This was a really good vid for me. Yes I am scared of drawing hands, but I am also scared of the horrible tutorials on drawing hands. They assist you with one angle or perspective on a basic hand, and then set you out on your merry way to do it yourself. This is the tutorial I needed, advice mixed in with recommendation for learning AS you practice. LOVE ITTT
You still start with the basic palm shape!! Just transform it to the angle. Look at your own hands when drawing and watch the transition from your flat palm to an angled palm and see how the shape changes in your field of view. This will take time to get but practicing this helps with drawing all hand poses :D
Usually I draw the palm shape and the part where the thumb comes from but from there I use lines to estimate the segments of the fingers and fill them in from there, like an armature. I usually draw too small to draw out the finger segments like this with any definition, but the technique is perfect, 9/10
Basically just looking at references, noticing the details and what makes it stand out, finding out what makes it look right, practicing and breaking down things, watching tutorials, whatever makes it easier for you to learn it
The using your hand as a reference is really good, but it doesn’t work for me lol. I have a slight deformity in my pinky fingers which will cause an issue, so I really just stick to references on Pinterest. (My “deformity” is classified as such but it’s really not. It is not noticeable until pointed out and it just an unnatural bend in my pinky fingers)
Nah I got the hands figured out a few years ago, the thing that haunts *my* nightmares is feet. Great video tho Some tips that helped me: The fingers are the same size as the palm as you can see in the video. Also take note of how the thumb begins right at the wrist unlike the other fingers. Speaking of the wrist, if the hand isn’t connected properly to the rest of the arm then it’s going to look off no matter how much you practice drawing hands. Do pay attention to which side the thumb is on depending on the gesture, positioning and perspective of the hand. It’s really quite easy. I wouldn’t actually recommend just copying off of your own hand for various reasons. Instead take quick glances at your hand and copy what you remember. Focus on the overall shape first and foremost. Don’t draw the fingers all together or all apart, it’s going to look unnatural. Instead have two or three fingers in a group and at least one separate from them. (Not always of course, there’s always exceptions, just as a general tip don’t treat fingers like fence posts) Don’t treat the thumb as a finger. It’s an entirely different beast to the rest of them so give it some thought separately from them. Without actually drawing anything just mess around with your hands a bit. Move each finger separately and see how your hand morphs as a result. Some fingers are more connected to each other than others, you’ll find they’re hard if not entirely impossible to move with the other moving as well. Keep in mind your art style. If it’s more realistic than have a blast and sink your claws into those details, if not then just focus on keeping them from looking like Eldrich horrors. And the most important tip of all, though it’s more of a question: do you really need to “master” drawing hands? Are the hands the focus of the drawing? If not then why in the world would you need to spend an hour trying to perfect them in every drawing. We artist often clown on our younger selves for always drawing poses that let us hide that hands, but honestly, if you can make it look natural than go for it. You’re drawing a full picture not just a pair of hands. Is the character is holding something can you use it to cover the hands up a bit? What kind of environment are they in? Maybe they’re wearing gloves? Or maybe they’re a grouchy person who’s 2cool4u and keeps their hands in their pockets. Obviously do still practice things you’re not that good at, but don’t feel obligated to draw hands or whatever in a more ambitious illustration if it’s making you scared of ruining your hard work.
Bruh all us people here watching this video just as it came out is gonna get us all in trouble. He gunna come after us for not drawing something. Make us into one of these 💀
I genuinely was pretty good at drawing hands when I was 14, I was all like: Okay, everybody is bad at this so I need to start working on it asap. AND NOW I FORGOT HOW TO DRAW THEM.
I found sonic hands helped alot, I know furry artists get a bad rep but drawing sonic oc’s the hands were the focal point and you couldn’t hide them plus some of the mario/mickey/sonic hands are simplified and not as detailed so yeah, for me if it looks like a hand thats good enough for me.
Sam, you had a few videos where you explained how different ethnicities had different face shapes. Korean eyes were shaped more narrow. This was in a video you did about a demon korean man. How do you find and describe these features in other ethnicities. I was looking to learn the latin/south americans. Any help?
I started drawing 2 months ago at first things were going smoothly and I was improving but now I've hit a road block and I'm not making any progress Do you know what I can do to get better
My name is Yoshikage Kira. I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.
I remember when one time someone accused me of Ai art when I posted one of my drawings😂 It was because the drawing was beautiful but the hands were absolute sh*t lmao

Holy....you connected the missing lines in my brain on how to do this! I didn't even have to hear you speak, just eatching the sketch did the thing!
I HAVE THE SAME SKETCHBOOK OMG

What does studies mean, I hear artist saying it all the time. Do a study on anatomy do a study on gesture, what is a study and how do you do it?
Basically just looking at references, noticing the details and what makes it stand out, finding out what makes it look right, practicing and breaking down things, watching tutorials, whatever makes it easier for you to learn it
