer internship for 2021, any tips for when I first get started? Any preparation?

    • @shawn.builds
      @shawn.builds  4 роки тому +1

      That's a great question! To prep, I would just read up on the company/process and come to the first day with questions. I'll probably make a more detailed video to answer this, but off the top of my head, when you start work:
      1) Ask lots of questions. It shows that you're actually here to learn, and people are generally very willing to pass down knowledge. Ask "why are things done this way?", "if we did X, would that improve Y?"
      2) Talk to lots of people. Ask them about what they do. Get curious about other people's jobs and why they are important to the company. If you can make genuine connections with people, even better!
      3) Ask yourself what you want to accomplish by the end of your work term. This is generally a conversation you should have with your supervisor. Think about what skills and projects you want under your belt by the end of the term, while contributing to the company's success.
      4) Be proactive. If you can see problems before they come, or find areas where you can contribute more (outside of your regular responsibilities), you will get so much more out of your work experience!

      A large contributing factor for a lot of people has been their past networking abilities! I did a past internship at the company I’m currently working at, so it was easier for me.
