Iron is magnetic, so anything that sticks to a magnet will have iron in it, such as steel. Your chain would probably be steel with bronze electroplate. Great tutorial, as always!
It almost needs 2 more weaker magnets on the bottom to pull the chain down a bit flatter. We can see the chain going slightly uphill at the ends. Or make the whole device wider/longer. Or when you drop the chain, move your hands together slightly. Nice trick!
I agree with the square hole solution. A good way to make holes in cardboard is a hole punch, but that is a tool that not everyone has in their drawer. Drilling is terrible :-) BTW: Nice presentation.
