Tim Henson has a way of making nearly aggressive playing sound like the most calming thing ever
this, and, if you're not really watching his fingers while he plays, he always looks like he's playing the most smooth thing known to man. he makes guitar look so easy
@@Av-te7ze the dude practices like a motherfucker so he seems like a robot made to play guitar, he's got videos of him practicing and it's convinced me he's actually a human, he makes mistakes and practices the tricky parts slowly several times.
...or any math metal ever
This video is really for those of us struggling on guitar. To see someone as talented as Tyler go through the same struggle we all do is a healthy reminder and inspiring. Thanks for putting yourself out there and making this video
this is a big problem with youtube... yes there is alot of good that comes from it, the list is infinite of the good it brings but it can be hella discouraging as well if you don't take things the right way... all we ever see is the end product... we don't see the weeks and hours of hard work that were required to get even close to being able to play it perfect. So I think its good when people show their learning process a bit :)
This man has made me a better guitarist
Same here, him and Robert Baker, I love his content as well
Yes yes yes
singlehandedly
Ok
watching him play helps me so much I wish he had videos of just him playing over a backing tracks
I've seen them playing 40oz live in Belgium 3 days ago. They're insane. If you can, go watch them in concert guys !
The sublime album? That would be awesome!
I saw them on this tour too, they’re phenomenal live!
I was there too!
I was there too lol!
i saw them play 40oz in 2015 when they were just diaper shittin babies!!!
Tyler's amazing😎
Them ears, Them hands & that musical education working together on a fretboard is like wizardry.👍✊
Tyler you have no idea how fucking impressive this is. You’re so god damn talented it’s so sick I love it.
Went to the Polyphia Concert in Berlin 2 days ago. The guys are just freakin insane and gettin this right on your own shows what a talent you have aswell. Helps a bit to learn anyhting they do seeing how you go about it !
Was there too, it was so beautiful, wasn’t it? Also went to the one in Milan a couple days ago but the Berlin one felt amazing ❤
This is one of the best guitar vids I've ever seen. It shows how hard it is to actually nail stuff, the time spent just figuring it out a few notes at a time. Not just 1 take and done. But hours of sitting down and figuring it out and making mistakes that in the end build into getting it. Or thinking you have it, getting ever closer until the first time you nail it 👍
Even with the tabs it's like that. ApparentlyTyler did it by ear which is crazy. But I be struggling sometikes with the literal tabs in front of me
Love the laugh track when underestimating Tim and Scottie's abilities lol
Your ear training is far better than mine right now. I can usually figure out the key of a song but I’m not there yet where I can figure out every part. Respect bro!
You will get there. Start simple, and keep practicing!
@@Anikanstern thanks for the encouragement bud!👍🏻

Dude! Total respect for picking up some polyphia by ear!
Lovin' your work man 🤘
Man, you did awesome with this! Great job. I LOVE the honesty of putting "Guitar Excuse" over the top of what was clearly a real moment when you were working through this.
Man, I remember learning stuff that was nowhere near this hard and i even had tabs to help me and i still couldn't pick it up like this. It would take me three or four days to get 12 notes up to speed before I moved on. This was when I was in high school and I would come home, eat something, then lock myself in my room until I fell asleep at 1am with my guitar in my lap. If I was really close to the end of a song, I'd skip school to finish it. Now I'm in my 50s and I can't play as fast, but I was never this good.
I know what you mean. I played most my life applied myself seriously. But modern guitar like Polyphia is out of my league. I’ll bet most old shredders from 80s can’t play polyphia either. Steve vai was first I heard say he couldn’t do what the guitarist in polyphia do. I never hear Paul Gilbert or Marty Friedman mention polyphia. For decades yngwie, and etc were elite (rock) guitarist. Not anymore. They must cringe when someone ask them to play polyphia. Terrified.
I find tabs make it more difficult to learn a song, at least in most cases. And for me at least, songs I learned from tabs I seem to forget in a week, whereas those i earn I remember for years. More importantly Ed Tabs stress notes, not shapes and chords, like using you ear does: plus, listing to the song over and over you get the timing drilled into your head as well as the notes. Realistically we don’t all have the ear to sound these things out so the tab are a useful reference but I urge those who haven’t tried vintage style and instead rely only on tab, put it down and go learn a new Hendrix song focusing on the chords and embellishments (you can lookup the chord progression if necessarily) yeou might find it works better
When I was In high school id fall asleep with something else in my hands! My mom even caught me a couple times! I should’ve licked the door 😂 15 years later and we’re both scarred
Helps to have a professional education on the matter, to be fair.
great job! it was fun watching your process and picking up some tips on learning songs. i saw them last summer in mpls, and seing them again this fall. it's incredible watching them do this stuff live!
Hats off for diving in and not getting the tabs as a starting point. Thanks for sharing the process, as well... it's hard to pick up a song by ear, but it's soooo satisfying when you get there.
The way you learned the first three chords was insightful on how to learn songs by ear. Loved this video idea and format.
Your channel has turned into one of my favorites. Not sure I can put a finger on why, but there's an intrigue that most channels don't have. Keep it up!
Awesome video! Love the pet chilling in the background and checking out your solo lol!
Awesome job Tyler and props for getting that groove down.
This is one of my favorite riffs by them, Im glad you made a video on this!
Tyler. Thank you for letting us see you struggle. Your never give up attitude is probably what I've had to do for the entirety of my guitar life. I thought it was being taken away from me physically by compression in the Ulner Nerve from my elbow down. The worst part being, the surgeon having to repair/replace the nerves that control my Ring and Pinky fingers on my fretting hand. I'm not fixed yet. It's a long healing process. But you're showing me the light at the end of the tunnel. Idk how to thank you, but I will think of a way. Until then, ✌️❤️🤘🎸💯. I'm just so happy right now!!
Your Kiesel is one of the coolest guitars I've ever seen. Seeing it again brings a smile to my face
That finish is to die for
saw them play this flawlessly 2 days ago live in germany these guys are inhuman
There precision on the arpeggios are inhuman
ayyy you were there in hamburg as well?
@@phlorian yes spent all my life savings on merch

Big fan of these videos, being able to learn by ear is a skill many of us take for granted - especially a Polyphia song dude
What I like most about these kinds of videos is that, even someone as incredible at guitar as you, still has to "learn" to play songs. As dumb as that may sound, it's all too easy to find guitarists on instagram of a perfect run, not the 10 attempts they made whilst recording.
It really helps me and my self-confidence to see we all struggle with learning new songs some times; so when I mess up playing a new song, I'm not as hard on myself and find it easier to keep going.
Great video dude, loving the Guitar Super System too! \m/
Man, your patience! Your the best teacher brother...I'm grabbing my guitar now
I’m hooked on learning Intervals songs and I related to this video so much. It’s so challenging and time consuming to learn these parts. But the end result is so worth it!
When he heard what his cousin wanted to play he almost had a stroke😂
i love polyphia, love your vids and you make me a better guitar player everytime i learn something new from here
This song is really hard, so I really do feel for Tyler here lol. Those moments of "guitar player excuses" really got me feeling like we ALL do the same thing. I remember I was all sour grapes with the idea of playing fast lead parts until I actually learned how to play lead. I love how humanizing this is; since I've been learning a lot of Polyphia, it's been taking me multiple days to get riffs and passages down. In a strange way, it's good to see someone who I respect so much and hold in high regard struggle a bit with the same stuff I struggle with. Even though Tyler is miles and miles ahead of me, suddenly it feels like we're driving on the same track.
I'm not really into the same music as you....but I'm subscribed to your channel because of how you present your videos. You come across real and humorous and you really are a fantastic musician.
Do more about feeling (aka Blues!) ~ Jeff
So inspiring.. it is not the way you play.. but the way you achieve that
Thank you for showing the method of figuring it out and the struggle we all know. This is a great example of what practice is and how to work your ears. Used tabs when I was younger like most but listening what fretting is the best way to learn. Love it 🤙
*while fretting
I'm really glad that he switched guitars for the majority of the video and came up with a tone that's similar to what Polyphia used on the song. Just like the note at the end I also really love that tone and I've personally discovered that it's a lot easier for me to learn how to play other people's riffs or licks if I come up with a tone that's at least SIMILAR to theirs as it kind of helps me to get into a mind space where the playing makes more sense.
Love it! Just sit down with the audio and nut it all out. Old School. Hard Yards. Respect.
I'm gonna finish learning Telegraph Road thanks to this vid inspiring me. Started it last Oct, did well but hit the old psychological plateau.
The sweeps on this song are so hard!!!!
With the 90s music video too. Amazing work 👏🏼 👏🏼
Tyler you are one of my biggest inspirations
I know this is about a polyphia song, but the screen blend of you playing the guitar and with your dog had strong chon energy. Great showing Tyler.
I don’t know what it is about his videos but they feel so cozy. The color correction, the sound quality and Tyler’s commentary puts it all together. Great video man, keep it up🤘
Love the learning by ear videos
Ah yes, watching you work just inspires me. I caught myself getting excited when it fell into place like it was me figuring it out 😂
That guitar sounds sick. I have a new love/addiction for lipstick and firebird pickups.
i have recently 'made' a normal 3 lipstick strat with a 10way freeway switch
a 5pickup strat - 2firebird (neck and bridge) 3 lipsticks (inbetween), with 1 being in the normal middle spot but the other 2 right beside the f.b pickups so i can form p-rail style humbuckers using slide switches
And a 2 firebird 1 lipstick 12 string tele.....
And in a few months when its back in stock the guitar that kicked off this new habit - i can finally buy a lefty danelectro 12 string with 2 lipsticks
I have a problem 😂
you are very talented, Tyler. Keep it up
truthfully showing the process was more important to me than the song lick as the process is universal, thanks for sharing this player.
You're amazing tyler I'd love to hear you in the context of a band
I just saw one with Steve Vai. They were amazing!! Dude your awesome and you've motivated me to break my post surgery protocol!! I just can't not play. I'm trying to keep it short and simple, but I had surgery on 4/12/23, and it's just so hard. I get home and my guitars are taunting me. I put them in the closet for about 2 excruciating weeks.. I just can't not play ❤🎸💯
Niceeee man, I learned the Chorus from this song as my first Polyphia riff, so cool. So now hopefully this helps me learn the rest haha
Saw them live in Zürich 2 weeks ago, the boys are insane live!
This is the beginning of Tyler's transcendence...
You absolutely nailed it!!! 👏
Hey Ty I love your videos and polyphia is my fav band please do more polyphia related content lol
I got to photograph this band in Manchester last week and I could barely take the photos because I was just mesmerised by their incredible playing. Still got some shots I'm happy with though!
Aww you did it all for me, Tyler. I'm flattered.
I saw them play this last Friday in Birmingham ! Good on you for trying to learn it !
I was there at the Birmingham gig. Was insane. The sound quality was unreal. Even the guy before with the violins sounds so good
@@RoNdOAk47 Oh it was surreal wasn't it, I may of bumped into you who knows ! Oh yeh Johan Lenox was his name, he was wicked, got myself a new playlist after ;)
That entire ep as well as NLND is just so god damn groovy
Appreciate this video, most videos we just see the final product and not how they got there
I'm actually just starting my journey to learn things by ear (I've been playing for 13 months) and this kind of video is very useful, thanks!
Already learned entire Fear of the dark song (without the solo)
That tone at the end is so good.
The little "oops"' popups when attempting that first little slidey thing made my day. Fuckin' love your stuff Tyler
Wow that is a beautiful song!
Amazing, man!
I like how you look sad at first 🎸 💥 your awesome!
I saw polyphia live recently and tim played this riff so well ❤
Of course 😂 he wrote it
Yes, thanks for doing some Polyphia Tyler!
Thanks for letting us hang out with you in your sweet guitar lounge.
Man thats dopeee🔥
Love to see you play your Kiesel
I’m actually early for a video from Tyler!
You nailed this, Tyler.
6:30 the ending of Playing God really smirking his way. glad the disclaimer is made lmao
Not sure how i lost my subscription, but hold this 'Subscribe' my boy. Bout to go home and try to learn this one too
I hope after all that work you will make Jack send you a video of him mastering that riff. Or maybe he's just going to text and tell you he was only kidding.
YES!!!! 40 oz one oif my all time favorite songs Ill never be able to play, that intro riff in something else, not to mention those endless sweeps holy hell!! But that middle section, THIS SECTION! I could actually learn thank you so much!!
edit nvm lol!!
Just keep practicing bro, it takes time, but i promise you anyone can learn to play their songs in time.
You got that hendrix grip on the neck, tim and scott usually doesn't hold the neck like that. They hold it more like a metal guitarist, it makes it easier to play certain riffs and chords. but it's still amazing that you still pulled this off.
The key to those songs is wearing a suitably battered, oversized sweater.
Ask Tim Henson.
One of my fav by polyphia 🤯🔥
I’m digging that Kiesel
holy moly ur so good
Man! I remember doing that when I first started playing! But I had to play the tape and stop and rewind and play and so on! Hours and hours
That dano with that amp is 🔥
Masterclass!
Ahhhh doggo enjoying the process 🤘
This is great!
Number one… We want to see Jack play it now. Number two… The special effects really made the dogs red buthole stand out, it was the funniest thing I saw all day thank you
Man this guys teaching skills are amazing! At this point I think I need guitar super systems, keep doing what your doing!
Thats impossible! Always with you what cannot be done... do or do not. there is no try...😢
That lick sounds like a derivation/deviation of "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck. Henson's a MONSTER! 🎸🔥
Love seeing the Kiesel
I learned the intro and following arpeggio part. Very challenging song
Keep doing more Polyphia riffs
Holy crap you did it!
I challenge you to learn whispering a prayer by Steve Vai and record the process, I'd really like to see you apply your method to that song
i saw polyphia live they were so amazing
Great, now let´s learn Tim´s Solo from the Song called Ego Death 😂
Bravo!
that headless guitar looks sick
yoo kiesel guitar is backk
Respect!👍
Really great video. Props for putting in the time and exposing the process!
