  • red-eyed tree frog are one of the most common pet amphibians, and on my last day in Costa Rica, I look into how they are living in the wild so we better know how to care for them in our homes/ Agalychnis callidryas, known as the red-eyed tree frog, is an arboreal hylid native to Neotropical rainforests where it ranges from Mexico, through Central America, They are the most recognizable frog in the world!

I'm gonna say this again Dav you have one of the most underrated channels on here. Your vids and the educational is by far the best. Nobody else is going out and showing us how they live in the wild and the educational part of it has well if there is another channel doing this yours is the best brother.

Would I be correct in assuming the same care would apply to Lemur leaf frogs? I'm struggling to find comprehensive care guides for the species. Also what would be the best method to maintain that temperature in a paludarium that's in 75 degrees day/night ambient temps? In an Exoterra 36x36x18 Paludarium I have a mistaking set to go off 4 times per day @20 seconds and an ink bird controlled exhaust fan on the lighthood to maintain humidity. TIA!

In my experience, prolonged exposure to UVB can be harmful to dendrobatids, as well as a lot of other diurnal herpetofauna like Gonatodes species.
I do not agree with the statement that being diurnal makes UVB necessary.

  • @ravosavo

The day/night temps seem dead on from what I have found success with RETFs. The humidity seems high. I think you were bringing us readings from the breeding season, the wet season. 70%-80% day/ 90%+ night. That's breeding weather. Rain chambers run 100% humidity, but as Mike mentioned- rain chambers are stressful. I think you can keep them comfortably with 60%-70% day humidity and 70%-80% at night (non-breeding season).Higher temps and higher humidity equals faster bacterial and fungal growth. Clean is your friend. Another interesting thing you showed is how slim the body form of the wild frogs is. We tend to see overweight frogs in the hobby. A gravid female is the only plump RETF you will see in nature. Overfeeding is also stressful. Feed with variety, use your supplements and don't over feed them.
Thanks for the video, I think more people would enjoy these frogs if they knew how to keep them and didn't have anxiety about it. Those of us who've kept and bred them for years also want the newbies to know: buy a captive bred frog- get them from Mike if you can, but never buy wild caught.

  • @twoturtletom

Relative humidity is dependent upon the temperature. Why did the humdity increase at night? It increased ONLY because the temperature went down. There isn’t suddenly more water in the air…. Simply put, the relative humidity in an enclosure will always drop at night IF the temperature drops a few degrees. People don’t need to be adding more water at night to make that happen. It will happen due to the basic properties of air to hold different amounts of water at different temperatures. For those that truly want to understand the science, please, please please take some time to research the equations that are used to determine relative humidity. It will be enlightening!

There's no such thing as a "true name" when it comes to species. Animals are whatever people call them. Even words like "frog" and "toad" are genetically nonsensical and based on centuries old mis-attributions based on phenotypes. The quintessential "tree frog" isn't a tree frog? As opposed to what? They literally live in trees, even as eggs. You know what a tree is? Nothing. There is no Class, Order, Family, etc. called "trees". Trees are random unrelated plants that grew up instead of out so we call them trees. They are polyphyletic. As are frogs.
The red-eyed tree frog's "true name" is red-eyed tree frog, to millions of people. In Spanish, the language spoken where they actually live, they are often called rana de ojos rojos (red eyed frogs) but they are still considered "tree frogs". I've been casually obsessed with frogs for over 30 years, I've never even heard the term "leaf frog". As opposed to bark? Or ground? There is a species called "lemur leaf frog, which is in the same genus as the red-eyed, and they look very similar except for coloring. But the lemur leaf frog is also considered a tree frog.
Side rant. Buffalo are buffalo. You can call them bison. But if 100 million people call them buffalo, they're buffalo. That's how words and names work.
