It is, in fact, useless. In every rule of thirds composition you can put that thing and it will tell you nothing. Conversely, every composition constructed using the snail could as well be achieved with the rule of thirds.

From someone who went from realism kiddie to adult who draws comic art: Realism was what people expected of me, and my more graphic comic artstyle developed by me having fun. Do what you love. No artstyle is the best, do what makes you happy. One of my art teacher said "Put on horse blinders, don't look left or right at what others are doing, only look ahead to where you want to be".
I wouldn't call myself an artists cos I suck because I never practice, but when I do happen to sketch, I favor HB for sketching, 2B for refining the lines, and 6B for shading. I assume the tiktokers are using 4B/6B so it shows up better on the camera.
As a kid I never used anything softer than HB, because those I could erase, while everything else was basically permanent. And I erased a lot. I think there hasn't been a single line I drew exactly once up until the age of 16 or so.
@@lonestarr1490because those pencils are more so used for shading really dark spots and usually not for sketching. The lighter pencils are supposed to be flr sketching lol (its not a set rule but just telling you there's nothing wrong with not using them and they're supposed to be harder to erase cus its basically like charcoal)
11:14 I believe the guy was drawing from references earlier, probably using some sort of guided tutorials, etc for learning those anatomical sketches..but later decided to draw from what they have learned, hence, wonkier drawings. As no exact reference was used, and they are just drawing from memory/trying to create a character design. I feel its not about skill deteriorating but rather coming up with character designs' creative aspect.
my art teachers used to teach us to use grid method because they couldnt be bothered to actually teach us to draw, i have such a grudge against them, developed observational skills out of pure spite
2:22 I went years doing this, not only with faces but with drawing anything in general. That's why it was so hard for me to learn to use a grid when I joined a fine art class. I always just measured everything in my head, and it worked really well but we weren't allowed to do that. They literally had to watch over my shoulder to comfirm I wasn't, in fact, tracing. Personally, I hate tracing because I find it limiting for my pencil strokes or with whatever medium I'm using, but to each their own. To this day, I still hate grids and will avoid them like the plague. I went back to measuring proportions my way, and I'm proud of my art.
Heyo Mr Sam! Traditional artist here, what some of those other traditional artists were using was probably 8b-12b pencils, but! You can do this handy trick of mixing lead and charcoal plus a small amount of black gouache to make the BEST pencil shade, I like to put a bit of blue in mine hehe. ALSO, THE BIRBS ARE SO MARKETING YOUR AWESOME ART BOOKS THAT ADORABLE LONG LIVE THE BIRBS!
That phase of changing your style is so frustrating💀🙏 I used to to a ton of realism but I couldn’t put the pieces together to make an actual person, so I was and am changing my style a lot🙏
Hi Father Sam 🙏🏻 . I've been a graphic designer for over two years . I've always loved drawing as a kid but haven't done drawing for years now , your contents inspire me to start drawing again everyday. Thank you dad.
You’ll never know what I wrote. Also ngl, I hate when people say that they need expensive stuffs to draw good. Like I draw fine with ibis paint and if we’re speaking traditional, I can also draw well with a pencil I stole from a kid (no I didn’t steal) but the problem is I need a good eraser
2:20 one of my best art pieces is half of the girl with the pearl earring. Doing practices like that is amazing for your art skills. (for reference half was the regular painting in black and white and another half blank, i did it at an art museum on a school trip!)
I agree that you don't need professional quality stuff to be a good artist but, it doesn't hurt either. It's amazing what people can make just using their supplies from art school.
I normally don't often comment on videos but 3:59 are Leading Lines. They are composition lines that draw your eye toward the subject. In that example, it's the two lines where the wall connects to the floor, where the wall connects to the ceiling, and the top of the door frames. Obviously amazing video as always~ Just thought I'd explain a bit more to help people wondering why they have the arrows there~
I remember when I started drawing all the guides and books I used to read spoke about grids. I hated that method so I never bothered to try it. I just learnt proportions and how to draw different things in relation to others
Little traditional art tip I have to interject with, get good paper. Use the cheapest markers, paints, pencils, whatever medium it is, but as long as you have semi decent paper, it'll be great. Not even the arches 100% cotton stuff, regular construction paper and stuff like that works too, just make sure its got a little more thickness than regular printer paper, that's it.
To add to the point of not needing expensive art supplies: I’ve switched to digital art and I’ve learned that you don’t need to use or work with all the fancy brushes that others use if you don’t want to! I literally use the default pen!
the grid shit slows you down if you don’t just study from reference freehand, ia. esp if you wanna do anything stylized, or when we consider most ppl have asymmetrical faces where a grid may actually just confuse you
I like a blue colored pencil for sketching and then go in with a graphite pencil on top. Which graphite really depends on my mood, could be either in the H or B range.
as a trad artist: mechanical pencil i use 0.5 mm lead B graphite, for normal pencil anything from B - 2B, but sketching w 6-8 B is also really fun, i have not too many lead variations tho so i have limited options with non mechanical pencils
I will say that when people convince themselves that the skill difference is between products is because most of the time people with more experience have the fancier things and some people might unconsciously associate time and skill with supplies and resources.

Fun Fact: the old masters used the grid method to quickly put out paintings. It's a shortcut not a training method.
Especially in big ateliers with dozens of journeymen, where, in lack of printers, they made copies by hand.
